There is unlikely to be a new SDL_ttf release for the foreseeable future:

We use an unreleased version from HEAD as of 2020-11-09 because it has DPI scaling support:
https://hg.libsdl.org/SDL_ttf/rev/7dbd7cd826d6

DPI scaling can be used for rendering on HiDPI displays (RG350m) and displays with non-square pixels.

No response on this one from BR, though I tried pinging on IRC and another one of my patches was merged almost instantly
