@Im4Theone Im4Theone released this 10 Oct 07:52

WinKit 2.1.0

Five new tools, a smarter Dashboard and a smaller download. WinKit is still one WinKit.exe of under 1 MB with nothing else to install. Your settings, themes and history carry over.

New in 2.1.0

  • Disk usage. Pick a drive or your user folder and click through the biggest folders and files to see where your space went. It only reads, it never deletes.
  • Wi-Fi details and a connection test. See signal, channel, speed and security for your Wi-Fi, plus nearby networks. Or run the test: it checks your adapter, router, internet and DNS and tells you where the problem is.
  • Open ports. Every open port and connection with the program that owns it.
  • Health report. Save or copy a plain-text summary of your PC to send to whoever is helping you. Computer name, addresses and Wi-Fi names are left out unless you tick a box.
  • Hardware health. The Dashboard now shows each drive's free space and, on laptops, battery charge and how much of its original capacity is left. It also suggests a restart after two weeks of uptime.
  • Right-click menus on processes, services, apps, startup items, ports and disk usage: copy, show in folder, search online and the usual actions.
  • Quick Open (Ctrl+K) jumps to any page, tab or action. Every list has a search box (Ctrl+F).
  • Click to copy IP addresses, ports and system details, or use Copy all on System info.
  • WinKit remembers its window: same size, position and maximised state next time.
  • Processes start sorted by memory, biggest first, like Task Manager.
  • Smaller and quieter. The interface is stored compressed, nothing polls while the window is minimised, and the portable exe is about 870 KB.
  • Fixes. Better contrast in every theme, correct plurals, crash recovery for the web view, safer updates of renamed portable copies, and many small layout fixes.

What WinKit is

  • One small file. The portable download is just WinKit.exe. Download it and run it.
  • A calm look. A warm, flat design with six themes (Dusk is the default) plus Auto, which follows Windows.
  • Same toolkit as 1.x. System, Network, Cleanup, Diagnostics and Appearance, rebuilt as a native Windows app.
  • Upgrades cleanly. The installer uses the same product ID as before, so it replaces an existing install.

What's included

System

  • Process manager with real memory and CPU figures, including protected Windows services, biggest memory users first. System and Idle can't be ended by mistake.
  • Click a program's path (in Processes or Startup) to open its folder in File Explorer
  • Startup manager, services manager (running services are shown in green), installed apps with uninstall
  • Environment variables editor and hosts file editor
  • System information with live uptime

Network

  • Ping and traceroute with live results and colour-coded latency, DNS lookup
  • Ports: every open port and connection with the program that owns it, so you can see what is using port 3000 or what is talking to the internet
  • IP configuration showing IPv4, IPv6, gateway, DNS servers and DHCP for every adapter
  • Flush DNS, renew/release DHCP, reset Winsock and TCP/IP (each asks for administrator approval)

Cleanup

  • Scans user and Windows temp files, the thumbnail cache, the Windows Update cache and the Recycle Bin
  • You review before anything is deleted, with a size bar per category, and the exact space freed is shown afterwards
  • Never follows junctions or symlinks, and refuses to clean drive roots or system folders

Diagnostics

  • 11 checks: disk health, disk space, DNS, drivers, internet, network adapters, services, startup, temp files, Windows integrity, Windows Update
  • 5 one-click fixers: flush DNS, clean temp files, restart update services, Device Manager shortcut, SFC/DISM repair with live output
  • Without administrator rights the Windows integrity check says so and offers Check as Administrator. It never reports false corruption.
  • The internet check falls back to a real connection test, so networks that block ping aren't reported as offline
  • Results are saved between sessions and summarised on the Dashboard. Opening the page shows your last results instead of scanning again; a scan runs on the first visit, when you press Run Diagnostics, or when the results are over 10 minutes old.

App

  • Dashboard with system overview, usage meters that turn amber and red as they fill, and quick actions
  • Six built-in themes (Dusk, Dawn, Midnight, Carbon, Slate, Light) picked from a visual appearance chooser, plus an Auto option that follows Windows live. A full custom theme editor and theme import/export
  • Activity log with severity colours, notifications, start minimized, start with Windows
  • Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+K quick open, Ctrl+F search, Ctrl+R refresh, Ctrl+B hide the sidebar, Ctrl+, settings, and Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+8 for the main pages
  • WinKit reopens where you left it, with the same size, position and maximised state
  • Click an IP address, port or system detail to copy it, or use Copy all on System info for a support request
  • The window title shows the page you are on, and the sidebar shows how many issues Diagnostics found
  • Quiet in the background: nothing polls while the window is minimised
  • Update check with checksum verification (a portable copy is updated in place under its own file name), optional crash reports (sent only when you click Send)

