ADR 0026 project name
The project, the Rust crate, the Python package and the npm package are all named fiscalclock.
Last reviewed: 31 Oct 2026
Accepted on 31 Oct 2026 under the maintainer's delegation; may be revisited. The research proposal left the name open ("Project name, checked and claimed on crates.io, PyPI and npm at once"), and the maintainer asked for the roadmap and 0.1.0 to be decided and built without them. The name is used in every 0.1.0 manifest but not yet claimed on any registry, because nothing has been published.
The proposal says to pick the name early, check it on crates.io, PyPI and npm together, and claim all three before announcing. It notes that fiscal is taken on crates.io and fiscal-rs is reserved. As of 31 Oct 2026:
-
fiscalon crates.io is a Brazilian fiscal document library owned by another developer (crates.io). -
fiscal-rsis a reserved crate name owned by another developer (crates.io). -
fiscalclockdoes not exist on crates.io, PyPI or npm: each registry's API returns a not-found response for it. These URLs are not linked because they return HTTP 404 until the name is claimed; the check is recorded on the Evidence page.
The GitHub repository was already named fiscalclock, and the maintainer has a sibling project, workclock, which the proposal names as the home for business-day logic.
- The same name on all three registries, so users find every package.
- Free on all three at the time of the decision.
- Descriptive enough to find by searching for "fiscal".
Pros:
- Shortest and most searchable.
Cons:
- Taken on crates.io as of 31 Oct 2026.
Pros:
- Conventional for a Rust project.
Cons:
- Reserved by someone else on crates.io as of 31 Oct 2026, and a
-rssuffix is odd for Python and npm packages.
Pros:
- Free on all three registries as of 31 Oct 2026.
- Matches the existing repository name and pairs with workclock.
Cons:
- "clock" suggests time of day, which the library deliberately does not handle (ADR-0006).
- Availability can change until the name is claimed.
Pros:
- Could describe the library more literally.
Cons:
- No other candidate was checked on all three registries, so none can be compared on availability.
Option 3. Every manifest uses fiscalclock: the crate in crates/core/Cargo.toml, the Python project in pyproject.toml and the npm package in package.json. The name is claimed by publishing 0.1.0, which needs the maintainer's explicit go.
Good:
- One name across the repository, the wiki and all packages.
Bad:
- Until 0.1.0 is published, someone else could take the name on any registry. Availability must be re-checked just before publishing.
- The registries' search pages may rank other "fiscal" packages first; this is not measured.
