ByteBrief 0.2.2 — Button feedback

Choose a tag to compare

@LinuxKernel44 LinuxKernel44 released this 19 Oct 13:14

What's new

  • Buttons react to a tap. Every control dims while pressed, "Follow this forum" turns into a green "Following" once done (and shows it when you come back to a followed forum), and one-shot actions such as saving a token or clearing what the app learned briefly confirm themselves.

Install

Use arm64-v8a on almost every recent phone, universal if unsure. It installs over 0.2.x and 0.1.x (same signing key). Verify with SHA256SUMS.

ByteBrief 0.2.1 — Faster refresh

Choose a tag to compare

@LinuxKernel44 LinuxKernel44 released this 19 Oct 12:50

What's new

  • Progress bar while sources refresh, with a done/total counter.
  • Parallel refresh: sources are fetched 4 at a time by default, which makes a full refresh noticeably faster. In Settings > Sync you can pick 2 to 8 at once, or turn it off to go one by one.
  • XDA Forums are still loaded one page at a time (the check runs in a WebView).

Install

Use arm64-v8a on almost every recent phone, universal if unsure. It installs over 0.2.0 and 0.1.x (same signing key). Verify with SHA256SUMS.

ByteBrief 0.2.0 — XDA Forums

Choose a tag to compare

@LinuxKernel44 LinuxKernel44 released this 18 Oct 13:39

XDA Forums

  • New source: follow XDA device forums by address or by browsing the forum tree (with a filter). New threads appear in For You, Browse, Search and Saved; open one to read it in full and keep it offline (up to 12 pages, quotes shortened). The AI features work on saved threads.
  • The forum's human-verification check runs in a hidden system WebView. If it needs a tap, a bottom sheet shows the page (eye button), and Sources shows "Action required".
  • Optional alerts for new threads per forum. Background refresh at most every 3 hours, on Wi-Fi by default. Public pages only, no sign-in; cookies are cleared when you stop following the last forum.
  • Database version 2 (new forums table, migrated without data loss; update from 0.1.2 tested).

Verified on an x86_64 emulator only (84 instrumented tests, JVM tests and lint pass). Not tested on a physical device: the verification check may behave differently on yours, and the HTML reader will break if XDA changes its layout (an error is shown, nothing is invented).

Signed with the same key as 0.1.x (certificate SHA-256 2b086ac8…ba3a6). Install the APK matching your device; for the OnePlus 15 use arm64-v8a.

@LinuxKernel44 LinuxKernel44 released this 16 Oct 14:11

ByteBrief 0.1.2 — new icon

New app icon: a glass AI chip with a star, as an adaptive launcher icon, a themed (monochrome) icon for Android 13+, and a status-bar icon.

Installs over 0.1.1 and 0.1.0 (same signing key; update from 0.1.1 tested on an emulator). Use bytebrief-v0.1.2-arm64-v8a-release.apk on a phone.
Verify with sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS. Signing certificate SHA-256: 2b086ac8327838b36acb5739f943bfd4e3c293ac9d25cfbbd6d0ff5efb6ba3a6.

Tested on an Android 16 emulator only (no physical or arm64 device); see the README for what is and is not verified.

ByteBrief 0.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@LinuxKernel44 LinuxKernel44 released this 16 Oct 14:03

ByteBrief 0.1.1 — settings fix

Fixes Settings and Sources: switches and chips saved their value but kept showing the old state, so they looked unresponsive.

  • "Forget what it learned" and "Delete saved summaries" now say what happened; deleting summaries asks first.
  • Buttons that were truncated or could overflow now wrap; dialog buttons no longer show the screen through them.
  • Onboarding: Back returns to the previous step, content stays above the keyboard, custom topics appear as chips.
  • "Updated now ago" now reads "Updated just now".

Installs over 0.1.0 (same signing key; update tested on an emulator). Use bytebrief-v0.1.1-arm64-v8a-release.apk on a phone.

ByteBrief 0.1.0

@LinuxKernel44 LinuxKernel44 released this 15 Oct 11:46

ByteBrief 0.1.0 — first release

A privacy-first tech reader: Hacker News, GitHub Trending, GitHub Releases and your own RSS/Atom feeds, summarized and
explained by a language model that runs on your phone. No account, no analytics, no cloud inference.

Which file?

File For
bytebrief-v0.1.0-arm64-v8a-release.apk (9.6 MB) Any current phone (this is the one you want)
bytebrief-v0.1.0-x86_64-release.apk Android emulators
bytebrief-v0.1.0-universal-release.apk Both ABIs in one file

Requires Android 13 (API 33) or newer. Language models are not included; the app downloads one only when you ask
(1.07 GB light model or 2.38 GB default), over Wi-Fi unless you confirm mobile data, and verifies it by SHA-256.

What was tested

  • 207 JVM unit tests and 71 instrumented tests (17 with real models) — all passing on an Android 16 emulator.
  • The signed, minified release APK was driven through first run, live sync, a paused-and-resumed 1.07 GB model download
    with hash verification, model load, benchmark, and an AI summary.

Read this before relying on it

  • Not tested on a physical phone. There has been no run on a OnePlus 15 or any arm64 device; speed, memory and heat
    on a Snapdragon are unmeasured. Use More → Language models → Run benchmark to measure your own device.
  • Liquid Glass performance on a real GPU is unmeasured. If it feels slow: Settings → Use solid surfaces.
  • No TalkBack testing. GitHub Trending is read from a web page with no official API and can break if GitHub changes it
    (the app then reports an error rather than showing nothing silently).
  • Small language models make mistakes. Outputs are validated and links are removed, but accuracy is not guaranteed.
