Mplus Tools is an Excel Add-In for automating many of the processes associated with Mplus. Mplus Tools has the following features:

  • Create an Mplus input file from an Excel worksheet, using the first row as variable names
  • Format certain types of Mplus output, including correlation tables, confirmatory factor analysis tables, regression tables, and fit statistics, which can be easily copied into Microsoft Word
  • Generate simulated datasets for Monte Carlo studies, including an Mplus input file to load the data. It can also generate batches of syntax files for use with multiple generated datasets.
  • Calculate additional statistics, including Cronbach's Alpha, Coefficient Omega, average variance extracted, and relative importance

Installation

Step #1: Create a Trusted Folder

  1. In Excel, click File > Options.
  2. Click Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Trusted Locations.
  3. Click Add new location
  4. Click Browse to find the folder, select the folder you want to install MplusTools into (e.g., “C:\Users\johnsmith\Documents\Mplus”), and then click OK.

Step #2: Copy the “Mplus Tools.xlam” file into the Trusted Folder.

Step #3: Load “Mplus Tools” as an Add-In:

  1. In Excel, click File > Options
  2. Click Add-ins
  3. Choose “Excel Add-ins” from the dropdown menu and click “Go…”
  4. In the “Add-ins” window, click “Browse…” to find the Trusted Folder, and then choose the “Mplus Tools.xlam” file. Ensure that “Mplus Tools” is checked.
  5. Restart Excel

If this procedure is successful, you should be able to see “Mplus tools” appear as a menu item under the “Add-ins” ribbon.

Changes

Version 1.0.3:

  • Fixed a bug causing the Monte Carlo procedure to produce exactly the same dataset

Version 1.0.2:

  • Fixed the duplicates algorithm so that compares the two variable names that have been formatted to 8 characters or fewer using the "format_mplus" function
  • Modified the "format_mplus" algorithm for formatting the Mplus variable names.
  • Fixed a bug in the observed correlation tables that would not allow you to display variable names / labels.

Version 1.0.1:

  • Fixed bug in Fit Statistics tabular output where the DF and p were not displayed for the chi-square statistic
  • Fixed a bug in which MEANS/INTERCEPTS/THRESHOLDS were not properly loaded from the sample statistics for categorical variables
