The actual invocation is correct and default.vcl doesn't exist any more. I added '-j solaris' but does this break upstream (ie NetBSD)?

I added "-j solaris" too. Is this bad for upstream - i.e. breaks NetBSD stuff?

You're right, the upstream maintainer who packaged wip/varnish* simply reused the old SMF manifest from www/varnish, likely didn't have a way to test.

I fixed this now, also bumped to the just released 5.1.1 version.
