New in 1.8.0: Check for updates. Open the ⋯ menu and choose Check for updates…. DiskScout asks GitHub for the number of the newest release and tells you whether there is a newer one, with a button that opens the download page. It never checks by itself, and it downloads and installs nothing.

Get it: download DiskScout-1.8.0.exe below and run it. New here? Read the user guide.

About the update check

  • Still no telemetry. That one request is the only thing DiskScout ever sends over the internet, and only when you press the button. GitHub sees your IP address, like any website you visit, and a request that says "DiskScout" and its version number. Nothing about your computer, your disk or your files is sent.
  • A test keeps it that way: the build fails if any other part of the program starts using the network.
  • To update: download the new exe, close DiskScout, and run the new one from the same folder, so your diskscout-data folder carries on. If you connected Claude, press Connect again from the new file. Details are in the user guide.
  • If you are on 1.7.1 or older, there is no button yet: this is the release to download by hand.

Also new: a README banner, and a Disclaimer section (the same text is in the user guide).

What it does

  • A treemap of your disk that fills in while it scans, with free space, the Recycle Bin and the space Windows hides ("unaccounted") shown so the map adds up to the drive.
  • A legend that filters (show only video, only archives, ...) and a filter box (>500MB type:video <30d).
  • Live: the folder you have open keeps itself up to date.
  • Duplicates by content, by file, by folder pair (with the proof), and zips compared with the folders they were unpacked into, byte for byte.
  • Careful deletes: only files it listed, still as scanned, the copy that stays compared byte for byte first, the Recycle Bin by default, and never the last copy without an explicit tick.
  • Optional Claude help (needs your own Claude Code): an in-window chat, and tools for Claude Desktop and Claude Code. Claude can never delete or run a command on its own: everything waits for your Approve.

Please know

  • Windows 10 and 11 only, and this is an early release. It has been tested on a small number of machines, so please open an issue when something is wrong or confusing.
  • The exe is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen will probably warn the first time: choose More info, then Run anyway. You can check the file against the SHA-256 below, or build it yourself from source (one command, no dependencies).
  • If you use Claude features, Claude is shown file and folder names, paths, sizes and dates (never file contents), under your own Claude account.
  • .rar, .7z and .tar archives are listed but cannot be compared with their folders yet.
  • Use it at your own risk. DiskScout is provided as is, without warranty, and it is not a backup. That includes anything done with Claude's or any other AI's help: AI can be wrong, and you approve what is removed. See the disclaimer.
