Release list
Cone Player 1.1.0
Cone Player 1.1.0 brings autoplay for shows, an update notice and a portable zip that keeps its settings with it. Cone Player is a media player for Windows based on VLC media player, with Juxtopposed's "VLC Redesign" as its interface.
Cone Player follows the development branch of VLC 4, so a rough edge may still show up now and then. It runs next to an installed VLC with its own settings and data folder and never changes VLC's. Please report problems in Issues.
New in 1.1
- Update notice. Once a day Cone Player asks GitHub for the latest release and shows a small notice when a newer one is out, with Download (opens the release page) and Later. Settings > General has "Check for updates" (on by default) and Check Now. It sends nothing but that one request, and nothing at all when switched off.
- The portable zip keeps its settings in its own folder again: the
portablefolder next toCone.exe, as in the betas, so the zip never mixes its settings with an installed Cone Player. Coming from the 1.0 zip? Delete the new zip'sportablefolder before the first start to keep using your settings in%APPDATA%\Cone. - Password and key fields (the OpenSubtitles API key in Settings > Subtitles) have an eye button to show the key, and say "Saved" once it is stored.
Fixed
- A file double-clicked while Cone Player is still closing now opens in a new window instead of being lost.
- In fullscreen, the control bar no longer hides while the settings sidebar (or the queue) is open and the mouse is over it.
- Since 1.0.0: the seek bar preview shows the right picture on files with few keyframes (1.0.2), and dragging the seek bar no longer flickers (1.0.1).
Cone extras (not part of Juxtopposed's design)
Cone extras are features Cone Player adds beyond Juxtopposed's design (in neither her video nor her Figma file).
- Autoplay next episode ("Up Next"). Open an episode of a show folder (names like
S01E01,1x01orEpisode 1) and Cone Player asks once: "Looks like a show. Play episodes in a row?" Say yes, and near the end of each episode an Up Next card counts down to the next one, with Play now and Cancel. Settings > Playback > Episodes: Off, Ask for each show (the default) or Always, the countdown length, when the card shows, and "Ask if I'm still watching after 3 episodes". Single videos, clips, music and movies never trigger it.
Download
Two downloads, both for Windows 10 / 11, 64-bit. Their checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt.
Installer (recommended): coneplayer-1.1.0-win64.exe
- Run it. The files are not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn: choose More info, then Run anyway.
- Follow the pages. Cone Player installs to
C:\Program Files\Cone. Already have 1.0.x installed? The installer upgrades it in place and keeps your settings and library.
Portable zip: ConePlayer-1.1.0-win64.zip
- Unzip it anywhere and run
Cone.exein theConePlayer-1.1.0folder. Nothing gets installed. - Settings stay in the
portablefolder next toCone.exe. Delete that folder to use%APPDATA%\Coneinstead (shared with an installed Cone Player).
Known issues
- On a few HEVC files with many B-frames, switching the audio track can still stall the video, and quitting can then take 5 seconds before Cone Player ends itself. Settings and the resume position are kept.
- Closing Cone Player sometimes takes up to 5 seconds after its window disappears, until it ends itself. Settings and the resume position are kept.
- Pressing M (mute) shows only the mute icon, without "Pressed M".
- The Subtitle Duration Factor slider is still hidden: in this VLC 4 engine it made ASS / SSA subtitles disappear.
- New Cone Player texts are in English in every language for now.
- The portable zip doesn't show up in Windows' "Open with" menu. Use the installer for that, or drag files onto Cone Player.
- A Linux build follows as its own beta release.

Cone Player 1.0.2
Cone Player 1.0.2 is a bug fix update of Cone Player 1.0, a media player for Windows based on VLC media player, with Juxtopposed's "VLC Redesign" as its interface.
Cone Player follows the development branch of VLC 4, so a rough edge may still show up now and then. It runs next to an installed VLC with its own settings and data folder and never changes VLC's. Please report problems in Issues.
What's new in 1.0.2
Fixed
- Hovering the seek bar on files with few keyframes (for example screen recordings) now shows the picture at each point instead of the same one everywhere. Where a point is too far from a keyframe to load quickly, the preview shows its time only.
