This release represents a major version upgrade from PostgreSQL 10.4.1 to PostgreSQL 18.1, bringing significant improvements, new features, and enhanced performance.

PostgreSQL 18.1 Features

PostgreSQL 18.1 includes numerous enhancements and new features:

  • Asynchronous I/O Subsystem: Improved performance with a new asynchronous I/O subsystem for better database throughput
  • Skip Scan Optimization: Support for "skip scan" lookups in multicolumn B-tree indexes, improving query performance
  • UUID v7 Support: New uuidv7() function for generating timestamp-ordered UUIDs

Upgrading from Previous Versions

Important Notes

⚠️ Major Version Upgrade: This is a major version upgrade from PostgreSQL 10.4.1 to 18.1.

Data Migration:

  • Existing databases from PostgreSQL 10.4.1 are not automatically compatible with PostgreSQL 18.1
  • You will need to use pg_dump to export your data from the old version and pg_restore to import it into the new version
  • Alternatively, use pg_upgrade for in-place upgrades (requires both versions temporarily)

Recommended Upgrade Path:

  1. Backup your existing databases using pg_dumpall from PostgreSQL 10.4.1
  2. Install PostgreSQL Portable 18.1 to a new location
  3. Restore your databases using psql or pg_restore

Usage

First Run

  1. Run PostgreSQLPortable.exe
  2. The database will automatically initialize on first use
  3. PostgreSQL server will start and open a psql session
  4. Type \q to quit and shutdown the server

Default Configuration

  • Port: 5432
  • Database: postgres
  • Username: postgres
  • Authentication: Trust (no password required for local connections)

Customization

You can customize settings by editing PostgreSQLPortable.ini in the portable app directory.
