Magic Kettle 1.0.7
Magic Kettle 1.0.7: Steam no longer opens as black windows after you quit and reopen it, Kerbal Space Program
starts the game instead of its crash reporter, and a white window of a Chromium-based game is caught even when the
Mac is busy.
New in this version
- Steam opens normally after you quit it and open it again. Steam draws its windows through a built-in browser,
and Magic Kettle puts a small helper in front of it so the windows show up at all under Wine. When Steam was
closed, Magic Kettle asked it to quit with a command that also made Steam check its own files: Steam found the
helper, prepared its original file to put back, and installed it at the next start. Steam then opened as two
black windows. Magic Kettle now asks Steam to quit without that check, doesn't ask at all when Steam has already
quit on its own, and no longer mistakes such a repair for Steam's first download, which had also let the next
start check its files. If Steam is black for you right now, choose Quit Steam on its card and open it again:
Magic Kettle puts its helper back before the start. - Kerbal Space Program starts the game. For a game from a store Magic Kettle picks the program that starts it,
and for Kerbal Space Program it pickedUnityCrashHandler64.exe, Unity's crash reporter, because it was the
biggest program in the folder. Crash handlers now count as tools, never as the game, and a game that already got
one is given its real program (KSP_x64.exe) the next time the store's library is read. - A blank Chromium window isn't let through on a busy Mac. Games built on Chromium (NW.js, Electron, RPG Maker
MZ) sometimes open a window that stays white under Wine; Magic Kettle looks at the window a few times and, if it
never drew, starts the game again drawn another way. On a Mac busy enough to look fewer times than planned, the
window could count as working without enough looks, and the white window stayed. Now Magic Kettle keeps looking
until it has seen enough, for up to three times the usual check.
What to watch for
-
Steam after a quit and reopen: its windows should draw, not stay black. A Steam game whose list entry starts the
wrong program should get the right one after Steam's library is read again. -
The first launch of a Chromium-based game may take a little longer to be called working when the Mac is very
busy. Games that draw are not affected.

Magic Kettle 1.0.6
Magic Kettle 1.0.6: games on several CDs install to the end — the next disc goes in while the installer waits.
New in this version
- Installing a game from several disc images works. When a game's installer asks for its next CD ("Please
insert disc 2"), the install window now says so, quotes the installer's own message and offers Choose Disc
Image…. Pick that disc's image, then press Retry or OK in the installer's window, and the install goes on —
disc 3 and later the same way. Before, only the first image could be in the drive: the installer kept asking for
disc 2 and the install could never finish. - Change Disc… for installers that ask in their own window. Some installers draw their own "insert the next
disc" screen, which Magic Kettle can't read. While any install from a disc image runs, the install window has a
Change Disc… button for exactly that case. - The disc's label changes with the disc. Many installers check the label of the disc in the drive, not only
its files, to tell which CD is in. Wine kept the label of the first disc for as long as the installer ran, so even
a correctly swapped disc 2 was still "disc 1" to the installer. Magic Kettle now changes the disc from inside
Windows itself, the way Windows' own drive settings do, so the installer reads the new label at once.
What to watch for
- Every disc used during the install stays attached until the install window closes: an installer that started
from disc 1 may still be running from it. They are all ejected together at the end. - If the game itself checks for its CD later, the first disc is the one kept for it ("Keep the disc in after
installing"). A game that wants another disc to play asks for it, and Choose Disc Image… on that message
switches it, as before. - If the installer asks for the next disc and nothing happens after you choose its image, press Retry in the
installer's window: some installers look at the drive only when asked to.

Magic Kettle 1.0.5
Magic Kettle 1.0.5: every release now says what changed, on GitHub and in the update window.
New in this version
- Detailed release notes for every release. Each version's page on GitHub describes what changed for players
and what to watch for, and the window that offers an update shows the same text before you install it. Before,
a release had only a link to the list of commits. The notes of 1.0.2, 1.0.3 and 1.0.4 are filled in too. - No release without notes. The release job stops before building when a version has no notes, so a version
can't reach players without saying what it brings.
What to watch for
- Nothing changes in how games run in this version.

