The dev package was already obsolete, dropped Lua dependency from Kong install script and changed CLI to use the LuaJit engine.

I am just concerned that some people might not have luajit in their PATH (only lua), and that this might break the CLI for them. We'll need to add a breaking change note to the changelog.

iic the debian package to install kong includes LuaJit. So my guess is that it wouldn't break anything (both LuaRocks and busted are running against LuaJit). Or am I missing something?

Then again, I have no idea how the debian package is generated and whether other distro's behave differently.

But people are installing Kong from many different packages, as well as from source. I am more worried about source and development installations. It's worth putting a note in the Changelog.

where and when to update the docs and changelog? getkong.org repo doesn't have versioned branches. And if we consider this 'breaking' (which I agree with @thibaultcha) then it should come in 0.6 and not 0.5.x and pushing it now would be a bad idea. Please advice...

some parts are versioned (docs) other parts are not (installation pages) the ones not versioned are okay to keep that way because we want to make sure people always get the most recent. so yes, update the site AFTER the release with the mentioned changes.

I think it is fine to open a PR against getkong.org's master with the appropriate changes and leave it there. When releasing 0.6 we'll merge it along with any other changes.

For the Changelog, it can be included in this PR in the "unreleased" section of the changelog. It is usually best to do so for any PR, but we often ignore it :(. However, it means a lot of work the day of the release to update the changelog.

Just waiting for @thefosk to acknowledge those changes so they are reflected in the package distributions.

@thibaultcha thibaultcha added pr/ready (but hold merge) No more concerns, but do not merge yet (probably a conflict of interest with another PR or release) and removed pr/status/needs review labels Dec 17, 2015

### Summary

#### 2.6.0
```
Release 2.6.0 Tue February 6 2024
        Security fixes:
      #789 #814  CVE-2023-52425 -- Fix quadratic runtime issues with big tokens
                   that can cause denial of service, in partial where
                   dealing with compressed XML input.  Applications
                   that parsed a document in one go -- a single call to
                   functions XML_Parse or XML_ParseBuffer -- were not affected.
                   The smaller the chunks/buffers you use for parsing
                   previously, the bigger the problem prior to the fix.
                   Backporters should be careful to no omit parts of
                   pull request #789 and to include earlier pull request #771,
                   in order to not break the fix.
           #777  CVE-2023-52426 -- Fix billion laughs attacks for users
                   compiling *without* XML_DTD defined (which is not common).
                   Users with XML_DTD defined have been protected since
                   Expat >=2.4.0 (and that was CVE-2013-0340 back then).
        Bug fixes:
                    external entities that start with a byte order mark
            #780  Fix NULL pointer dereference in setContext via
                    XML_ExternalEntityParserCreate for compilation with
                    XML_DTD undefined
       #812 #813  Protect against closing entities out of order
        Other changes:
            #723  Improve support for arc4random/arc4random_buf
       #771 #788  Improve buffer growth in XML_GetBuffer and XML_Parse
            #815  Autotools|CMake: Add missing -DXML_STATIC to pkg-config file
                    section "Cflags.private" in order to fix compilation
                    against static libexpat using pkg-config on Windows
       #724 #751  Autotools|CMake: Require a C99 compiler
                    (a de-facto requirement already since Expat 2.2.2 of 2017)
Release 2.6.0 Tue February 6 2024
        Security fixes:
      #789 #814  CVE-2023-52425 -- Fix quadratic runtime issues with big tokens
                   that can cause denial of service, in partial where
                   dealing with compressed XML input.  Applications
                   that parsed a document in one go -- a single call to
                   functions XML_Parse or XML_ParseBuffer -- were not affected.
                   The smaller the chunks/buffers you use for parsing
                   previously, the bigger the problem prior to the fix.
                   Backporters should be careful to no omit parts of
                   pull request #789 and to include earlier pull request #771,
                   in order to not break the fix.
           #777  CVE-2023-52426 -- Fix billion laughs attacks for users
                   compiling *without* XML_DTD defined (which is not common).
                   Users with XML_DTD defined have been protected since
                   Expat >=2.4.0 (and that was CVE-2013-0340 back then).
        Bug fixes:
            #753  Fix parse-size-dependent "invalid token" error for
                    external entities that start with a byte order mark
            #780  Fix NULL pointer dereference in setContext via
                    XML_ExternalEntityParserCreate for compilation with
                    XML_DTD undefined
       #812 #813  Protect against closing entities out of order