Still open, fixed in the next update
- A file double-clicked while Cone Player is still closing is not opened (#57).
- The portable zip will keep its settings in its own folder.
Also since 1.0.0 (in 1.0.1): dragging the seek bar no longer makes a lighter block flicker at the start of the bar.
Download
Two downloads, both for Windows 10 / 11, 64-bit. Their checksums are in SHA256SUMS.txt.
Installer (recommended): coneplayer-1.0.2-win64.exe
- Run it. The files are not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn: choose More info, then Run anyway.
- Follow the pages. Cone Player installs to
C:\Program Files\Cone, with a Start menu entry and, if you tick it, a desktop shortcut. - To open your videos with Cone Player by default: right click a file, Open with, Choose another app, Cone Player, Always. Or use Settings > Apps > Default apps > Cone Player. The installer lists Cone Player for VLC's video, audio and playlist types, but never takes a file type away from another player.
Uninstall it from Settings > Apps like any app. It asks before deleting your settings.
Portable zip: ConePlayer-1.0.2-win64.zip
- Unzip it anywhere and run
Cone.exein theConePlayer-1.0.2folder. Nothing gets installed. - Settings go to
%APPDATA%\Cone, shared with an installed Cone Player. To keep them next toCone.exeinstead, create an empty folder namedportablethere. SmartScreen may warn the same way: More info, Run anyway.
Already on 1.0.0 or 1.0.1? Run the new installer: it upgrades in place and keeps your settings and library.
Known issues
- On a few HEVC files with many B-frames, switching the audio track can still stall the video, and quitting can then take 5 seconds before Cone Player ends itself. Settings and the resume position are kept.
- Closing Cone Player sometimes takes up to 5 seconds after its window disappears, until it ends itself (settings and the resume position are kept). A file double-clicked during those seconds is not opened: open it again once Cone Player has closed. Starting Cone Player from the Start menu works as usual.
- Pressing M (mute) shows only the mute icon, without "Pressed M".
- The Subtitle Duration Factor slider is hidden for now: in this VLC 4 engine it made ASS / SSA subtitles disappear. A factor saved by a beta is reset to 0 at start, so those subtitles show again. The slider comes back once it works.
- Rarely, Windows may log a background error after closing Settings; nothing visible happens.
- New Cone Player texts are in English in every language for now.
- The portable zip doesn't show up in Windows' "Open with" menu. Use the installer for that, or drag files onto Cone Player.
- Like VLC, Cone Player keeps a small graphics cache in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Cone\cache, also when run from the zip. - Windows only for now. A Linux build follows as its own release.

Cone Player 1.0.0: Juxtopposed's redesign on a real VLC 4 fork, not a skin
Cone Player 1.0.0 is the first full release of Cone Player, a media player for Windows based on VLC media player, with Juxtopposed's "VLC Redesign" as its interface. It was called Cone during the betas.
Cone Player follows the development branch of VLC 4, so a rough edge may still show up now and then. It runs next to an installed VLC with its own settings and data folder and never changes VLC's. Please report problems in Issues.
Download
Two downloads, both for Windows 10 / 11, 64-bit. SHA256SUMS.txt holds the SHA-256 of both (check with Get-FileHash <file> -Algorithm SHA256 in PowerShell).
Installer (recommended): coneplayer-1.0.0-win64.exe
Portable zip: ConePlayer-1.0.0-win64.zip
- Unzip it anywhere and run
Cone.exein theConePlayer-1.0.0folder. Nothing gets installed. - Settings go to
%APPDATA%\Cone, shared with an installed Cone Player. To keep them next toCone.exeinstead, create an empty folder namedportablethere. SmartScreen may warn the same way: More info, Run anyway.
New since 0.2.0 beta
- A new name: Cone Player. The window, About, the tray, Settings > Apps and the installer all say Cone Player. Menus and messages keep the short name "Cone" ("About Cone", "Quit Cone").
- An installer that sets Cone Player up like a normal Windows app:
- Start menu, optional desktop shortcut, an entry in Settings > Apps with its size and an uninstaller;
- Cone Player listed in Open with and Default apps for the same file types as VLC, plus "Play with Cone Player" and "Add to Cone Player's Playlist" on files and folders, and AutoPlay for discs;
- an installed VLC keeps its default apps and settings, and both run side by side.
