@Matthis Matthis released this 18 Oct 06:43

First release of ECpdfSign, a small desktop app that puts your handwritten signature (a PNG) onto a PDF. Everything happens on your computer, with no cloud, no account and no upload.

Download

Windows

ECpdfSign-0.1.0-portable.exe (Windows 11, 7 MB). It is a single portable file, so there is nothing to install: download it and double-click.

Windows SmartScreen: The EXE is not code-signed yet, so on first start Windows shows "Windows protected your PC". Click More info → Run anyway.

The app needs the WebView2 runtime. It is part of Windows 11 and usually present on Windows 10.

macOS

ECpdfSign-0.1.0-macos-universal.dmg (10 MB). It runs on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Open the DMG and drag ECpdfSign into Applications.

Gatekeeper: The app is not signed with an Apple Developer ID and not notarized yet, so macOS blocks the first start ("Apple could not verify …").

  1. Close the message.
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to ECpdfSign.
  3. Confirm.

On macOS 14 or older, right-click the app → Open works too. You only need to do this once.

The macOS build passes all automated tests on macOS and has been tested by hand on a Mac.

What it can do

  • Open a PDF and preview it. Multi-page documents get a thumbnail strip, like a print dialog.
  • Insert signatures from PNG files with transparency. Use as many as you like, on any page.
  • Move, scale and rotate each signature with the mouse. Rotation snaps at 0°/90°/180°/270°; hold Shift for 15° steps.
  • Place/date texts such as München, 18.10.2026:
    • You edit them directly on the page and pick the date from a calendar.
    • Full Unicode support (ä, ö, ü, ß, Ł, ø, …).
  • Save as a new PDF. The dialog suggests <Name>_signiert.pdf, and the original stays untouched unless you explicitly overwrite it.
  • WYSIWYG: the saved PDF matches the preview, including rotated pages.
  • Safety prompts:
    • a warning before saving would invalidate digital signatures already in the PDF;
    • a prompt before opening another PDF would discard unsaved work.
  • 100 % local: no network access, strict content security policy.

Good to know

  • This is a visible image signature, like signing a printout and scanning it. It is not a cryptographic (PAdES / eIDAS) digital signature.
  • Not supported yet:
    • password-protected PDFs;
    • some special PNGs (interlaced, animated).
  • Closing the window does not ask about unsaved changes yet.

See the README for usage and the roadmap.
