Puki 0.9.5. Installed games update themselves from here (parent settings).

Fixed

  • A crash that could close the game between questions (seen in Counting on a Galaxy Tab A7 Lite). If Puki ever closed by itself, this is it.

Puki's brain

  • The welcome screen now offers Puki's brain on tablets that can run it: a Download now button, or later from the parent settings.
  • When the download finishes, Puki starts thinking on the tablet by himself. Before, a switch had to be turned on.
  • A game moment that finds the brain still loading checks again, so Puki starts talking sooner after the first download.

Also

  • In English, the Words island shows A and B.
  • The parent settings show where to write with questions: hello@pukiparrot.com. A flagged line can now be sent from your own email.
  • The website moved to pukiparrot.com.

Puki 0.9.0: Puki thinks on the tablet. Installed games update themselves from here (parent settings).

A brain of his own, on the tablet

  • Puki's brain now runs on the tablet itself, offline, with no PC and no cloud. Turn it on in the parent settings: the Puki on this device card downloads it once (about 0.5 GB, best on Wi-Fi).
  • It runs on ordinary tablets: 64-bit, with about 3 GB of memory. On a Galaxy Tab A7 Lite a reply takes about a second and a half.
  • Four small models, all open on Hugging Face:
    • Brains writes his lines and checks what the child said before he answers. It's a 46M-parameter language model trained from scratch for Puki.
    • Beak reads Hebrew without vowel marks so every word comes out right. It's ours too.
    • Syrinx is his voice: BlueTTS's Noa in int8, twice as fast, with no audible difference.
    • Ears is kol-stream streaming speech recognition, made ready for phones.
  • For now the brain speaks Hebrew. Without it, Puki uses his recorded voice and every game works.

Kept on a short leash

  • Word lists and the brain's own check catch hurt, fear and big questions before he answers, and he gives a fixed, gentle answer that points to mommy or daddy.
  • A filter checks every line he writes. A line that fails is replaced by a recorded one.
  • In the parent settings, What Puki said shows his recent lines. A report you send by email carries his line and what happened in the game, never what your child said.

Private by design

  • Nothing about your child leaves the tablet: no recording is kept, and the child's words are held only in memory for the parent's list, then forgotten when the game closes.
  • The camera permission is gone. The app's only network use is the update check and the brain download you tap.

Moving from the PC brain
The PC brain is retired. The app no longer pairs with a PC, and the old pairing details are erased on update. If your family used it:

  1. Turn on the device brain: parent settings, Puki on this device, then download.

  2. Remove the PC program:

    • Puki.exe: in Puki's tray icon menu choose Uninstall Puki..., then delete Puki.exe.
    • Installed from the repo: run python brain/install.py --uninstall.

Full steps are in the README.

Also

  • The website, privacy policy and code-signing page are updated for this version, and the credits now name every model and dataset.

Puki 0.8.5: every game redone, and safe to hand over. Installed games update themselves from here (parent settings). Update the PC's brain too: install.py --update, or the new Puki.exe.

Every game, redone

  • Talk with Puki moves into a treehouse at sunset: Say It and Echo, with a microphone at Puki's beak and no dead ends.
  • Colors: balloons that pop, and a rainbow of her own. Shapes: build a picture, one piece at a time.
  • Animal Garden: the animals are at home and fed from a bowl, and they make their real sounds (thirteen recordings, credited in docs/sound-credits.md).
  • Counting: a hungry rabbit who wants just so many carrots, given one at a time.
  • Words: more letters in Hebrew and English, starting with the familiar ones, and levels that use them.
  • Music: tunes she can win. Dance and Freeze: a real dance floor and drawn moves. Peekaboo: barn doors that open, and a proper reveal.
  • My Day: the rooms lead into each other, and every day is different. Dressing follows the weather (sun, rain or a pyjama day) in any order; the table is laid for Teddy, Puki, a cat or a rabbit; the wash is a car, a truck or a bike; teeth belong to Teddy, a lion or a crocodile. Bath in three steps, and bedtime in a bedroom.
  • Drawing: the work stays, pages wait on a shelf, and the bin needs a hold, so nothing is wiped by accident.
  • Stars and stickers: earning a sticker is a moment she sees, and the album has spreads to fill.
  • Levels mean something: hints count, and a game moves up only when she really managed.

Puki

  • He comes alive: his beak moves, he reacts in every game, and on the hub he calls out an island when she's idle.
  • Remembers (on the PC): a diary of playing, so he can say "yesterday you fed the elephant!". Parents run it from the dashboard: pause, forget one thing, or erase it all. Spoken answers and sensitive moments are never kept, and the log keeps 90 days.
  • Answer out loud: after a question in Colors, Counting, the Animal Garden and Peekaboo, she can say the answer instead of tapping it (parent settings).
  • Line packs: Puki's lines for the games' moments are written at night on the PC and played only after a parent approves them.
  • Better pronunciation: Puki's own table for words the reading model gets wrong, and the recorded lines re-recorded with reviewed readings.

