v0.1.0 – Initial Functional Release

Overview

This release marks the first functional version of ModConnect, a graphical Modbus client designed to simplify interaction with Modbus TCP and RTU devices.

The objective of this project is to provide a user-friendly alternative to existing Modbus tools by improving usability, device management, and multi-device operation within a single interface.

While this version is not feature-complete, the core architecture and functionality are fully operational.

Implemented Features

Protocol Support

  • Modbus TCP
  • Modbus RTU

Supported Function Codes

The following function codes have been tested and validated:

  • Read Holding Registers (0x03)
  • Read Input Registers (0x04)
  • Read Coils (0x01)
  • Read Discrete Inputs (0x02)

Planned Support

The following write function codes are planned for future releases:

  • Write Single Coil (0x05)
  • Write Single Register (0x06)
  • Write Multiple Coils (0x0F)
  • Write Multiple Registers (0x10)

GUI Capabilities

  • Add and manage multiple devices
  • Configure RTU and TCP connection parameters
  • Assign device aliases
  • Assign register aliases
  • Hide/Show device.
  • Connect and disconnect devices
  • Edit connection settings
  • Multi-device layout within a single window

Persistence

  • Device profiles stored locally in JSON format.
  • Registers and connection parameters are automatically saved.

Architecture Highlights

  • Synchronized register polling across devices
  • Centralized file handling
  • Modular class design
  • Scalable device management structure

Current Limitations

  • GUI layout requires refinement and visual polishing
  • Logging functionality not yet implemented
  • Error reporting can be improved
  • Performance optimizations are ongoing

This version should be considered early-stage but functional.

Project Vision

ModConnect aims to become a lightweight and intuitive Modbus client that:

  • Reduces the learning curve for engineers.
  • Supports multiple devices without requiring multiple application instances.
  • Provides persistent device profiles.
  • Enables efficient register monitoring and control.

Planned Improvements

Future releases will focus on:

  • GUI refinement and UX improvements.
  • Enhanced error handling and notifications.
  • Import/export of device profiles
  • Performance optimizations.
  • Logging and diagnostics.
  • Improved register data visualization.

Downloads

You can download the executable file from the assets below.

Note: The executable is not digitally signed. When running for the first time, Windows SmartScreen may show a warning. You can click 'More Info' and then 'Run Anyway' to proceed.

Otherwise, you can install and run the application following the instructions in the README.md

Feedback

Feedback, suggestions, and contributions are welcome.

This release establishes the foundation. Improvements will be incremental and structured.
