Highlights

Lower CPU usage: Reduced processor use from previous release.

Improved sound playback: Some sounds now play at the correct speed and pitch. #2 No music may still occur (particularly after a beserk) pause then unpause to fix. A proper fix is on the works.

Steam Deck Installer fixes: May fix the steamdeck install issues #1

Outstanding Issues

Music should be better now. Please let me know if music doesn't start or if sound effects okay too fast resulting in high pitch.

Fixed

  • Long wait on the first start. The game sat in Task Manager for several minutes before its window opened on the first start. That was the graphics shaders being compiled; Setup now prepares them at the end of the install (about 2–3 minutes, with a message), so the game opens straight away.
  • Steam Deck / Proton: Setup failed at once with "Could not unpack Setup's files". Setup now unpacks everything itself. The game itself is still untested on the Deck, so reports are very welcome.

Already on v0.5 or v0.5.1? You don't need to reinstall for the start-up fix: only your very first start was slow, and later starts are quick.

How to update

  1. Download OrtaPC_Setup.exe from the v0.5.2 release.
  2. Close the game if it's running.
  3. Run OrtaPC_Setup.exe. If Windows SmartScreen warns you, choose More info → Run anyway.
  4. Setup finds your disc image by itself. If it doesn't, press Disc image... and choose your Panzer Dragoon Orta .iso.
  5. Next to Install to, press Browse... and choose the folder where the game is already installed (the folder with Panzer Dragoon Orta.exe in it).
  6. Press Install and wait about 20–30 minutes. Near the end it says "Preparing the graphics shaders" for 2–3 minutes; leave it running.
  7. When it says Finished, press Play or use the desktop shortcut.

Your saves and settings are kept. You need about 3 GB free on your Windows drive during the install, plus space for the game.

An update to v0.5 Beta. No game files are included: you still need your own disc image (.iso) of the North American release.

Install

Download OrtaPC_Setup.exe below and run it. It finds your disc image by itself, downloads Python and a compiler (about 300 MB), and builds the game for your PC (about 20–30 minutes). If you already have v0.5 installed, you can install over it: your settings and saves are kept.

What's new

  • Launcher window before the game starts: render resolution, fullscreen or window, window size, widescreen, VSync and volume. It works with mouse, touch, keyboard or a controller (D-pad to move, A to select, Start to play). It appears on the first start; hold Shift while starting the game to see it again, or tick "Show this window every time".
  • Standard resolution choices in the launcher and the F1 menu: Original (853 × 480), 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K and Native.
  • Runs better on handhelds and laptops: the default render resolution is now the original 480 lines (it was 2400, which was too heavy for machines like the ROG Ally). Raise it in the launcher or the F1 menu if your PC has the power.
  • Shaders are saved to disk (%LOCALAPPDATA%\xboxrecomp\shader_cache), so later sessions skip compiling them: less CPU load and smoother play after your first session.
  • Less diagnostic work while playing: logging that only helps development is skipped in normal play.

If you're updating from v0.5, your old settings.ini keeps its resolution, but the launcher appears the first time you start the new version, so you can lower it there.

Known issues

  • The first start after installing can take several minutes before the window opens (Windows checks the new program). Later starts are much quicker.
  • **Episode 3, the octopus enemy: ** the charged attack's hit effect appears near the octopus instead of in front of the player.
  • Speed: the game may run a little faster than on the Xbox. Not yet confirmed.
  • Pandora's Box: Pandora's Box content currently doesn't work. Loading these crashes the game.
  • Windows SmartScreen may warn about Setup because it isn't signed. Choose More info → Run anyway.

Reporting problems

Open an issue and attach setup_log.txt (install problems) or xbox_kernel.log (problems in the game). Both are in the install folder.

@SeveerJ SeveerJ released this 26 Oct 17:50

Panzer Dragoon Orta PC – v0.1.0 (first playable release)

A native Windows version of Panzer Dragoon Orta (original Xbox), built from your own copy of the game. The game's code is translated to C and compiled for PC. It runs on a PC reimplementation of the Xbox kernel, graphics (NV2A → Direct3D 11) and audio. Every episode can be played from start to finish.

No game files are included. You need your own copy of the game: a disc image (.iso) of the North American release, or a folder of its files.

Install

  1. Download OrtaPC_Setup.exe below and run it.
  2. Setup looks for your Orta disc image by itself and checks that it's the right game and release. If it can't find it, press Disc image... or Folder....
  3. Choose where to install and press Install.

Setup downloads Python and a compiler (about 300 MB). It then builds the game for your PC, which takes about 20–30 minutes. When it's done, press Play or use the desktop shortcut. Setup cleans up its temporary files afterwards. If it stops part-way, run it again and it carries on from where it stopped.

Needs: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), a DirectX 11 graphics card and an Xbox or other XInput controller. Leave about 10 GB free during setup.

Features

  • F1 settings menu (or Back + Start on the controller), which pauses the game: window or fullscreen, volume, controller options. Settings are saved to settings.ini.
  • Correct enemy and boss health for the North American release.
  • Saves go to %LOCALAPPDATA%\xboxrecomp. The game only saves when you accept the save screen at the end of an episode.

Known issues

  • The game can take minutes to start. It shows in Task Manager well before its window opens. This is under investigation; it's worth waiting.
  • Episode 3, the octopus enemy: the charged attack's hit effect appears near the octopus instead of in front of the player. AS the .
  • Episode 8: rarely, the game freezes just before the boss. Restart from your last save.
  • Windows SmartScreen may warn about Setup because it isn't signed. Choose More info → Run anyway.
  • Pandora's Box: None of the Pandora's Box content currently loads; they crash the game

Reporting problems

Open an issue and attach setup_log.txt (for install problems) or xbox_kernel.log (for problems in the game). Both are in the install folder.
