OpenMBEE & OpenSysML Workshops 2027

Leveraging Open Source in Systems Engineering

Welcome to the OpenMBEE Workshops wiki! This is the community workspace for planning, coordinating, and sharing materials for the upcoming 2027 OpenMBEE and OpenSysML workshop activities.

The workshops bring together systems engineers, researchers, tool developers, and open-source contributors to explore the evolving role of open-source technologies in systems engineering, with particular emphasis on SysML v2 and OpenSysML.

Planning in progress: Programs, speakers, session details, registration information, and hands-on activities will be updated as they are confirmed.

Interested in presenting, demonstrating a tool, contributing a modeling example, or joining an OpenSysML activity? Follow this wiki for updates. Information on participation, proposals, and registration will be added when available.

Community Activities & Interactive Discussions

Beyond presentations and technical demonstrations, the OpenMBEE and OpenSysML workshops will feature interactive community activities designed to encourage open dialogue, collaboration, and active participation.

Two complementary discussion formats are planned during the two workshop days.

Open Space — Community-Driven Sessions

Bring your ideas. Shape the agenda. Start a conversation.

Open Space Technology is a participant-driven workshop format in which attendees propose topics, organize discussions, and collaboratively explore subjects that matter to the community.

Rather than following a predefined agenda, participants create their own sessions around shared interests, challenges, and opportunities.

How it works:

  1. Participants propose discussion topics or questions.
  2. Topics are posted on a shared agenda board.
  3. Participants organize themselves into discussion groups.
  4. Everyone is free to join or move between sessions.
  5. Groups capture key findings, ideas, and proposed follow-up actions.

Potential discussion topics:

  • OpenSysML roadmap and community priorities
  • SysML v2 adoption, interoperability, and migration
  • Open-source MBSE tools and architectures
  • AI-assisted systems engineering
  • Community collaboration and contributions
  • Industry use cases and lessons learned

All participants are welcome to propose topics and facilitate sessions.

Fishbowl — Open Community Discussion Forum

An open conversation where everyone can take a seat.

The Fishbowl Discussion is an interactive discussion format that encourages direct exchange between participants while allowing the broader audience to actively join the conversation.

A small inner circle of four chairs forms the discussion area, surrounded by an outer circle of participants.

How it works:

  1. A discussion topic or question is introduced.
  2. Four participants begin the conversation in the inner circle.
  3. Anyone from the outer circle may join by tapping an inner-circle participant to exchange places.
  4. The conversation continues dynamically as participants rotate.
  5. A facilitator helps maintain a constructive and inclusive discussion.

The format encourages diverse perspectives, spontaneous participation, and open dialogue without relying on traditional presentation panels.

Potential discussion topics:

  • What should the OpenSysML community prioritize next?
  • How can open-source MBSE and commercial tools coexist?
  • What are the biggest barriers to SysML v2 adoption?
  • How can industry, academia, and open-source communities collaborate more effectively?
  • What role should AI play in the future of MBSE?

Everyone is encouraged to participate — whether by joining the inner circle, listening, or contributing new perspectives.

Participation

Both activities are open to workshop attendees. No formal presentation or advance preparation is required.

Session times, facilitation details, and topics will be announced as the workshop program is finalized.

Workshop Media & Community Coverage

OpenDaily: OpenMBEE & OpenSysML

Proposed daily podcast coverage — planning in progress

The MBSE Podcast is exploring the possibility of covering the 2027 OpenMBEE and OpenSysML workshops remotely through short daily interviews with workshop participants.

The proposed format would include:

  • Daily workshop highlights — Short reports covering important sessions, demonstrations, and discussions.
  • Participant interviews — Conversations with speakers, organizers, contributors, and attendees.
  • OpenSysML updates — News about open-source SysML v2 technologies, demonstrations, and community developments.
  • Community perspectives — Insights from practitioners and developers on the future of open-source MBSE.

Although the podcast hosts will not attend in person, remote interviews could provide a way to share workshop activities with the broader systems engineering community.

Status: Proposed; subject to host availability, participant coordination, and detailed planning.

OpenSource, OpenMic: OpenMBEE & OpenSysML

A proposed special podcast format featuring conversations about open-source systems engineering, OpenMBEE, OpenSysML, and SysML v2.

Potential topics include community projects, technical innovations, practical applications, and opportunities for collaboration.

Status: Concept under consideration.
