@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Oct 08:37

Thirteenth beta of Snapkit, a fast screenshot tool for macOS and Windows.

What's new since beta.12

  • Capture Text (OCR). Select an area and press X (or the scan-eye button) to read its text. The text panel shows it so you can check, edit or join it into one line before copying. Capture Text (⌥⇧T, Windows: Alt+Shift+T, also in the menu bar) goes straight to reading. Set "Copy text" to "Copy right away" in Settings to skip the panel.
  • Reads English and Vietnamese, offline and private: Apple's Vision on macOS (Vietnamese needs macOS 14 or newer), Windows' own OCR on Windows. Windows has no Vietnamese OCR, so with "Read Vietnamese" on, Snapkit uses Tesseract for it; it downloads about 7 MB of language data the first time.
  • Text from older captures: the floating preview and History can read text too.

The first text read on a Mac can take up to a minute while macOS prepares its text models; after that it takes well under a second.

Beta users get a notification about this release; download and install it over the old one.

Shortcuts

⌥⇧Z (Windows: Alt+Shift+Z) capture an area · ⌥⇧X last area · ⌥⇧T text (OCR) · ⌘⇧9 full screen · ⌘⇧1 history · ⌘⇧2 settings (Windows: Ctrl instead of ⌘). All changeable in Settings → Shortcuts.

Install

macOS (Apple Silicon only): download Snapkit-0.2.0-beta.13-mac-arm64.dmg, open it and drag Snapkit to Applications.
Snapkit isn't signed with an Apple Developer ID yet, so macOS blocks the first launch:
open Snapkit once, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
(Or in Terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Snapkit.app.)
Then allow Screen Recording when asked, and quit and reopen Snapkit. After updating, macOS may ask for Screen Recording again.

Windows (x64): run Snapkit-0.2.0-beta.13-win-x64-setup.exe. SmartScreen warns about an unknown publisher: click More info → Run anyway.
If something misbehaves, the log is at %APPDATA%\Snapkit\logs\main.log; please attach it to a bug report.

Ninth beta of Snapkit, a fast screenshot tool for macOS and Windows.

What's new since beta.8

  • Full-screen captures get the background when "Background on by default" is on: in the copy, the floating preview and history (Edit can still change it).
  • Numbered steps: set the badge outline (color, width) and shadow in Settings → Tools.
  • Dim color: pick the color capture mode dims the screen with (Settings → Appearance; black by default).
  • History: "Recording" switch in Settings → General, matching the History window and the menu-bar menu.
  • Windows: the History window has a close button, and dropdown lists in Settings are readable in the dark themes.
  • Clearer wording: shorter descriptions throughout Settings, tooltips and dialogs.

Beta users get a notification about this release; download and install it over the old one.

Shortcuts

⌥⇧Z (Windows: Alt+Shift+Z) capture an area · ⌘⇧9 full screen · ⌘⇧1 history · ⌘⇧2 settings (Windows: Ctrl instead of ⌘). All changeable in Settings → Shortcuts.

Twelfth beta of Snapkit, a fast screenshot tool for macOS and Windows.

What's new since beta.11

  • Compress images. Smaller PNGs when you copy or save: Standard keeps the size and reduces colors (text stays sharp, often 60–80% smaller); Smallest also brings Retina / HiDPI captures back to 1×. Pasting keeps the savings in browsers, Slack, Discord, Notion and Office. Turn it on in Settings → General → After a capture; the editor has a Compress switch with the file size.
  • Capture last area (⌥⇧X, Windows: Alt+Shift+X). Reopens the area you last copied or saved, or the whole screen after a full-screen capture. Turn on "Copy last area right away" to skip capture mode.
  • Ruler tool (M). Measures in image pixels; part of the image when you copy or save. Off by default: turn it on in Settings → Toolbar.
  • macOS: Snapkit shows in the Dock while Settings is open, and goes back to the menu bar when you close it.
  • macOS: frosted glass app icon.
  • Windows: the floating preview stays on top even when Windows drops its on-top flag.

Beta users get a notification about this release; download and install it over the old one.

