Dispatcharr TV 0.3.0-nightly-20261030

Pre-release

@github-actions github-actions released this 30 Oct 09:29
e995a08

Automatic build of main at e995a08. It installs beside Dispatcharr TV as a separate app, "Dispatcharr TV Nightly", with its own launcher tile and its own sign-in — your regular Dispatcharr TV install is untouched.

This build has not been tested on a television. It passed the same automated checks a release does — the ARM cross-build, the packaging gates, and the firmware loader compatibility check — but nobody has watched it play. Keep the stable app installed.

Reporting problems

Open an issue and include the version string 0.3.0-nightly-20261030. If error reporting is enabled, reports from this build go to the project's development tracker, kept apart from reports the stable app sends.

Installing

With Homebrew Channel: under Settings, choose Add repository and enter https://andrewmagness.github.io/webos-dispatcharr/nightly/repo.json, then install "Dispatcharr TV Nightly" from the list. Later nightlies appear there as updates. The guide has the details.

By hand: download dispatcharrtv-v0.3.0-nightly-20261030.ipk below and install it with dev-manager-desktop — no rooted television is needed. A package installed this way does not update itself; the newest nightly is always linked from latest.json.

v0.2.0 — the guide keeps your channel playing

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Oct 03:47

Pressing BACK while you watch no longer stops the channel: it keeps playing in a corner of the guide while you look at what else is on.

What's new

  • The channel keeps playing in the guide's corner. BACK while watching opens the guide with the channel still playing, with sound, in its top-right corner and the guide's cursor on that channel. OK on it goes back to full screen without re-tuning; OK on any other programme changes to that channel; BACK on the guide stops it. STOP still leaves the channel outright.

Fixed

  • An HTTPS server whose certificate an older television does not recognise. If your Dispatcharr server is behind a reverse proxy with a current Let's Encrypt certificate and your television's own certificate store is too old to know its issuer, the app now checks the certificate against the Let's Encrypt roots it carries, still verifying the chain, dates and name, instead of failing to connect.
  • Addresses without a port number. A channel logo, or a redirect from your server, whose address names no port was dialled on the wrong port; it now uses the standard one (80 for http, 443 for https).

Compatibility

  • Plays video, verified by watching it — a 2021 LG set. An LG OLED C1 (OLED65C1PUB) on webOS 6.5.3 is the development set: the guide's corner picture and the rest of this release were watched there against a real Dispatcharr server.
  • Played video in v0.1.0, verified by watching it — a 2018 LG set. An LG OLED B8 (OLED55B8PUA) on webOS 4.4.3 played live TV with v0.1.0. This release has not been run on it, and webOS 4 places the corner picture through a different part of the television's software than the C1 does.
  • Starts, and nothing further is known — every other firmware from webOS 3.4.0 up. The loader resolves this binary's libraries and symbols against all eleven firmware images webosbrew has at 3.4.0 or newer. That grades startup and says nothing about whether video plays; the matrix is in the technical audit.
  • Does not start — webOS 2 and older. Symbols the app needs are missing there, so the process is killed before anything appears.

If your set is in the middle two groups, tell us what happened. It working is as useful a report as it failing.

Known issues

  • MPEG-2 video channels do not play. The television's buffer-feed pipeline does not accept MPEG-2 video; the app says so and suggests setting an H.264 stream profile for that channel in Dispatcharr. Unchanged from v0.1.0.
  • Some televisions cannot decode DTS audio. The development C1 refuses a DTS stream, as many 2020-and-later LG sets do; such a channel needs an AC-3 or AAC audio profile in Dispatcharr. Unchanged from v0.1.0.
  • Long viewing sessions use more memory over time. Memory grew by about 7.5 MB an hour during a two-hour session on the development set; the cause has not been measured yet, and this release does not change it.

Help test this release

If you have an LG set on webOS 4 or 5, press BACK while watching a channel. The guide's corner picture has only been watched on webOS 6; tell us whether the picture lands in the top-right corner, keeps its sound, and goes back to full screen with OK. Open an issue with your model and webOS version. It working is as useful a report as it failing.

