Installation & Startup

BHAM is designed to be a zero-friction tool for system integrators. It is distributed as a standalone compiled binary, meaning you do not need to install Python, manage virtual environments, or deal with external library dependencies.

Windows

The easiest and recommended way to install BHAM on Windows 10 and 11 is through the Microsoft Windows Package Manager (WinGet).

Open PowerShell or Command Prompt and run: Powershell winget install BacsHelp.BHAM

Linux

For Debian/Ubuntu-based distributions and other Linux systems, you can use our one-line installation script. It handles the download, binary placement, and sets up the necessary serial port permissions.

Open your terminal and run:

curl -fsSL https://bacshelp.com/bham/install.sh | sudo bash

Manual Debian Package (.deb) Installation: If you prefer managing packages manually, you can download the latest .deb release from the GitHub Releases page and run:

sudo apt install ./bham_version_amd64.deb

Important Note: To allow BHAM to access physical RS485 serial interfaces (e.g., /dev/ttyUSB0), your user must be part of the dialout group. The install.sh script and the .deb package attempt to handle this automatically, but if you experience permission errors, run sudo usermod -aG dialout $USER and reboot.

Running BHAM

Once installed, BHAM operates as a local background daemon providing a modern web interface.

Open your terminal or command prompt.

Type bham and press Enter.

Open your web browser and navigate to: http://localhost:8000

From the web UI, you can immediately configure your adapters and start mapping your Modbus, BACnet, or KNX networks.
