Great technology is not enough. You also need the tools that let people make the most of it.

I've spent a long time making Typhon — an embedded ACID database engine in .NET — fast: microsecond commits, snapshot isolation, cache-line-aware storage. Then I opened a database file to debug something and realized I couldn't see any of it. I'd built a black box.
