Open Water film 1.3

@Leonxlnx Leonxlnx released this 22 Oct 18:02

The one-minute film, rendered offline by the engine at 1080p60.

  • Act II now clouds over the way a real storm arrives (building cumulus, a lowering dark deck, then rain, gale and lightning) instead of a squall front sweeping past in time-lapse.
  • Sound without crackle: seamless noise loops, soft low hull slaps, and thunder that stays in its own act.
  • open-water-v1.3-1080p60-master.mp4: full-quality master (CRF 16, ~337 MB). open-water.mp4: web/social encode (8 Mbit/s, ~61 MB).

@Leonxlnx Leonxlnx released this 22 Oct 13:13

The one-minute film after the last review round: 1920x1080, 60 fps, H.264 (CRF 16) with the soundtrack. The web encode (8 Mbit/s, good for posting) is media/open-water.mp4 in the repository.

Since 1.1:

  • Storm clouds optically thick like real cumulonimbus (shaded faces about half the sky's radiance), smooth storm faces, no slabs or bars at the horizon.
  • Rain shafts broad and uneven, thinning up into the base; a storm sky darker toward the horizon.
  • Foam without speckle or paper-flat caps, recalibrated to the Monahan whitecap law (within ~20%).
  • Glints back to fine sparkle; a graded golden-hour aureole; quieter spray at gale force.

The one-minute film, re-rendered after five further rounds of photo-referenced review: 1920x1080, 60 fps, H.264 (CRF 16) with the synthesized and recorded soundtrack. The web encode is in media/open-water.mp4.

What changed since 1.0:

  • Whitecaps calibrated to within ~10% of the Monahan law from 8.5 to 21 m/s, with an actively breaking share; opaque white cores, wind rows along the wind.
  • Rain lit by the deck light it scatters (no more darkened, beige rain); a textured downpour veil; distinct rain shafts.
  • Sky reflections blurred mostly in elevation on a rough sea (no khaki storm seas); a navy mid sea.
  • Clouds: the march reaches a squall line 20 km away; no double-counted cloud, no contour bands, history that follows the drifting clouds and the time-lapse front; a compact maritime aureole at golden hour.
  • Act II lit from behind the storm's flank: a shaded squall wall over a sunlit sea.
  • The storm sea's directional spreading now applied; younger, steeper storm seas.

@Leonxlnx Leonxlnx released this 21 Oct 07:26

A real-time, physically based ocean in pure WebGL2: FFT waves (Elfouhaily spectrum, 4 cascades), Hillaire atmosphere, volumetric clouds with a cumulonimbus squall line and shelf cloud, foam calibrated to Monahan whitecap coverage, Marshall-Palmer rain, lightning with thunder, a moonlit night, and synthesized plus recorded sound.

Attached: the one-minute film master (1080p60, H.264 CRF 16, 467 MB). A web encode is in the repository at media/open-water.mp4.
