A 8x10 piece of Plexiglas was used to create a housing for the electronics to be added to the RC car. This meant that the RC hood would need to be removed and discarded :(. the Plexiglas was cut up into three panels (Base, Front, and Rear) for holding the various components used for the project.

Base Panel

The base panel holds the Raspberry Pi, GPS, and battery. The panel itself is made of Plexiglas 3.5" by 7.5". The panel is held up using the spoiler mount and vertical braces 2.75" high (mounted directly to the base).

Black holes connect to the other panels. Green depicts the Raspberry Pi. Blue is where the vertical mounts are located. Red depicts the GPS mount.

Front Panel

The front panel holds the camera and infrared device. The camera is mounted using velcro and secured with zipties.

Back Panel

The rear panel contains the Ardupilot APM module. It is mounted on Velcro and secured by zip ties.
Small L brackets were used to assemble the panels into a carrier for the new component.

Components mounted on the Front Panel were:

  • The Pi camera was mounted using Velcro and drilling holes for cable ties.
  • PIR sensor was mounted using 2 small drilled holes and using wire to secure the sensor.
  • The HC-06 Sonar sensor was mounted using 2 small drilled holes and using wire to secure the sensor. Here's a shot of the assembled panels:

Components mounted on the Base panel were:

  • The Raspberry Pi was mounted using three plastic mounting screws
  • The Lion Battery (for the Pi) was mounted using Velcro strips

Components mounted on the Rear Panel were:

  • The APM 2.6

Plastic standoffs were used to attache the assembled panels onto the RC Car frame. Here's a photo of the RC car frame with the assembled panels:
