What's new in v1.3 — a second window that adds up four separate accounts of your disk

A disk has at least four independent sources of truth about its own size, and
none of them knows about the other three:

source what it says where it comes from
the drive itself its physical size the drive's own geometry
the partition table how much of the drive is used by partitions at all the partition entry
the file system used and free GetDiskFreeSpaceEx
our scan how much we actually found in files this program

Most tools show one of these and say nothing about the rest. The new
Disk — where did the space go window puts all four next to each other and
points at the places where they disagree, because the answer is usually in a
gap rather than in any single number.

Each gap has its own list of suspects, and the window names them:

  • drive larger than the sum of its partitions → unallocated space, a hidden
    partition, a factory area (HPA/DCO)
  • partition larger than used + free → file-system accounting
  • used larger than what we found → files we are not allowed to see, or files
    we missed

The pie has five slices — data, system files, junk, free, and
unexplained. The last one is the point of the whole window: thin is
reassuring, thick shows you the problem before you have read a single word.

This window changes nothing on your disk. It reads, adds up and explains.
Every repair it mentions is something you do yourself, with a named tool.

It tells you what it could not see. Every scanner silently skips folders it
has no rights to, paths longer than 260 characters, and locked files — and then
prints a total as if it were complete. This one reports its own blind spot
instead of hiding it, and you can see at a glance whether the unexplained slice
is a real mystery or simply the part we were not allowed to read.

No administrator rights, and no request for them. This was the one thing
that could have sunk the feature, and it was measured rather than assumed:
opening a volume or a physical drive for reading is refused without elevation,
but opening it with zero desired access succeeds, and the metadata calls we
need read no data at all. So the drive and partition figures are available to
an ordinary user. File-level items that genuinely require elevation
(pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys, shadow copies) are not claimed — they are part
of what the window openly calls "system files" and does not itemise.

If the numbers still make no sense, you can take them to someone who knows.
The window writes everything it measured into a plain text report — the four
accounts, every gap, and what was unreadable — so you can hand it to a
technician or paste it into an assistant instead of trying to describe the
problem from memory.

The Disk button stays greyed out until you have run a scan. Our own scan is
one of the four accounts; without it the window would be comparing three
numbers and guessing at the fourth.

Nine fixes from one live test. The first person to use this window was not
the person who wrote it, and everything he tripped over is fixed: the window no
longer refuses to be made smaller; it says "partition" where it used to say
"volume"; partitions without a drive letter have their own legend entry; the
reread button says what it rereads; the heading names the drive you are looking
at; "everything adds up" now says what adds up to what; right-clicking a term
highlights it before searching, and searches technical terms in English, where
the answers are.

Scanning, preview, cleaning and every safety guard (AGE / LOCKED / JUNCTION /
the blue "found it, suggesting nothing" rule from v1.2) are untouched. The
seven lines this feature adds to the existing window are a button, its state, a
signal, the handler and the version number; everything else lives in two new
files.