- Default subtitles look like the design: system sans-serif font, a size relative to the video and VLC's normal outline.
- "Ignore styling in ASS and SSA subtitles" (Settings > Subtitles > Advanced Options) draws styled anime and fansub dialogue in your own subtitle style. Signs and positioned text keep their place. It takes effect after a restart.
- The settings sidebar's tabs cross-fade as in the video. With Windows' animation effects turned off, they switch at once.
- Open Network Stream: a playlist link (for example an
.m3ufile) fills in the playlist name, and Save keeps it as a playlist under Network.
Fixed since 0.2.0 beta
- With an audio visualizer on (for example Spectrometer), switching the audio track no longer turns the visualizer window white on HEVC (x265) videos.
- Picking the Spectrometer visualizer could, rarely, crash Cone.
- Quitting after a long session on HEVC videos gets stuck far less often. A quit that still gets stuck ends by itself after 5 seconds, with your settings and resume position saved.
- In Settings, the Advanced Options bar at the bottom of a page was cut off, and a click on its lower edge closed Settings.
- The New Playlist dialog listed a library file as "Library item" instead of its name.
Cone extras (not part of Juxtopposed's design)
Cone extras are features Cone Player adds beyond Juxtopposed's design (in neither her video nor her Figma file). None is in 1.0.
- Autoplay next episode ("Up Next") comes in 1.1. When an episode of a show folder ends, an "Up next" card counts down to the next one. It can be set to Off, Ask for each show, or Always in Settings > Playback.

Cone Player 1.1.0 for Linux (beta)
Cone Player 1.1.0 for Linux (beta), x86_64: the same Cone Player as the Windows 1.1.0 release, built for Linux. Experimental: based on the development version of VLC media player (VLC 4).
Beta: this build was tested in a Linux sandbox only. Real sound output and GPU video decoding have not been tested on real Linux hardware yet. Please report what works and what doesn't in Issues. Windows users: get Cone Player 1.1.0.
- AppImage: download,
chmod +xit, start it. A folder namedportablenext to it keeps settings and library there. - Portable tarball: unpack, start
./cone;README-LINUX.txtinside explains the rest. - Needs a 64-bit Linux desktop (X11 or Wayland) with glibc 2.39 or newer.
- Cone keeps its own settings (
~/.config/Cone,~/.local/share/Cone,~/.cache/Cone) and runs next to an installed VLC.

Cone 0.2.0 beta: Juxtopposed's redesign on a real VLC 4 fork, not a skin
Cone 0.2.0 beta: the second public test build of Cone, a media player for Windows based on VLC media player, with Juxtopposed's "VLC Redesign" as its interface.
Experimental build. Cone follows the development branch of VLC 4, so expect rough edges and bugs. Keep your normal VLC installed: Cone runs next to it with its own settings and data folder and never changes VLC's. Please report problems in Issues.
Download and start
- Download
Cone-0.2.0-beta-win64.zipbelow (Windows 10 / 11, 64-bit). - Unzip it anywhere and run
Cone.exe. Nothing gets installed. - Settings stay inside the
portablefolder next toCone.exe. To keep your settings from 0.1.0 beta, copy itsportablefolder next to the newCone.exe.
The files are not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn the first time: choose "More info", then "Run anyway".
New in 0.2.0 beta
- Subtitle timeline on the seek bar: turn on "Show Subtitle Timeline on Seekbar" in the Playback tab. With a subtitle file (.srt, WebVTT, SSA / ASS), every line shows as a block on the seek bar. Drag the blocks to sync the subtitles, click a block to jump to it, or move the blocks with G / H.
- On-screen messages name the key you pressed, for example "Pressed C". A new "Show feedback for" slider sets how long messages stay.
- Additional command line options in Settings > General > Advanced Options, applied at every start.
- EQ presets show their curve icons, and the crop link keeps the ratio between the two sides.
- "All Cone Settings" (VLC's full preferences window) now uses Cone's look, logo, theme and accent.
- No file name over the video when a film starts. Turn it back on in Settings > Subtitles.
- Onboarding fills the whole window.
