This major release requires that you make changes to the configuration files and docker-compose.yml during the upgrade process. Refer to the patch notes below and the README for more information.

  • Adds the ability to upload videos.
    • FFmpeg is used to re-encode uploaded videos with the H.264 and AAC codecs.
    • If the re-encoded video exceeds the file size limit for a particular platform, it will be re-encoded again to fit within the limit.
    • Bluesky only supports embedding one video per post. Additionally, it is not possible to combine images and videos in one post.
    • Bluesky video uploads currently go through the "sad path".
    • If you are upgrading from an older version, you will need to perform some upgrade steps.
      • The config.json file for the Core must specify where the FFmpeg binaries are located.
      • The Docker image has pre-installed FFmpeg via apt, which puts the FFmpeg binaries in /usr/bin.
      • If you would like to disable video support, set the path to an empty string.
      • Refer to the README for more information.
  • Revamps media uploads into a job system.
    • The general process is as follows:
      • The client requests that the WebApp create a media job.
      • The WebApp returns a pre-signed URL for the S3 bucket.
      • The client uploads the file to the S3 bucket using the pre-signed URL.
      • The client notifies the WebApp when the upload is complete.
      • The WebApp sends an event to the Core.
      • When the Core receives the event, it processes the media.
      • The client occasionally polls the WebApp whether the job is complete.
      • If it was successfully processed, the WebApp returns the media ID. If the media could not be processed, the WebApp returns error information.
    • New helper functions have been added to BlueBirdDX.Api. Refer to the README for more information.
    • 4.x.x versions of BlueBirdDX.Api are compatible with the 5.0.0 WebApp, but clients using older API library versions will not be able to upload videos.
    • The WebApp and Core now have the ability to communicate with NATS.
    • If you are upgrading from an older version, you will need to perform some upgrade steps.
      • The docker-compose.yml file must include a NATS container.
      • The docker-compose.yml file must specify the name of the NATS server in the WebApp's environment variables section.
      • The config.json file for the Core must specify the name of the NATS server.
      • Refer to the README for more information.
  • Adds the ability to quote posts on Bluesky.
    • If posting to Twitter with a Bluesky quote, the character limit is 252 characters, as enough space is required for the link to the original post. This does not apply if the user has Twitter Blue.
    • TextWrapper has been updated to add a new endpoint which counts the number of characters in a given text.
    • If you are upgrading from an older version, you will need to perform some upgrade steps.
      • The config.json file for the Core must only specify the base URL of the WebApp, instead of specifying a complete URL format.
      • Refer to the README for more information.
  • Media uploaded to Bluesky now specifies the media's aspect ratio.
    • This removes the border around all images.
  • Updates the Airship library to 2.4.0.