File
WinKitSetup-2.1.0.exe Installer (Program Files, Start Menu, uninstaller, self-updates)
WinKit-2.1.0-portable.exe Portable program, no install
WinKit-2.1.0-portable.zip Same portable exe, zipped (used by the built-in updater)
SHA256SUMS.txt Checksums

Requirements

  • Windows 10 version 1809 or later (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime. It is already included with Windows 11 and up-to-date Windows 10. If it's missing, WinKit offers the download link on first launch.

Changes from 1.x

  • The window uses the standard Windows title bar (dark themed) instead of the custom one.
  • The default theme is now Dusk. If you were on the old default (Midnight), WinKit switches you to Dusk once on first launch. You can choose Midnight again in Settings and it stays. Any other theme you picked is left alone.
  • Cleanup shows a progress bar and a Cancel button while scanning.
  • Diagnostics shows a live log while a fix is running.
  • Freeze in the process manager still only pauses the refresh, as in 1.x. It does not suspend the process.

Known issues

  • Some checks need administrator rights to give a full answer: Windows integrity (DISM) and Disk Health (SMART). Without them WinKit reports that instead of guessing. Use Run as Administrator in Settings, or the Check as Administrator button on the result.
  • This is a full rewrite, so please report anything that behaves differently from 1.x: https://github.com/Im4Theone/WinKit/issues

WinKit 2.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@Im4Theone Im4Theone released this 09 Oct 18:03

WinKit has been rebuilt from the ground up as a native Windows app. It is now a single WinKit.exe with no .NET runtime to bundle, and the interface is HTML/CSS/JS shown in an embedded Microsoft Edge WebView2 window. The tools, behaviour and your saved settings carry over from 1.x.

Highlights

  • One small file. The portable download is just WinKit.exe. Download it and run it.
  • Same toolkit, same behaviour. All five tool categories are ported from the 1.x source: System, Network, Cleanup, Diagnostics and Appearance.
  • A calmer new look. A warm, flat design with hairline-bordered cards and a muted palette. The new default theme is Dusk, with Dawn as its light companion.
  • Your data carries over. Settings, profile, activity history and custom themes use the same files and format as 1.x (%LOCALAPPDATA%\WinKit).
  • Upgrades cleanly. The installer uses the same product ID as 1.x, so 2.0 replaces an existing install and removes the old .NET files.

What's included

System

  • Process manager with real memory and CPU figures, including protected Windows services. System and Idle can't be ended by mistake.
  • Startup manager, services manager (running services are shown in green), installed apps with uninstall
  • Environment variables editor and hosts file editor

  • Six built-in themes (Dusk, Dawn, Midnight, Carbon, Slate, Light), a full custom theme editor with a live preview strip, theme import/export
  • Activity log with severity colours, notifications, start minimized, start with Windows
  • Keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+8 jump straight to Dashboard, System, Network, Cleanup, Diagnostics, Activity, Settings and About
  • Update check with checksum verification, optional crash reports (sent only when you click Send)

WinKit 1.2

1.2.0 — 2026-09-14

Production hardening pass across the whole app, plus the installer and portable build scripts.

Fixed

  • Elevated actions (Diagnostics repairs, Network Maintenance, the update installer, Restart as Administrator) could freeze the entire UI thread while a UAC prompt was on screen, since the elevated process launch ran directly on the calling thread instead of off it.
  • A Diagnostics repair (e.g. the DISM/SFC Windows Integrity fix) had no way to be cancelled once started.
  • Two Diagnostics fixes, or a scan and a fix, could run concurrently with no guard.
  • The Windows Integrity check and its repair both parsed DISM/SFC console output for English phrases, which would misreport on any non-English Windows install; now reported as Not Applicable instead of guessing.
  • The Disk Space check used percentage-only thresholds, which could flag a large drive with hundreds of GB free as "low on space"; now uses absolute free space.
  • The Driver check treated "not currently connected" (a normal state for any USB/dock device that isn't plugged in) as a warning.
  • The Dashboard and Process Manager kept polling (WMI queries, full process enumeration) every few seconds for the entire app session, even after navigating away from the page.
  • The Diagnostics "Show only issues" filter was bound to the wrong collection and silently had no effect.

