THPS 2X Recompiled v0.9.3.1

Choose a tag to compare

@almost-drowned-rat almost-drowned-rat released this 29 Oct 20:42

A small diagnostics release for frame-rate reports (Steam Deck, issue #1): the log now names the version and the
system it runs on, and the FPS counter's log lines show the GPU time per frame. No gameplay changes.
Full list: CHANGELOG.md.
Download, update and Proton / Wine notes: README.

Changes

  • data\thps2x.log starts with the version and the system: the release and its source commits, then Windows
    with its build, or Wine / Proton with the Linux version under it, and whether it runs on a Steam Deck in Game Mode
    (Gamescope) or Desktop Mode.
  • With the FPS counter on, the 5-second log lines also show the GPU time per frame, and the time spent handing
    the picture to the display is split into its two steps (present ... (acquire ...)). Before, the GPU time needed
    the RECOMP_FRAME_TIME=1 launch option.

Notes

  • Requirements: Vulkan 1.3 with VK_KHR_push_descriptor (see the README).
  • Known: Linux via Proton / Wine is best effort.
  • If you report a problem, please attach data\thps2x.log from the run where it happened.

THPS 2X Recompiled v0.9.3

Choose a tag to compare

@almost-drowned-rat almost-drowned-rat released this 29 Oct 12:25

Download removed: this release is superseded by v0.9.3.1 - the log now names the version and the system it runs on, and the FPS counter's log lines show the GPU time per frame (for frame-rate reports, e.g. on the Steam Deck). Only the newest release keeps its download; see CHANGELOG.md.

A small compatibility release: a clear message instead of a black screen when the graphics card lacks a
Vulkan feature the game needs, AMD Polaris (RX 400 / RX 500) on Windows via a fallback, and the log is written
when the game is started directly. No gameplay changes.
Full list: CHANGELOG.md.
Download, update and Proton / Wine notes: README.

Fixes

  • Graphics card check at start: when the GPU or its driver lacks a Vulkan feature the renderer needs, the game
    stops with a clear message naming the card, the driver's Vulkan version and exactly what is missing (the same text
    goes to data\thps2x.log). Before, it ran on with a black or missing window.
  • AMD Polaris (RX 400 / RX 500, e.g. RX 580) on Windows is now supported through a fallback for drivers without
    VK_EXT_vertex_input_dynamic_state. I tested it with the fallback forced, not yet on a real RX 580 -
    feedback welcome.
  • The log is written when THPS2X.exe is started directly (without the launcher); before, data\thps2x.log
    stayed empty.

Notes

  • Requirements: Vulkan 1.3 with VK_KHR_push_descriptor (see the README).
  • Known: Linux via Proton / Wine is best effort.
  • The 0xC0000035 ... err=183 lines in the log are harmless (the game creates folders that already exist).

THPS 2X Recompiled v0.9.2

@almost-drowned-rat almost-drowned-rat released this 28 Oct 19:48

Download removed: this release is superseded by v0.9.3 - important fixes (a clear message instead of a black screen when the GPU lacks a needed Vulkan feature, a fallback for GPUs without vertex-input dynamic state such as AMD Polaris on Windows, the log on a direct start). Only the newest release keeps its download; see CHANGELOG.md.

New gameplay options, the button cheats as a list, diagnostics for frame-rate reports, and fixes for
Proton / Wine (Steam Deck) players. Tested on Windows 11 and on Arch Linux with Steam / Proton, with and without
Gamescope.
Full list: CHANGELOG.md.

New

  • Options -> GENERAL OPTIONS is now one list: the game's own Trick tips, Score display, Quick chat and Motion
    blur, plus Playstyle XBOX / PS2 (spins on Black / White - LB / RB on a modern pad - while nollie and switch
    stay on the triggers), 180 spin taps ON / OFF and Big drop ORIGINAL / NO BAIL / OFF. Every one defaults
    to the original game; press Y to put the selected line back to its default.
  • Options -> RECOMP OPTIONS -> BUTTON CHEATS: 23 of the game's button cheats as a list - each line says what
    it does, ON / OFF, any combination, Y switches the selected one off. No more typing codes with LT held.
  • Diagnostics: with the FPS counter on (RECOMP OPTIONS -> FRAME RATE) or the launch option
    RECOMP_FPS_LOG=1 %command%, data\thps2x.log gets an [fps] line every 5 seconds (how a frame's time splits
    into the game, its wait for the display, graphics translation, GPU and presenting) and a [hitch] line for every
    frame over 50 ms naming its cause. Please attach that log to frame-rate or stutter reports.

Fixes

  • Saves under Proton / Wine: every save after the first said "the memory unit was removed during use", and
    saves and replays could not be deleted. Fixed (tested with Wine 9.0).
  • Start under Proton / Wine: the game's memory window is checked as a whole; if nothing fits, the game stops
    with a message and a reason in the log instead of crashing after the intro.
  • A 3-second busy wait after a save is loaded: the game held its screen there by polling the clock, one CPU
    core fully loaded (on the Steam Deck tens of millions of calls between the intro and Select Player). It now
    sleeps through those 3 seconds.

Notes

  • Overwriting a save from Options -> Load/Save -> Save Game refuses an existing name - that is the original game's
    behaviour (the same on an emulator). Save from the end-of-run menu, or pick a new name.
  • The recomp's FPS counter counts the game's own frames; the Steam overlay measures after Gamescope, so the two can differ.
    The intro and the menus run at 30 fps in the original game; levels at 60.

THPS 2X Recompiled v0.9.1.1

@almost-drowned-rat almost-drowned-rat released this 27 Oct 22:55

Download removed: this release is superseded by v0.9.2 (new gameplay options, the button cheats as a list, diagnostics for frame-rate reports, Proton / Wine save fixes). Only the newest release keeps its download; see CHANGELOG.md.

Linux via Proton / Wine and an offline first start. The game itself is unchanged from v0.9.0.
Tested on Arch Linux with Proton 11.0-2 and Wine 11.20: install, first start and the game work.
Full list: CHANGELOG.md.

Fixes

  • Crash at the title screen under Proton / Wine: the game's memory window is now placed where all of it is
    free; under Wine two of its parts had landed on memory Wine already uses. Windows is unchanged.
  • "No internet" while downloading the compiler (Proton / Wine): no more curl.exe - the download runs
    in-process (WinHTTP). No "is the network up" check any more; a failed download names the real reason (name
    lookup, connection, secure connection or the server's HTTP answer) and offers Retry.
  • Unpacking the compiler failed (it expected tar.exe): the compiler zip is unpacked in-process by the port's
    own zip reader (every file checked by its CRC-32).

@almost-drowned-rat almost-drowned-rat released this 27 Oct 20:26

The first public release: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2X (Xbox, USA) as a native Windows port with a Vulkan
renderer. It contains no game data, no game code and no keys - you need your own copy of the USA disc.
