Installing Geckium on specialised Operating Systems

Bruno Freitas edited this page Nov 15, 2024 · 5 revisions

Some Operating Systems have a different, more complicated and distro specific, set of instructions required to be followed to install Geckium. Below is a list of known specialised Operating Systems and their own installation instructions:

Fedora Silverblue / Kinoite

For users of immutable Linux distros, the recommended installation method of adding files to the /usr/lib directory is simply not possible due to the immutable nature of the root filesystem. Fortunately, for users of systemd powered immutable distros, a tool called systemd-sysext can be used to layer Geckium over the root filesystem as an extension image.

First, open a terminal within the Firefox Folder from the extracted zip file. Then, run the following commands to make the necessary directories:

# mkdir -p /var/lib/extensions/geckium/usr/lib64/firefox/
# mkdir -p /var/lib/extensions/geckium/usr/lib/extension-release.d/

Then, copy over the files for Geckium, and make a symbolic link for the release for the extension:

# cp -r * /var/lib/extensions/geckium/usr/lib64/firefox
# ln -sf /etc/os-release /var/lib/extensions/geckium/usr/lib/extension-release.d/extension-release.geckium

Finally, overlay the image, and optionally enable it to be automatically overlayed on boot:

# systemd-sysext merge
# systemctl enable systemd-sysext
