Reading Plato with Digital Tools

May 27, 2016: 17h00-18h15 CEST

Irine Darchia (Associate Professor in Classics, Institute of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Georgia)

During the session possibilities of reading and understanding Plato’s works using digital tools will be discussed based on Plato’s Phaedo.

Plato’s Phaedo is considered as one of the most distinguished dialogues due to its philosophical, religious and mythological aspects and its influence on Neo-Platonism and Christian Theology. Despite the fact that Phaedo has been investigated many times from different points of view by classicists and philosophers, the philological aspects of the dialogue (its morpho-syntactical and stylistic peculiarities) have not been studied, especially in the context of digital humanities, using the advanced methods of digital philology.

After successful research on Plato’s Phaedo using digital tools, the following results could be achieved:

  1. Research will be done on linguistic and stylistic peculiarities of Plato’s Phaedo using interdisciplinary approach and digital methods;

  2. Comparative analysis of the results achieved through traditional philological and digital methods will be provided;

  3. Plato’s Phaedo will be treebanked and annotated for research and teaching (e-learning) purposes;

  4. Digital philology methods will be introduced into Platonists society;

  5. Both students working with Ancient Greek and wider society interested in classics will be supported with a system localized for different language speakers.
