The steward no longer recommends git stash for syncing a checkout.

Changed

  • Steward Dispatch step 4 gains one sentence after the shared-index guidance: never git stash to sync or tidy a checkout. In a shared checkout a stash carries another session's work away, and the stash stack (refs/stash) is shared by every worktree of a repository, so a stash pop in one worktree can apply another's entry. Separately, in a linked worktree on git 2.15 a git stash && git merge --ff-only && git stash pop sequence was observed once to leave the index with thousands of staged deletions while every file on disk was intact (a bare git commit would have committed those deletions). The cause was not established and this is not claimed as a git bug. The guidance is to commit your own paths first, then merge.
  • sync-from-core 0.2.1 step 1: a dirty tree now aborts with "commit your own paths first; if the dirty paths are another session's, wait for it; do not stash" instead of "commit or stash first". Proposed by a consumer (#70). auto-sync already said "Do not stash" and is unchanged.

Migration

  • None required.
