DLSS 5 Neural Rendering 1.3.0
DLSS 5 Neural Rendering 1.3.0
Changes
- Smooth-mode failures are now logged, with the same five-second throttling as Low latency mode. Unsupported feature creation no longer disappears into the Status field alone.
- Readable NGX error names accompany numeric creation/evaluation errors, including FeatureNotSupported, InvalidParameter, OutOfDate, OutOfGPUMemory, and Denied. FeatureNotSupported is not presented as proof that a particular GPU generation is the sole cause.
- Failed creation retries are limited to once every five seconds for unchanged creation settings. Changing resolution, style, preset, Temporal mode or processing path allows another attempt immediately.
- Added Advanced → Retry Feature Now to bypass the creation cooldown without restarting OBS.
- Added opt-in Advanced → Diagnostic logging. Logs record actual NGX core/runtime/shim paths, file versions and byte counts; adapter IDs and driver version; processing dimensions and creation settings; and input/output resource formats and flags. Restart OBS after enabling the option to request verbose NGX initialization logs. Creation-parameter logging can be enabled immediately; disabling stops forwarding immediately.
- Corrected the NGX logging structure to match NVIDIA's documented callback/level/disable-sinks ABI. Logging callbacks use a retained shim trampoline, and callback consumers are drained before plugin teardown.
- Release the retained DXGI adapter during bridge shutdown rather than leaving its final release to DLL teardown. Unsupported-feature tests cover this shutdown path.
- On processing failure, Smooth mode returns to live pass-through rather than holding an old enhanced result. Performance status does not overwrite the active worker failure.
- Corrected the README's GPU/runtime compatibility claims and added a troubleshooting procedure for issue #2.
GPU compatibility
This release improves diagnostics and failure handling; it does not add RTX 40-series support. As of October 21, 2026, NVIDIA's hardware support table lists DLSS 5 Neural Rendering for RTX 50-series. NVIDIA describes RTX 40-series support as planned in its DLSS 5 FAQ.
The 1.2.5 README repeated community reports about 310.8 on older GPUs. Those were not verified with this plugin and an unmodified runtime. We have no confirmed unmodified runtime recommendation for RTX 40-series. The same 310.9.16 file reportedly working on an RTX 5090 and failing on an RTX 4080 Laptop is consistent with a support limitation, but the systems also use different drivers.
0xBAD00001 is FeatureNotSupported in NVIDIA's NGX definitions: current system, hardware, and/or graphics API support is insufficient. Initialization succeeding does not guarantee that feature creation will succeed.
Validation
- Automated tests cover frame pacing/resolution behavior, result decoding, NGX structure sizes/offsets, the five-second creation cooldown, settings/manual retry bypass, and concurrent callback detach/reattach.
- Isolated OBS failure tests exercise FeatureNotSupported in both Smooth and Low latency modes with test-only NGX/NR fixtures. They check changing/nonblack pass-through, decoded status, bounded creation attempts, immediate manual/style retries, logging callbacks, and shutdown.
- Real-runtime checks use an RTX 5090, driver 617.14 and the locally installed NR runtime 310.8.0.0, with diagnostics enabled and disabled. Both diagnostics-on and diagnostics-off runs delivered 300 changing, nonblack frames in a ten-second window at 30 enhanced FPS, with zero missed render frames and clean shutdown. These do not reproduce or validate RTX 4080 Laptop compatibility or runtime 310.9.16.
Installation and diagnostics
Download obs-dlss5-nr-1.3.0-windows-x64.zip, close OBS, extract into C:\ProgramData\obs-studio\plugins\, and restart OBS. Replace both the plugin and the matching project-built nvngx.dll_obs.dll caller shim. Older shim versions do not contain the new logging exports and will produce a clear version-pairing error.
Continue supplying your own nvngx_dlssnr.dll at %APPDATA%\obs-studio\plugin_config\obs-dlss5-nr\runtime\nvngx_dlssnr.dll. NVIDIA's runtime and the failure-test fixtures are not included. The only uploaded release asset is the Windows x64 ZIP; it includes the README, license and these patch notes. GPU sharing remains experimental and disabled by default.
For a diagnostic report, enable Diagnostic logging, restart OBS, reproduce the failure, and share the OBS log after reviewing local file paths. Disable diagnostics after collecting the log.

