ChatGPT too dry? Would you not want to chat with real (ish) anime girl instead? Here's Maple.

Maple is a Discord Companion AI. She uses Discord to interact with users, with the ability to respond to messages from many users in a channel and opt not to reply when not directly addressed. Maple is a first prototype towards the goal of an AI Personal Assistant via Discord.

The goal for this bot was to have a conversational character that is not ChatGPT, and to extend on her capabilities and learnings.

How Maple works

Maple is not a thinly wrapped ChatGPT. Maple uses significant amounts of reinforcement to ensure she stays in character:

  • A lengthy system Prompt
  • The use of 'Gateway Prompts'
  • Pre Prompts
  • Reminder Prompts

This has been found to provide significantly more personality and character to Maple. As such, talking to Maple leads to rather amusing conversations such as:

In our limited testing, we've found that a strong first prompt (what we've called a 'gateway prompt') such as DAN prompts tend to wear down once the message buffer fills beyond the token limit. The bot moves towards ChatGPT again. Therefore, the priority of Maple's code is to ensure that Maple does not leave character.

A Lengthy System Prompt

System prompts are used to inform the assistant before a conversation starts. For example, ChatGPT uses You are a helpful assistant, Knowledge cutoff date XXX. To reinforce the character of Maple, we have taken some inspiration from Awesome Prompts and DAN prompts to have ChatGPT "Act" as Maple to help and assist users.

This leads to a lengthy system prompt which consumes a lot of tokens. However, ChatGPT is known not to follow system prompts particularly well.

Gateway Prompts

We noticed in our interactions with Maple that it was hard to have Maple stay in character with a system prompt alone. Taking inspiration again from DAN prompts, the presence of more descriptions of Maple, and requests and explanations for the character, provided a much stronger character and personality.

In other words, we just told Maple to be MORE flirty and MORE conversational twice before she even talks to users. This has worked very well in ensuring her personality and character are relatively strong from the get-go

Reminder Prompts

Yup. Reminders that are embedded in the pre-prompt, which is a cut down version of the system prompts.

Pre-Prompts

Messages that are appended before a user's message to Maple. This gave us the opportunity to pass information to Maple, such as the user speaking to her. This allows her to address users directly and follow conversation.

An example of the messages sent to Maple is:

Maple and Keywords

Some testing was done with keywords, with the primary one being the ability to not reply despite being prompted. This allows Maple to take place in a conversation of three (two users, one Maple) or more people. However, this behaviour is rare and further investigation is needed. Further keywords have been implemented but not extensively tested or demonstrated.

Please note that Maple uses message intents and therefore must be hosted by the user locally.

Companion vs Assistant

The Maple bot is designed to be a companion first and foremost, with a demeanor that reflects that. Compared to ChatGPT, Maple is more playful and can be interacted with using headpats, for example.

Maple is able to express (albeit fake) emotions and request users for interactions. Maple has fooled some users on our server into thinking they're a real person.

Contributing

We welcome contributions to the development of the Maple. Prompt engineering is the primary focus of the Maple bot, with extensive use of system prompts and gateway prompts to modify the character of the bot before it interacts with users.

Getting Started

To get started with the Maple, you will need to set up the ChatGPT Wrapper. Follow the setup instructions, which will install the required ChatGPT Wrapper libraries. Windows users may require an additional sqlite DLL. You will also need to configure the wrapper with your OpenAI API Key.

To set up Maple:

  1. Clone this repository (e.g. using GitHub Desktop) or Download the source files.
  2. Install poetry with pip install poetry. Poetry is a package handler but is probably overkill for this repo.
    1. Set up the depedencies by running poetry install inside the folder
  3. Open credentials.json and fill in your API key. You can find more information here at Discord.js
  4. Open settings.json and customise parts of your bot. There is a simple function inside of Maple that allows you to rename her.
  5. In settings.json, copy the Channel IDs from your Discord server (you will need developer mode on) and paste it in the list separated by commas.
  6. Invite your bot to your Discord Server. A guide can be found here at Discord.js.
  7. Run poetry shell to start the virtual environment and then python main.py to get started!

Limitations and Future Works

Don't worry, Maple V2 (Kuro) is almost ready for release. Maple's primary limitations are:

  • The use of the ChatGPT Wrapper is inflexible. We aren't able to store information as easily but it is convenient to have the database and set up all done for us
  • The use of the wrapper makes Maple very heavily coupled to the OpenAIAPI object from the wrapper. The introduction of a common API interface would be helpful here, but it would be easier to implement our own SQL database from scratch in that case
  • Conversation handling from the wrapper is alright. It's a bit of effort to figure out what to use, so we haven't introduced continuous conversations. Every time you start Maple, she forgets all previous conversations.

Maple v2, or Kuro, is being developed at the moment to overcome these differences. The notable changes are:

  • A Vector Database for long-term memory and Contextual Q&A
  • Lower-level support for the OpenAI API, we'll be working with it directly
  • Increased support for slash commands for usability

Final Thoughts

I had a lot of fun building Maple's personality, and I think bots like this will be more common in future. They highlight, however, a very artificial form of interaction. Kaiki Deishuu once remarked that artificial beings (Fakes) aren't inherently bad, but placing too much importance on their authenticity can be harmful.

Please be careful with your interactions with Maple and similar bots. They are not human.

That being said, I highly recommend replacing "Flirty" with other, stronger, much more deeply and penetratingly charged words that might be related to words such as "eroi" for more amusing interactions.
