@OwenKirby OwenKirby released this 29 Oct 14:07

Carnac OS 0.9.6

  • Wave check at power-on: if the PCM waves or the FOUNDATIONS bank are missing (for example after installing the .fwsc alone with another tool), the start-up screen shows the field with no standing stones and WAVES MISSING; if they come from another version, WAVES OUT OF DATE. The web installer, or pcm_store_upload.py sync, fixes it.
  • Everything else is as in 0.9.5: patches, performances and settings carry over unchanged.

Install with the web installer: it writes the firmware and then the waves.

The .fwsc holds the firmware only. The PCM waves and the FOUNDATIONS bank live in their own flash areas, so if you install the .fwsc with fm1_install.py or any other tool, also run the web installer once, or python src/hardware/pcm_store_upload.py sync from a checkout of this tag.

Carnac OS 0.9.5

  • Factory bank SAMHAIN: 32 patches + 9 performances (SAMHAIN, DUB OFFERING reworked)
  • Foundations wavetable bank (bank 0), PCM wave rework (MOONSONG, CAIRN SPIRIT)
  • New archs: FULL and DUAL SPREAD; SPREAD shown as SINGLE
  • Bigger, readable menus: 4 rows at 2x on every page, 3 on the ARP page; bigger knob dials
  • PERF page: L1/L2 PATCH, SEQ/ARP LINK and PERF PRESET load as you turn; GLOBAL rows MIDI first
  • Patch format v10 (cutoff mod 0..127, VEL > LEVEL ENV1-3, LFO DEPTH MOD); older patches migrate

Without that, FOUNDATIONS plays a sine and the PCM waves are silent.

New in 0.9.4

  • AMP DRIVE reworked: new TUBE and OVERDRIVE models, smoother SOFT/HARD/FOLD/TAPE curves, much more gain, and the level holds roughly even as DRIVE turns.
  • Sequence and arp names: name them on the SAVE page like patches and performances.
  • GLOBAL settings survive power-off: MIDI channels, CUSTOM CC1/CC2, BEND RANGE and CLOCK SOURCE no longer reset when a performance loads.
  • Tight MIDI: incoming notes and clock (USB or TRS) play at a steady 23 ms delay, and the clock locks to an external tempo.
  • Shared noise: one noise source for all voices, as on classic polysynths. Noisy patches use much less CPU.
  • MONO layers in DUAL/SPLIT take one voice and the other layer gets the rest (1 + 7). In SPLIT, layer 2 has its own VOICE MODE.
  • ARP step peek: hold a step key to see that step's values on the knobs.
  • DELAY SYNC divisions now run short to long across DELAY TIME. BINAURAL BEAT HZ is finer (0–15.9 Hz in 1/8 Hz steps).

Upgrading from 0.9.3

Patches, performances, sequences, arps and settings all carry over. A performance you saved with DELAY SYNC on may land on a different division, so set its DELAY TIME again. Driven patches sound different and can be up to 5 dB quieter.