DLSS 5 Neural Rendering 1.2.5
Changes
- Added a Processing Resolution dropdown: Source, 2160p, 1440p, 1080p, and 720p. Default: 1080p. Frames resize on the GPU before processing, retain their aspect ratio, and display at the original source size. Smaller inputs are not enlarged for processing.
- Fixed Smooth mode's readiness check blocking behind the inference worker's mutex.
- Fixed frame-rate limiting that could turn a 30 FPS setting into roughly 15 FPS under small timing variations. Limits now also apply in Low latency mode.
- Reuse completed output when OBS renders the filter more than once in a video tick.
- Keep only the newest pending frame, preserve pending history resets, and discard stale output when changing resolution or processing mode.
- Added actual enhanced FPS, processing dimensions, active path, and last processing time to Status and periodic OBS logs.
- Corrected the Smooth mode description: latency depends on processing time; it is not guaranteed to be one frame.
- Windows-only build/release pipeline with automated cadence/resolution regression tests. The only uploaded release asset is the Windows x64 ZIP, including these patch notes.
Suggested settings
- Start with Smooth + 1080p + Temporal off.
- For Temporal Mode, try Smooth + 720p if 1080p cannot reach your target enhanced FPS.
- Use Match source or an explicit NR frame-rate limit. OBS output FPS and enhanced FPS are different measurements.
- Existing Processing Mode and Temporal settings are retained. Select the suggested settings yourself when upgrading an existing filter.
Validation
Tested with the real OBS/D3D11 renderer and DLSS NR runtime on an RTX 5090 using an animated 3840x2160 synthetic source, 30 FPS output, five seconds of warm-up, and a ten-second measurement:
| Processing settings | Enhanced FPS | Missed OBS render frames |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth, 1080p, Temporal off | 30.0 | 0 |
| Smooth, 1080p, Temporal on | 20.9 | 0 |
| Smooth, 720p, Temporal on | 30.0 | 0 |
All five resolution options and switching between Smooth and Low latency passed the GPU smoke test. Automated tests cover jitter, rate changes, pauses, downsampling, aspect ratio, and smaller sources. These are synthetic-source results on one GPU, not a performance guarantee for every source or GPU.
Compatibility and installation
One generic Windows x64 package serves the runtime-supported NVIDIA RTX 20/30/40/50 series. There are no 5090-only compilation flags or GPU-generation restrictions in this build. This release was hardware-tested on an RTX 5090; other RTX generations retain runtime-dependent support and were not individually tested.
Extract the ZIP into C:\ProgramData\obs-studio\plugins\ and restart OBS. You must supply nvngx_dlssnr.dll yourself at %APPDATA%\obs-studio\plugin_config\obs-dlss5-nr\runtime\nvngx_dlssnr.dll. The ZIP contains the plugin and the project's caller shim (nvngx.dll_obs.dll), not NVIDIA's proprietary runtime.
The stable path still uses CPU staging. Experimental GPU sharing remains disabled by default and is only used in Low latency mode; its known 4K instability has not been resolved by this release. Temporal Mode currently uses the CPU-staged path.

DLSS 5 Neural Rendering 1.2.0
What's Changed
Fixed: OBS hang on exit (thanks @wildjo!)
The plugin was unloading nvngx_dlssnr.dll on shutdown, which deadlocks inside the NVIDIA D3D12 driver and wedges the OBS destroy queue — diagnosed and fixed by @wildjo in #1. The NGX modules are now left mapped for process lifetime (standard practice for driver-backed DLLs; the OS reclaims them at exit). Verified with repeated init/shutdown cycles on an RTX 5090.
New: Temporal Mode (optical-flow motion vectors)
DLSS NR now receives real motion vectors. A new Temporal Mode toggle estimates per-frame optical flow with the NVIDIA Optical Flow accelerator (nvofapi64.dll, provided by your installed driver — nothing extra to install) and feeds it to the neural renderer. Better temporal stability and less ghosting on movement. CPU staging path only; unavailable with zero-copy GPU mode. Includes NVOF capability/surface-format probing with graceful fallback across driver generations.

obs-dlss5-nr 1.1.0
obs-dlss5-nr v1.1.0
Unofficial DLSS 5 Neural Rendering filter for OBS Studio — runs NVIDIA DLSS 5 NR (NGX feature 18) on any video source with a Default / Natural / Cinematic style selector.
Features
- DLSS 5 NR on Game Capture, Media Source, Webcam — any video source
- Style: Default / Natural / Cinematic (live rebuild)
- Render Preset, Intensity, Local Tone, Local Structure, Skin Structure, Auto Mask — applied live
- Processing Mode:
- Smooth (default) — NR on a worker thread one frame behind, OBS keeps full frame rate
- Low latency — inline processing for game capture
- NR Frame Rate: Match source / 60 / 30 / 24 / 15 (performance dial; last enhanced frame is held between processed frames)
- Reset History button
- Fail-safe: any NGX/runtime error passes video through untouched and reports on the Status line
⚠️ Required runtime file — NOT included
The zip intentionally does not contain NVIDIA proprietary software. You need one file, obtained yourself:
- **
vngx_dlssnr.dll** (~158 MB, v310.8+)
Legitimate sources: your own install of a game that ships DLSS 5 NR (e.g. NBA 2K27 — copy it from the game folder), or an NVIDIA DLSS SDK release that includes it. We cannot provide or link this file.
Place it at:
%APPDATA%\obs-studio\plugin_config\obs-dlss5-nr\runtime\nvngx_dlssnr.dll
Everything else is automatic — the NGX core (_nvngx.dll) is discovered inside your installed NVIDIA driver.
Requirements
- Windows 10/11 x64 · NVIDIA RTX GPU · driver 616.56+ · OBS Studio 31.1+
- Install: extract the zip into
C:\ProgramData\obs-studio\plugins\
Known limitations
- NR is CPU-staged; the zero-copy GPU path is experimental and off by default
- No temporal motion vectors yet — fast motion may smear (in development)
- Use one NR filter at a time
Compatibility
- RTX 50xx: expected to work · RTX 40xx: works with Ada-patched runtimes · RTX 30xx: unverified · older/non-RTX/AMD/Intel: no
GPU compatibility: the community-standard 310.8 runtime reports RTX 20/30/40/50 support; verified by us on RTX 50.
Runtime acquisition options in the README (game installs like NBA 2K27, DLSS SDK, or community tools such as DLSS5-Swapper).