Added

  • Installer (installer/WinKit.iss, built via installer/Publish-Installer.ps1) and portable (portable/Publish-Portable.ps1) build scripts, producing the self-contained WinKitSetup-<version>.exe and WinKit-<version>-portable.zip assets the auto-updater already looked for.
  • Diagnostics results are now ordered by what needs attention first (failed, then warning, then informational/passed) within each category, instead of raw check order.

Packaging

  • Both the installer and portable build are self-contained, ReadyToRun win-x64 builds - no separate .NET runtime install required either way.

Auto-updater simplification — no visible change, but the update pipeline is more robust.

Changed

  • The auto-updater now verifies downloads against the SHA256 digest GitHub already computes for every release asset, instead of fetching a separate .sha256 file. One fewer request per update, and no chance of a sidecar file ever drifting from the actual asset.
  • Release builds no longer generate .sha256 sidecar files — GitHub's own per-asset digest is the source of truth.

Bug fixes: Activity page and window dragging, plus removal of a window material setting that never actually worked.

Fixed

  • The Activity page could throw during rendering — an internal style tried to set its own Style property from within one of its own triggers, which WPF doesn't allow. This showed up as an empty Activity page, and the repeated failure also stalled the UI thread badly enough that the window couldn't be dragged while that page was open.

Removed

  • Mica and Acrylic window materials. The underlying DWM calls succeeded, but the translucent surface was never actually composited through WPF's client-area rendering, so the setting had no real visual effect despite appearing to. Rather than keep an option that silently does nothing, it's been removed — windows are now always a solid surface.

WinKit 1.1.0

WinKit 1.1.0

Adds error reporting and auto-updates, plus reliability fixes found through real use.

Fixed

  • Custom theme saving could crash the app. Saving a theme while another save was in flight (e.g. toggling a setting right after hitting Save) could throw a FileNotFoundException and show an error dialog. The root cause was a race condition in how settings/theme files were written to disk. Persistence now serializes writes per file, uses an atomic file swap instead of copy-then-delete, and automatically recovers if a file is ever found corrupted (it's quarantined for inspection instead of crashing the app on every future launch).
  • Saving a custom theme could visually flash back to a built-in theme for an instant right as the save completed, before settling back on your custom theme. This was a UI state bug in how the theme list refreshed, not a persistence issue — nothing was actually lost, but it looked alarming.
  • A light or pastel custom accent color could make button text unreadable. The color used for text drawn on top of the accent color ("Text on accent") wasn't actually part of the theme system — it was hardcoded. It's now a real, customizable field in the theme editor.
  • Custom themes could get the wrong titlebar color mode. Whether the window chrome renders in dark or light mode was being decided by the theme's name instead of its actual background color, so a custom theme could end up with mismatched titlebar styling.
  • Mica and Acrylic window materials didn't actually do anything visually, regardless of which one you picked in the theme editor — an opaque layer was unintentionally covering the translucent window surface. Both materials now render correctly.
  • "Off" animation intensity didn't disable animations. The notification fade-in/fade-out now genuinely turns off when animation intensity is set to Off, instead of always animating regardless of the setting.

Added

  • Error reporting ("Send to Developers"). When WinKit hits an unexpected error, you'll now see a dialog with Preview, Close, and Send to Developers. Preview shows the exact report that would be sent — WinKit version, Windows version, architecture, the failing component, exception details, and a timestamp — before you decide whether to send it. Nothing is ever sent automatically or silently; it only goes out if you click Send. Reports never include user files, credentials, activity history, full settings, or theme contents. If sending fails (e.g. no connection), the report isn't lost — you can retry or copy it manually.
  • Automatic updates. WinKit now checks GitHub Releases for a newer version on startup and periodically in the background (checks never block startup or the UI). You can also trigger a manual check from Settings → About. When an update is available you can install it, skip that specific version, or dismiss it and get reminded later — and automatic checking can be turned off entirely if you'd rather not be notified. Downloads are SHA-256 checksum-verified before anything runs, and the actual file replacement always happens via a separate small process after WinKit closes — never from inside the running app itself. Your settings, custom themes, and activity history are untouched by an update either way.

Downloads

  • WinKitSetup-1.1.0.exe (recommended) — installs to Program Files, adds a Start Menu shortcut, registers a normal uninstaller.
  • WinKit-1.1.0-win-x64-portable.zip — no installation; extract anywhere and run WinKit.exe.

Both are self-contained (the .NET runtime is bundled — nothing else to install) and require Windows 10 (build 22000+) or Windows 11, 64-bit. No account, no telemetry, nothing runs in the background beyond WinKit itself.
