LeanVPN for Android 0.1.0 (alpha)
The first public build of LeanVPN for Android: an unofficial, minimal Proton VPN client with no screens. It's a Quick Settings tile. Tap to connect, tap to disconnect, and the tile's second line shows your server and its load.
Alpha. Unofficial. Not made, endorsed or supported by Proton AG. Tested on one phone so far.
Install
- Download
LeanVPN-0.1.0.apkbelow on your phone (Android 10 or later, 64-bit) and open it. Allow installs from your browser if Android asks; if Play Protect warns about an unknown developer, choose Install anyway. - Open LeanVPN once and tap Add tile.
- Allow the VPN when Android asks.
- Sign in with the code on the page that opens (
account.protonvpn.com/appletv), then pull down Quick Settings.
The full guide covers everything else, including troubleshooting and battery settings.
What it does
- Picks the fastest server that isn't overloaded (real latency plus a load penalty), checks that it actually carries traffic, and moves you when it stalls, fills up (85%+) or goes into maintenance.
- Long-press the tile for Switch server and Sign out.
- Works with Android's Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN (a kill switch).
- 3.4 MB, two permissions (internet, network state), no analytics, ads or Google services. Works with Proton Free.
Not yet tested
Failover between servers on a phone, multi-day sessions, Wi-Fi ↔ mobile data while connected, Always-on at boot, battery use, other phone makers, Android 10–15 and paid plans. Bug reports are welcome; logs come from adb logcat -s LeanVPN.
