What's new in 0.4.0

  • Your colour everywhere: the colour you pick in Options > Player now shows on your troops, lord, flags, stats graphs, score screen and chat names (saves keep their colours). Classic and custom trails now set player colours too
  • Allies panel: give orders to allied lords, send and request goods
  • Free Build: the Events menu (plague, fire, bandits, fairs, invasions with presets) and the extreme powers bar
  • Control groups panel on the troops tab
  • Advanced Skirmish Options (14 rule switches, remembered), Extreme toggles, map list search and sorting
  • Trail Customize keeps the mission's start positions, castles and building switches
  • The game pauses while the score screen is up
  • Fix: projectile maths now matches the original game exactly on every computer (before, about 1 in 20 arrow and rock angles came out slightly different on Macs), so Mac and Linux LAN games stay in sync
  • Fixes: building panel closes after Delete, sliders can be dragged, cost lines for Shift/Ctrl recruiting

Install

  1. Open the DMG and drag Strong Hold into Applications.
  2. First open: right-click the app > Open. On macOS 15+, open it once, then System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway (the app isn't notarized yet).
  3. The setup window gets your own copy of the game once: from CrossOver/Steam on this Mac, a folder, or a download from Steam with your account (scan a code with the Steam phone app, or user name + password + Steam Guard). About 8 GB of disk and a few minutes.

Coming from "Stronghold Crusader (Rust)"? Same app, new name. Drag the old app to the Bin; your download, settings and saves move over on first open.

Needs an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 12+, and Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition on your Steam account.

Inside the native engine and Valve's DepotDownloader 3.4.0 (GPL-2.0, source: https://github.com/SteamRE/DepotDownloader/tree/DepotDownloader_3.4.0) for the Steam download. No files from the game.
