Wildlife and Forestry Tools 1.113.62.1
Fix release: true ground distances on every projected DEM. Every tool that derives something from a DEM (the hillshades, Vector Ruggedness Measure, Surface Area and Ratio, Arc-Chord Ratio, Terrain Ruggedness Index, Topographic Position Index, Slope Position and Landform Classification, Topographic Wetness Index, LSRI, Topography along Lines, Split Lines into Topography Segments, the TPI Neighborhood Sampler, and the neighborhood tools that take a radius in ground units) now measures the distances between cells on the spheroid whatever the DEM's coordinate system. Before this release a projected DEM was read with its nominal cell size, which on Web Mercator understates every slope gradient by the cosine of the latitude (a true 30° slope at Flagstaff read 25.3°); UTM and State Plane were within a few hundredths of a percent and are essentially unchanged. The new method unprojects a lattice of cell centers and interpolates the true ground spans for every cell, so azimuthal and oblique projections are handled as well as Web Mercator. The run messages of every tool report the projection's scale-factor range. See the new help page Projection Distortion and Terrain Analysis.
Changes
- Extract Slope Values to Points and Extract Aspect Values to Points can now take a DEM instead of a finished slope or aspect raster (set What the raster holds to Elevation (DEM)). The default method is Horn's 3 x 3 finite difference, the one Esri's Slope and Aspect tools use, reproduced down to their NoData rule, so on a true-to-scale projection the values are identical to extracting from an Esri planar raster; a least-squares quadratic over a window of 3 to 15 cells is offered as well. Elevation units default from the DEM's vertical coordinate system.
- The Slope method (projected DEMs) parameter of Topographic Wetness Index, Slope Position Classification and Landform Classification is gone: slope is always computed from true ground distances. Scripts that passed
slope_methodneed that argument removed. - Esri's planar Slope and Aspect in ArcGIS Pro 3.7 were found to allow for projected scale themselves in testing, so no claim of a difference from them is made; on a latitude/longitude DEM, where Esri's documentation says to use the geodesic method, the tools here remain correct as before.
- New tests:
claude_tests/ground_geometry_test.pyandclaude_tests/geodesic_dem_test.py(an analytic surface written as DEMs in UTM, latitude/longitude, Web Mercator, Albers and polar stereographic at two latitudes, with every DEM tool checked against the analytic slope and aspect and against Esri's planar tools). - After upgrading, the first time you open a tool whose parameter list changed in this release (the two Extract tools, Topographic Wetness Index, Slope Position Classification and Landform Classification), ArcGIS Pro may show the values of your previous run in the wrong rows, since it restores remembered values by position. Correct the rows and run; Pro remembers the corrected values from then on.
Install: download WildlifeTools.esriAddinX below and double-click it, or drop it on an open ArcGIS Pro window; ArcGIS Pro 3.7 or later.
Wildlife and Forestry Tools 1.113.61.0
New tool: Extract Slope Values to Points (tool #113), in the Wetness, Slope and Extreme Values row of the Topographic Analysis Tools gallery. It does what Esri's Extract Values to Points does for a slope raster, except that it interpolates percent slope correctly (the four surrounding cells are averaged as angles and converted back, so cells of 50° and 70°, which are 119.2% and 274.7%, give 60° = 173.2% and not the 197.0% that averaging the percentages gives), it reads the raster's slope unit from its geoprocessing history and warns when your choice disagrees, it can add the field to the existing point feature class instead of making a copy, and it needs no extension license.
Changes
- Extract Aspect Values to Points gains the same Where to write the values choice: a new point feature class (a copy of the input) or a new field in the input feature class. Its parameter order changed (the new choice is third): keyword scripts are unaffected, but positional scripts and existing models need the tool re-added.
- Fix: when a tool ran from a script, a model or a saved preset, a unit or convention read from the raster's history could override the value you gave (for example, percent slope ran as degrees). Fixed in Aspect Focal Statistics, Aspect Transformation, Extract Aspect Values to Points, Aspect Zonal Statistics as Table, Slope Zonal Statistics as Table, Identify Termini Polygons and Clip Data to Analysis Area. Interactive runs were never affected.
- Slope Zonal Statistics as Table now also recognizes the slope unit of a raster made from the Geoprocessing pane, whose history records "Percent rise" or "Degree" rather than PERCENT_RISE or DEGREE.
- The Topographic Analysis Tools gallery tooltip now counts all 23 tools.

Wildlife and Forestry Tools 1.112.60.0
New tool: About the Add-in (tool #112), the sixth button of the Take a Break group. A card with the installed version and build date, a check against the newest release on GitHub, a citation you can copy, the license and the source code, the Lois Engelman Memorial Scholarship Fund the add-in supports, and buttons to the Tool Reference web site, the scholarship page and Northern Arizona University's giving page.
Changes
- The two Manage… entries at the foot of the Add Graphics and North Arrows galleries now use the Jenness Enterprises logo as their icon; the add-in no longer uses any Esri image.
- The add-in's version is stamped into the assembly at build time, so it is reported correctly wherever the add-in is installed.
- The description shown in ArcGIS Pro's Add-In Manager was rewritten.