Magic Kettle 1.0.4
Magic Kettle 1.0.4: Magic Kettle now updates itself. Install this version by hand once; from now on new versions
come to you.
New in this version
- Magic Kettle checks for a new version every day and offers to install it, showing what changed. Install
Update downloads it, checks it and relaunches Magic Kettle in the new version; Skip This Version and Remind Me
Later leave things as they are. - "Check for Updates" checks the app too. The button in Settings › Components, and Check for Updates… in the
Magic Kettle menu, used to look only at Wine, DXVK and DXMT, so pressing it never brought a new Magic Kettle. It
now checks the app and its components together, and says when you already have the newest version. - Updates are signed. Each release is signed with Magic Kettle's own key in the release job, and the app installs
only an update that carries that signature. Updates come from this repository's Releases, like the downloads. - Updates skip the "can't verify" step. An update installed by Magic Kettle opens without the System Settings
› Privacy & Security step a downloaded zip needs.
What to watch for
- 1.0.3 and earlier can't update themselves: download this version from Releases once.
- "Update components automatically" in Settings › General applies to Wine, DXVK and DXMT only; the app's own daily
check is always on and asks before installing anything. - The app now loads its update library (Sparkle.framework) with library validation turned off, because releases are
signed without an Apple developer certificate.

Magic Kettle 1.0.3
Magic Kettle 1.0.3: double-clicking a game's .exe opens it in Magic Kettle right after installing, even on a Mac
where another app had .exe files.
New in this version
- Magic Kettle takes
.exeand.msifiles on its first launch. The first screen says to find a game and
double-click its.exe, but on a Mac that had Whisky, CrossOver or EscApp, Finder kept opening.exefiles with
that app: macOS keeps the app a person picked before, and Magic Kettle only asked to be the default. Now the first
launch makes Magic Kettle the default app for both, without a dialog, so the next double-click opens the game in
Magic Kettle. .msiinstallers are recognised on Macs with Whisky. Whisky declares.msias a type of its own
(com.microsoft.msi-installer); Magic Kettle now declares and takes that type too.
What to watch for
- This happens once. If you later pick another app for
.exefiles in Finder (Get Info › Open with › Change All),
Magic Kettle leaves that choice alone; Settings › General › "Open .exe files with a double-click" takes them back. - This version can't update itself: install 1.0.4 or later by hand once.

Magic Kettle 1.0.2
Magic Kettle 1.0.2: the app has its new name and icon. This is the oldest Magic Kettle release still published, so
below is also everything Magic Kettle does.
New in this version
- EscApp is now Magic Kettle. The app is "Magic Kettle.app", its menus, windows, site and repositories say
Magic Kettle, and its icon is a kettle shaped like a game controller, with sparkles. The library's header reads
"Magic Kettle — Just open it and play" in each of the app's nine languages (the tagline is dropped when the window
is too narrow for it). - A fresh start. Magic Kettle keeps its games, settings and downloads in
~/Library/Application Support/MagicKettle
and marks a game's folder with a.magickettlefile. It doesn't read EscApp's folder or.escappfiles: open each
game once more and Magic Kettle sets it up again, and remove EscApp's folder when you no longer need it. - The app shows its icon. The release is built with Xcode 26, which understands the Icon Composer icon; an
earlier build of 1.0.2 showed a blank icon and was withdrawn.
Everything Magic Kettle does
Games
- Double-click a game's
.exeand play. Magic Kettle reads the program, works out what it needs and picks how
to draw it on Metal: DXMT or DXVK for DirectX 10 and 11, WineD3D for DirectX 9 and older. If the first way fails,
the first launch tries the next one while a cover hides the game's window, then remembers what worked; later
launches start straight away. - DirectX 12 games run on Apple's D3DMetal, which you add from Apple's "Evaluation environment for Windows
games" in Settings › DirectX 12. Magic Kettle never ships or downloads it. - Steam and the Epic Games Store install with one button. Their games install, sign in and start through the
store as on Windows, and appear in the library with their covers. - Installers and disc images (ISO, BIN/CUE) work, including old games that ask for their CD.
- Unity, RPG Maker XP/VX/VX Ace, NW.js and Electron games. RPG Maker's Run Time Package and the Visual C++ and
.NET runtimes a game needs are installed from their publishers only when a game needs them. - Japanese games start with Japanese settings and fonts.
- Small and old games are made bigger smoothly, without changing the Mac's display, and fixed-size windows can be
stretched by their corner. Retina is used when the game says it supports it. - Settings known for particular games come from MagicKettle-Games and are fetched daily.
Your Mac
- One profile for every game, so saves and settings stay in one place (Settings › Saves).
- Nothing about you or your games is sent anywhere. Every download of something Magic Kettle runs is checked
against a pinned SHA-256. - Wine, DXVK and DXMT update themselves, daily, unless you turn off "Update components automatically" in
Settings › General. Magic Kettle runs games on its own build of Wine 11.20 from MagicKettle-Runtime. - Nine languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Simplified Chinese.
What to watch for
- Games added to EscApp aren't in Magic Kettle's library until they are opened again.
- Magic Kettle isn't notarized by Apple: the first time, open it from System Settings › Privacy & Security
(see Download below). - This version can't update itself: install 1.0.4 or later by hand once.
