Familiar 0.1.1 makes the night easier to find your way through. Five fixes from the 0.1.0 playtest:

  • Nana's window lantern is easier to light: Nana now stands to the right of her door, and looking at the lantern offers to light it instead of knocking (#12).
  • Lanterns and doors work from a step away. A glint and an orange crosshair show when something is in reach, and "come closer" shows when it is not (#13).
  • The NEXT line moves on properly after the first knock and has room for a second line (#17).
  • A marker points to what is NEXT: a "v" with the distance, or an arrow at the side of the screen, and a glow at the place itself (#14).
  • The candy bag set down when you turn into the cat now glints and is labelled, so it can be found again (#15).

Saves from 0.1.0 load unchanged.

Play it in the browser at https://familiar.play.danielstephenson.dev, or download it below for Windows x64 or Linux x64 (an OpenGL 4.5 driver is needed). Each download has a .sha256 file to check it against.

This is a pre-release. The AI playtest of this build is in docs/playtests/0.1.1/.

The first release of Familiar: one Halloween night in Hollowell, a small New England hill town. You are Wren, twelve, out until midnight.

  • Trick-or-treat: pick a costume on Nana's walk, knock where the porch light is on, and tell a joke when a neighbour asks for a trick. Porch lights go off at 9 pm.
  • Turn into a cat (Q) to climb fences and roofs, squeeze through gaps, open latches from the inside and see the spirits of the night.
  • Keep Samhain with Nana: light the four family lanterns, gather apples, cinnamon and rosemary for her cider, carry it up Lantern Hill, and bring her old cat Smoke home by midnight.
  • Saves every two minutes, on F5 and when you quit; F9 loads the last save. A damaged save is set aside, never deleted, and the one before it loads.
  • Sound is made as you play (M turns it off), and the game works with touch in the browser.

Play it in the browser at https://familiar.play.danielstephenson.dev, or download it below for Windows x64 or Linux x64 (an OpenGL 4.5 driver is needed). Each download has a .sha256 file to check it against.

This is a pre-release. An AI playtest before it found no blockers, and the rough edges it did find (finding your way around town, the reach for lanterns and doors, small text at phone sizes) are tracked as issues #12-#19.
