WinBack Recompiled v0.2.1

This release adds full RecompLauncher support and a Mods menu, and fixes the crash when closing the game.

You need your own ROM: WinBack - Covert Operations (USA), big-endian .z64, SHA-1 fa04477b321a95e1f7a2edcac5c09bfa6ef72041. No game data is included.

New

• RecompLauncher support: the launcher asks for your ROM and checks it, then prepares the game in a setup step. Window mode, resolution, anti-aliasing, Crop Overscan and Integer Scale can be changed on the game's page, which also has buttons to open the saves, mods and logs folders. Backups include your settings.
• Mods menu: turn mods on or off and change their settings. Turning a mod on or off takes effect after a restart, which the menu offers. A mod that can't be loaded is listed with the reason.
• Log file: when started from a launcher or without a console, the game writes logs/winback.log.
• Button names: the menu says Cross and Circle on PlayStation controllers.

Fixed

• The game no longer crashes while closing.

Known limitations

• RecompLauncher support and the Mods menu have been tested with scripted runs. They have had little testing inside the launcher itself or with real controllers.
• The launcher's Mods tab isn't available yet.
• Later missions have had little testing. Freezes or crashes are possible.
• Widescreen is not available yet. Rendering uses Vulkan.

Installing

1. Extract WinBackRecompiled-v0.2.1-Windows-x64.zip anywhere you can write to. To update, extract it over your existing folder; saves and settings are kept.
2. Run WinBackRecompiled.exe and select your ROM when asked (or place it next to the exe first).

Requires 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 and a GPU with Vulkan support.

If something goes wrong, please open an issue, say where it happened and attach logs/winback.log if you have one. Running WinBackRecompiled.exe --console also shows the log.

WinBack Recompiled v0.2.0

This release adds an in-game menu with Level Select and display settings, and fixes several rendering problems.

You need your own ROM: WinBack - Covert Operations (USA), big-endian .z64, SHA-1 fa04477b321a95e1f7a2edcac5c09bfa6ef72041. No game data is included.

New

• Menu: press Select on a controller or Escape on the keyboard at any time to open it. The game ignores your input while the menu is open.
• Level Select: jump to the start of any stage, or to any of its checkpoints. Checkpoints you reach while playing are recorded, so jumping to them restores the full game state.
• Display settings: window mode (Windowed, Borderless, Fullscreen), resolution, anti-aliasing, Crop Overscan (hides the black border the game leaves for TVs) and Integer Scale. Changes apply immediately and are saved in settings.json next to the game.
• Exit Game in the menu, with a confirmation.
• Analog camera turning: the right stick turns the camera at a speed that matches how far it is pushed. Full deflection matches the original C buttons.

Fixed

• The laser sight no longer flickers.
• Changing anti-aliasing or the resolution during play could freeze the picture for good.

Known limitations

• The menu and Level Select are new and have had limited testing with real controllers.
• The game can crash while closing. Your saves are not affected.
• Later missions have had little testing. Freezes or crashes are possible.
• Widescreen is not available yet. Rendering uses Vulkan.

WinBack Recompiled v0.1.0

First public release of WinBack Recompiled, a native PC port of WinBack: Covert Operations (N64, USA) made by static recompilation.

What works

• Boots through the intros, title screen and Controller Pak save into the first mission at 60 fps.
• Mission 1 has been play-tested by hand, including aiming with the laser sight.
• Keyboard and controller input, audio, fullscreen (F11 or Alt+Enter).
• Fully portable: the ROM copy, saves and all other data stay in the game's folder.
• Packaged for RecompLauncher and Quiver Launcher (includes recomplauncher.json).

Known limitations

• Later missions, game over and the remaining cutscenes have had little testing. Freezes or crashes are possible.
• No settings menu yet. Rendering uses Vulkan.
