The first MegaPDF release for Linux (x86-64): fill in, tick, sign and correct PDFs, with nothing leaving your computer. No account, no network connection, free and open source.

Install

Recommended: add the MegaPDF APT repository (Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS and other Debian-based systems), so updates arrive with your normal system updates. The copy-paste commands and the repository's key fingerprint are on the install page:

https://electricrv.ca/megapdf/linux/

Or download a file below:

  • megapdf_2.0.0_amd64.deb: sudo apt install ./megapdf_2.0.0_amd64.deb. Updates don't arrive by themselves; the APT repository above is the way to get them.
  • megapdf-linux-x64-2.0.0.tar.gz: a self-contained build for any x86-64 distribution with glibc 2.35 or later. Unpack it and run ./install.sh inside: that puts MegaPDF in ~/.local, in your applications menu and on your PATH as megapdf (./uninstall.sh removes it).

Each file's SHA-256 is in the .sha256 file beside it.

What's in 2.0

  • Correct the document's own text far more often. Over a 22,000-edit test run, every one of the 112 edits 1.7 used to refuse now goes through, and none of them disturbs the page.
  • Redaction: mark text or a picture and MegaPDF removes it from the file. Whiteout ("Cover") only covers, and now says so.
  • Protected PDFs: open one with its password, and set, change or remove a password. Where the owner restricted what may be changed, MegaPDF respects that and says so.
  • Very large PDFs: a 2.5 GB file opens straight away, files over 2 GB save with a correct cross-reference table, and 4 GB+ files open quickly. Pages full of pictures draw several times faster.
  • One row of tools, with the pickers beside the tool they belong to and everything else under More.
  • It tells you what it's doing (opening, saving, checking the saved file, searching, printing), and stays quiet for anything under half a second.
  • Your work is safer: closing, quitting (Ctrl+W, Ctrl+Q) or opening another file with unsaved changes always asks first, and a failed save can no longer leave the original empty.
  • French (Canada and France).

On Linux, file dialogs are your desktop's own (GNOME, KDE and others, through the XDG portal), and printing goes through CUPS from MegaPDF's print window, so it needs lp (the cups-client package, which the .deb recommends). Full notes: release-notes-2.0.md

ARM computers aren't supported yet.