Installing

Download com.magness.dispatcharrtv_0.2.0_arm.ipk and install it with the Homebrew Channel or dev-manager-desktop. You do not need a rooted TV.

Installing and checking a download covers the other assets, how to check the hash on each platform, and the Developer Mode expiry that uninstalls your apps. This package bundles FFmpeg under LGPL-2.1-or-later and its complete corresponding source is attached to this release. Exactly what was built, verified and shipped is in the technical audit for v0.2.0.

Pre-release

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Oct 03:23

Release candidate 0.2.0-rc.1 of Dispatcharr TV 0.2.0, built from ca05023. If nothing turns up, the same source ships as 0.2.0.

It installs as Dispatcharr TV itself, not as a separate app. It replaces the regular Dispatcharr TV on your television, the same way an update does; Dispatcharr TV Nightly and other separate installs are left alone. It is not offered in the Homebrew Channel, and because it carries the package version 0.2.0, the Channel will not offer the final 0.2.0 as an update over it either: reinstall the final release by hand once it is out.

v0.1.0 — first release: live TV from your Dispatcharr server

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Oct 04:28

The first release of Dispatcharr TV, a native live-TV app for LG webOS televisions that plays the channels of your own Dispatcharr server on the television's hardware video decoder.

What's new

  • Setup finds your server. It looks for a Dispatcharr server on your home network and offers what it finds; you can also type the address. You sign in once with your Dispatcharr username and password; the password is not stored.
  • A programme guide. Every channel your server carries, with its logo and what is on now and next, grouped the way your server groups them, and a favourites list of your own. OK on a channel tunes it.
  • Live TV on the hardware decoder. H.264 and HEVC video, with AAC, AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS and MP2/MP3 audio, played by the television itself rather than in software.
  • Channel changing the way a remote does it. CH▲/CH▼, number entry, a now/next banner with what is on next, UP/DOWN to look through the other channels in the banner without leaving the one playing (OK changes to it), and hold-OK to go back to the channel you were watching before.
  • It picks up where you left off. The app starts on the last channel you watched (switch it off on the Server page), and coming back from another app tunes the channel again.
  • It recovers on its own. A stream that drops or freezes is tuned again automatically, and a busy server is retried. If a channel cannot play, the screen says why and offers Try again.
  • Nothing is sent to us. The app talks only to your Dispatcharr server. It has no crash reporting and no analytics; see the privacy policy.

Compatibility

  • Plays video, verified by watching it — 2021 and 2018 LG sets. An LG OLED C1 (OLED65C1PUB) on webOS 6.5.3 is the development set: every feature in this release was watched there against a real Dispatcharr server, including channel changes, a dropped stream reconnecting and an app switch. An LG OLED B8 (OLED55B8PUA) on webOS 4.4.3 was installed by the owner, who reported that Setup found the server and the guide and live playback work well.

If your set is in the middle group, tell us what happened. It working is as useful a report as it failing.

Known issues

  • MPEG-2 video channels do not play. The television's buffer-feed pipeline does not accept MPEG-2 video; the app says so and suggests setting an H.264 stream profile for that channel in Dispatcharr.
  • Some televisions cannot decode DTS audio. The development C1 refuses a DTS stream, as many 2020-and-later LG sets do; such a channel needs an AC-3 or AAC audio profile in Dispatcharr.
  • Rarely, a channel does not start its picture on the first try. Once in six launches during release testing the picture did not appear after tuning; it did not recur. Changing channel and back tunes it afresh.
  • Long viewing sessions use more memory over time. Memory grew by about 7.5 MB an hour during a two-hour session on the development set; the cause has not been measured yet.

Help test this release

If you have an LG set on webOS 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11, try tuning a few channels. Nobody has watched video on those generations with this app. Open an issue with your model and webOS version. It working is as useful a report as it failing.