- About uses the dark redesign style.
Fixed since 0.1.0 beta
- With a Subtitle Duration Factor set, subtitles could freeze the picture while sound and the seek bar kept going.
- With a Subtitle Duration Factor set, switching to a picture-based subtitle track (DVD or Blu-ray subtitles) could crash Cone.
- In letterboxed films, subtitles were hidden under the control bar.
- Quitting could leave Cone running without a window. A stuck quit now ends by itself after 5 seconds, and your settings, window size and resume position are saved first.
- Escape now closes the library sidebar, also after searching in it.
- Opening the library no longer closes the queue (as in the video).
- Titles in the bottom bar were cut short ("Episode...") although there was room.
- Show presets: picking an audio visualizer no longer resets the subtitle and audio delays, and a preset's crop now reaches videos that start late.
- A speed or visualizer you chose once no longer comes back at every start.
- Light theme: no grey line at the top of the control bar, an opaque top bar, and visible search fields.
- External subtitle files are listed as "Name [Language]" instead of their full file name.
- Escape right after starting with a file could crash Cone.
- Chapter titles, the playlist menus (now with Favorite) and the Add Audio Tracks icon match the design.
- The video window title reads "Cone".
Known issues
- With an audio visualizer on (for example Spectrometer), switching the audio track (b) turns the visualizer window white.
- Picking the Spectrometer visualizer can, rarely, crash Cone (Windows audio).
- After a long session with many seeks, speed changes and track switches on some HEVC (x265) videos, quitting can take 5 seconds: VLC 4's video decoder gets stuck while stopping, and Cone then ends itself. Settings and the resume position are kept.
- Pressing M (mute) shows only the mute icon, without "Pressed M".
- Rarely, Windows may log a background error after closing Settings; no visible effect.
- New Cone texts are in English in every language for now.
- The app shows version 0.2.0; "beta" is only in the file names.
- The installer comes later; this beta is the portable zip only.
- Like VLC, Cone keeps a small graphics cache in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Cone\cache, also when run from the zip.
Cone extras (not part of Juxtopposed's design)
None in this release. Cone extras arrive after 1.0, starting with 1.1.

Cone 0.1.0 beta: Juxtopposed's redesign on a real VLC 4 fork (not a skin)
Cone 0.1.0 beta: the first public test build of Cone, a media player for Windows based on VLC media player, with Juxtopposed's "VLC Redesign" as its interface.
This is a beta: it tracks VLC 4 development code, so expect rough edges. Please report problems in Issues.
Download and start
- Download
Cone-0.1.0-beta-win64.zipbelow (Windows 10 / 11, 64-bit). - Unzip it anywhere and run
Cone.exe. Nothing gets installed. - Settings stay inside the
portablefolder next toCone.exe. Your installed VLC and its settings are not touched, and both can run side by side.
What's in it
- The redesigned player: a floating control bar and top bar, a seek bar with thumbnails, a cone-shaped volume control up to 200 %, and a tracks popup with Embedded and External Tracks.
- A settings sidebar (Playback, Video, Audio, Subtitles) with per-show presets, sleep timer, speed and subtitle sync sliders.
- A queue with bookmarks (Ctrl+B) and chapters, the redesigned main and right-click menus, Keyboard Shortcuts, and the new Settings with every page.
- A library with Home, Videos, Music, Playlists and Recent, a music view and a mini player.
- Customize Player and profiles, the onboarding, dark and light themes and accent colours.
- Subtitles move above the control bar while it shows.
- Cone has its own settings folder, its own entry in the Windows volume mixer and its own single-instance name, so it never takes over an installed VLC.
Known issues
- Rarely, Windows may log a background error after closing Settings; no visible effect.
- Escape does not close the library sidebar in the player; use the library button.
- New Cone texts are in English in every language for now.
- The app shows version 0.1.0; "beta" is only in the file names.
- The About dialog still uses the old light style in dark mode.
- In the light theme, a thin grey line shows at the top of the control bar.
- An external subtitle file is listed with its full file name.
- The installer comes later; this beta is the portable zip only.
- Like VLC, Cone keeps a small graphics cache in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Cone\cache, also when run from the zip.