Safe to hand over

  • The microphone always stops, the time limit holds, and back can't quit the game by accident.

On the phone

  • The phone's brain hears with new ears (kol-stream, streaming speech recognition) in place of Whisper, and stops listening 0.8 s after she goes quiet.

Under the hood

  • Smoother everywhere: the hub at 60 fps on a Tab A7 Lite, every game compiled ahead of time, quicker start-up, and plain cuts between screens.
  • Every screen fits a phone.
  • The website and privacy policy match this version.

Puki 0.7: most of v1. Installed games update themselves from here (parent settings).

New games and toys

  • Counting one by one: each thing hops and shows its number, and Puki repeats the last one.
  • Shadow match in the Animal Garden.
  • Drawing: stamps, pages to color in, tracing letters and numbers, an eraser, a tap on the bin to start over, and a camera that saves the picture to the gallery (Pictures/Puki).
  • My Day: baking a cake in the kitchen and washing a muddy car in the garage. Dress-up and bath are redrawn, with a drawn child whose clothes fit.
  • Dance and Freeze, from the music stage, with its own track.
  • Offline Puki: without his brain, the parrot still answers taps with giggles and squawks.

Puki's brain

  • Safety nets for what the child says, on the PC and on the phone: hurt, danger, wanting mommy or daddy, big questions and secrets get a fixed, gentle reply, and every line Puki says is checked for promises and bonding.
  • מלשין לרנינג (parent settings): see what Puki said since the game opened, and flag anything that wasn't right. Reports stay at home, to fix Puki by.
  • Faster first reply after a sleep, and the PC's speech recognition picks the GPU reliably.

On the PC

  • PC updates are signed: install.py --update downloads puki-brain-0.7.0.zip from this release and installs it only if its signature checks out.
  • Puki runs from its own install folder (~/puki-brain/brain), not the folder it was installed from. After updating an existing Linux or Windows (repo) install, the tablet pairs again once: scan the new QR code on the dashboard.
  • The installer ends by asking Puki to talk, in Hebrew and English.
  • Linux: the brain is no longer stopped right after it wakes.

Under the hood

  • A hygiene, security and performance pass: pinned pairing from the installer's QR code, a lockout that counts every try, local services that answer only the doorbell, quieter logs, smoother screens on the tablet, Compose 1.8.

Three new toys.

  • Peekaboo barn (new island): an animal hides on the farm and its sound gives it away. Find it in the barn, behind the bush or the haystack, or in the tree stump. Nothing to get wrong: other spots send out a butterfly and a clue.
  • Echo Puki (new island): she says anything and Puki says it back in a silly parrot voice. No PC or internet needed, and nothing is kept.
  • A calm goodbye: when the time limit is up, evening falls over the game, Puki yawns, waves and says see you soon, and the music fades. No countdown.

The PC side hasn't changed since 0.5.1; its Puki.exe is still current.

A cleanup release.

  • The PC brain can't be left holding the GPU: if the doorbell is closed abruptly (a crash, Task Manager), Gemma and the brain now close with it, and leftovers from older versions are cleared when it starts.
  • Phones: in the animal game the food sits beside the animal, which was squeezed tiny, and the hub islands no longer pile up.
  • Tablets: the hub is smoother.
  • Every file the PC installer downloads is pinned to a known SHA-256.

Update the PC with the new Puki.exe below, or: python brain/install.py --update

The tablet and the PC now talk over HTTPS: the PC makes its own certificate, the pairing QR code carries its fingerprint, and the app talks only to that PC.

Update the PC first, then the app: this app can't talk to an older PC brain.

  • With Puki.exe: download the new Puki.exe below and run it (it replaces its own files; settings and models stay).
  • From a copy of the repo: python brain/install.py --update
Then pair again by scanning the QR code on the PC's dashboard.

Also fixes the PC's doorbell not starting from Windows login or Puki.exe (since 0.3.2), and console windows flashing from Puki.exe.

Puki is now signed with its own release key (certificate SHA-256 a799cab5bcf83c20c754490f8d0eb271cf844e2b7e69518760789f2a96eb3c3d). 0.4.0 was signed with a development key, so it can't update to this one: uninstall Puki 0.4.0 first, then install this. From here on, updates install over the previous version as usual.

Puki has a new app ID (io.github.tomsadeh.puki), so this installs as a new app next to the old one and starts fresh: set it up again (pair with the PC by scanning the QR code on its dashboard), then uninstall the old Puki. On a phone with the brain on the phone, its models download again. Also: fewer repeated parts in the code, tests for the PC brain's persona and for the level rule.

Fixes the phone brain: Puki on the phone couldn't reply (Android hid the GPU's OpenCL library from the app), which also froze the screen for seconds. Smoother on tablets: backgrounds, confetti, painting and dragging redraw far less each frame. Privacy and safety: no Android cloud backups, nothing the child says in the system log, the pairing code kept out of logs, the PC's firewall rule limited to the home network. A smaller download (shrunk release build), sky-blue start screen, newer English voices, and the first automated tests.
