Translation and Wordbook
Translation is optional. Reading, highlighting, and annotation do not require a network service or API key.
| Provider | Best for | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| Bundled ECDICT | One English word | Offline, no setup |
| Argos Translate | Sentences and paragraphs | Local Python environment and language model |
| LibreTranslate | Self-hosted translation | Compatible HTTP endpoint |
| DeepSeek | Remote academic translation | Your own API key |
Single English words prefer the bundled ECDICT dictionary. It can provide phonetics, Chinese meanings, English definitions, parts of speech, and word forms without Python or network access. The dictionary is compressed into shards, and the background worker loads only the shard needed for the current word rather than holding the complete dictionary in memory.
- Select a word, sentence, or paragraph.
- Choose Translate in the inline toolbar.
- A single English word may show dictionary details and Save to Wordbook.
- Longer text is sent to the configured sentence-translation provider.
Choose Argos, LibreTranslate, or DeepSeek directly in Show panel → Translation. Invalid provider values are rejected rather than being treated as a network fallback.
Translation responses are associated with the selected text and active PDF so an older asynchronous response cannot replace a newer one.
Choose Save to Wordbook from a dictionary result. Each PDF has its own structured wordbook containing definitions and optional notes.
Open Show panel → Wordbook to review or remove saved words.
Run Inleaf Reader: Set DeepSeek API Key. The key is stored in VS Code SecretStorage and is not written to settings, the Webview, logs, or reading sidecars.
Run Inleaf Reader: Clear DeepSeek API Key to remove it.
Run Inleaf Reader: Diagnose Translation Setup to check the bundled dictionary, configured provider, Python executable, and Argos readiness.
For Argos setup details, see the repository README.