Shortcuts

⌥⇧Z (Windows: Alt+Shift+Z) capture an area · ⌥⇧X last area · ⌘⇧9 full screen · ⌘⇧1 history · ⌘⇧2 settings (Windows: Ctrl instead of ⌘). All changeable in Settings → Shortcuts.

Eleventh beta of Snapkit, a fast screenshot tool for macOS and Windows.

What's new since beta.10

  • Windows: capture mode appears instantly. The dim no longer zooms in from the middle of the screen, briefly showing the screen's edges. Windows animates a window every time it appears, so Snapkit now keeps its capture window open, invisible and click-through between captures, and just makes it visible when you press the shortcut.
  • Windows: the floating preview stays on top more reliably after a copy.

Tenth beta of Snapkit, a fast screenshot tool for macOS and Windows.

What's new since beta.9

  • Windows: no white flash when capture mode opens. Windows animated the capture window each time it appeared (fading in while growing), which briefly uncovered the screen's edges. Snapkit now turns that animation off for its capture windows, and shows the dim only once it's drawn.
  • Dim amount moves in 1% steps (was 5%).
  • The website updates itself after each release, so its download buttons always point to the newest version.

Beta users get a notification about this release; download and install it over the old one.

Eighth beta of Snapkit, a fast screenshot tool for macOS and Windows. A small Windows fix.

What's new since beta.7

  • Windows: the app is called "Snapkit" everywhere. Startup apps, Task Manager and Installed apps showed Snapkit's long description ("Minimal, fully customizable screenshot tool…") as its name and "Son" as its publisher. Both are now simply Snapkit.

Beta users get a notification about this release; download and install it over the old one.

Seventh beta of Snapkit, a fast screenshot tool for macOS and Windows.

What's new since beta.6

  • New home on GitHub: Snapkit now lives at github.com/an-ordinary-melody/snapkit (the GitHub account was renamed). This beta checks for updates there. Older betas still find updates through GitHub's redirect from the old address, but please install this one so update checks go straight to the new home.

Beta users get a notification about this release; download and install it over the old one.

Sixth beta of Snapkit, a fast screenshot tool for macOS and Windows. A Windows fix.

What's new since beta.5

  • Windows: the floating preview stays on top after an area capture. With the floating preview on, the preview was created after copying but ended up behind the window you went back to (it only showed after minimizing something). It now stays on top, as it already did after a full-screen capture.
  • Behind the scenes: a Windows test now asks Windows itself whether the preview is on top of the app you return to, at 100% and 150% display scaling.

Fifth beta of Snapkit, a fast screenshot tool for macOS and Windows.

What's new since beta.4

  • New look: Snapkit has its own icon now, the snapping hand. On macOS 26 and later the app icon is a real Liquid Glass icon (light, dark and tinted looks); older macOS and Windows get the same icon flat. The menu-bar icon (Mac) and tray icon (Windows) use it too.
  • Quick area capture (Settings → General → After a capture, off by default): the area you draw is copied the moment you let go, with no adjusting or drawing step.
  • Editor zoom, continued:
    • On a Mac, scrolling up (⌘ + scroll) now zooms in, like on Windows; a trackpad pinch works as before.
    • Hold Space and drag to move around a zoomed-in image, like Photoshop's hand tool.
    • Fast scrolling or pinching zooms the full amount (quick steps used to be partly lost).
  • Scrollbars are thin and rounded with no background strip, in the theme's colors (the settings window had a white strip in the dark theme).

Fourth beta of Snapkit, a fast screenshot tool for macOS and Windows.

What's new since beta.3

  • Zoom in the background editor: Ctrl + scroll zooms the preview around the mouse pointer (on a Mac also ⌘ + scroll or a trackpad pinch), and you can scroll around when zoomed in. Ctrl + 0 (⌘0) fits it back to the window; Ctrl + / Ctrl − zoom in steps, and the % badge in the corner also fits. The image and your drawings are redrawn sharp at every zoom level.
  • Windows: text is 26 px by default (was 32). macOS stays at 20 px. Changeable in Settings → Tools.

Beta users get a notification about this release; download and install it over the old one.
