Security update. If you run 0.4.0 or 0.4.1, your box picks this up from Settings > Updates.
Changes since 0.4.1
- The six-digit setup code can no longer be guessed by trying codes quickly. Setup now allows 5 tries per minute per device and 20 per minute in total, then asks you to wait a minute.
Changes in 0.4.1
- Default-deny firewall: only the dashboard, the
.localname, network setup (DHCP) and SSH (if you turned it on, rate-limited) can reach the box. - LLMNR (port 5355) turned off.
Early preview. JenerOS turns an old PC into your own home cloud, and you set it up from your phone. This is the first public build: try it, break it, and tell us what happened.
What works
- Setup from your phone: boot the PC, scan the QR code on its screen, create your owner account.
- Dashboard in any browser on your home network: system status, network, storage and updates.
- Storage: combine blank drives into one safe pool, with two copies of everything (mirror).
- Safe updates: two copies of the system (A and B). If a new version doesn't boot, the PC goes back to the old one.
- Read-only system, checked against tampering (dm-verity). Firewall on by default. SSH is off until you turn it on.
- Free and open source (GPL-3.0). No account, no paid tier, no disk or user limits.
Not yet
- Apps: the App Store shows what's coming, but apps can't be installed yet.
- The dashboard uses plain HTTP on your home network (no HTTPS yet).
- Update downloads are checked by SHA-256 hash only; signed releases and Secure Boot signing come later.
Requirements
A 64-bit x86 PC with UEFI, 4 GB RAM or more, and a drive of 32 GB or more for the system. Installing erases that drive.
Install on a PC
- Download
jeneros_0.4.2.img.xz. - Flash it to a USB stick or straight onto the target drive with balenaEtcher (it reads
.xzdirectly). - Boot the PC from it and scan the QR code on the screen with your phone.
Try it in a virtual machine (VMware)
- Download
jeneros_0.4.2-vmware.vmdk.xzand unpack it with 7-Zip. - Create a VM: Linux, Debian 12 64-bit, UEFI firmware, 4 GB RAM, bridged networking. Use the
.vmdkas its existing disk. - Start it, then open the address shown on its screen from a phone or computer on the same network.
Check your download
SHA256SUMS lists a fingerprint for every file. On Windows run certutil -hashfile <file> SHA256, on Linux or macOS sha256sum <file>.
The other files (.efi, .usr-*.raw.xz) are used by JenerOS boxes to update themselves. You don't need to download them.
