v0.3.9: Sleep note fits on single-page screens

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Oct 14:34

Fixed

  • The sleep-mode banner at the bottom of single-page dashboards no longer cuts off the next update time on narrow screens such as the Kobo Aura (#2). v0.3.8 only fixed the banner shown in place of the page tabs. Both banners now shrink the font a little, then show just the next update time, and as a last resort shorten the words while keeping the time (for example "Prossimo aggi… 22:56").

Update from the setup tool with Update Kobo.

v0.3.8: Sleep note fits narrow screens

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Oct 13:35

Fixed

  • The sleep-mode banner no longer cuts off the next update time on narrow screens such as the Kobo Aura and Glo (#2). It uses a slightly smaller font when the full line doesn't fit; if it still doesn't fit, it shows just the next update time (for example "Prossimo aggiornamento 22:56").

Update from the setup tool with Update Kobo.

v0.3.7: Wi-Fi icon while asleep

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Oct 11:33
  • Wi-Fi icon while asleep: the sleep screen is drawn just before Wi-Fi is switched off, so it kept showing Wi-Fi as connected for the whole sleep. It now shows Wi-Fi as off, and so does the header while the dashboard has Wi-Fi switched off (for example right after waking with the power button) (#2).
  • README: the Kobo Glo and Kobo Aura are now listed as tested, thanks to @dikkechill (#1) and @digt100 (#2).

v0.3.6: Wi-Fi address after sleep, local log times

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Oct 09:45

More Wi-Fi fixes for older Kobos after sleep, reported on a Kobo Aura (#2).

Wi-Fi after sleep

  • Getting an address after waking. On some Kobos, Wi-Fi came back and joined the network but never got an IP address, so the dashboard stayed offline. If no address arrives within a few seconds, the dashboard now asks the Kobo's network service to reconnect, and if that doesn't help either, requests an address directly. Each step is written to the log.
  • Kobos that already got an address right away work exactly as before.

Log

  • Times in dashboard.log are in local time, with the offset (e.g. +01:00). Before, they were in UTC, which looked an hour off next to the first line of the log.

Upgrading

Run the setup tool for your computer and click Update Kobo. Your settings are kept.

v0.3.5: Wi-Fi reconnect after sleep

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 29 Oct 08:06

Fixes Wi-Fi not reconnecting after sleep, reported on a Kobo Aura (#2), and adds tests for the fixes in v0.3.2 to v0.3.4.

Wi-Fi after sleep

  • Broadcom Wi-Fi chips (older Kobos) are switched on and off the way the Kobo's own software does it. Before, Wi-Fi could come back after waking without joining any network.
  • After loading the Wi-Fi driver, the dashboard waits a moment before using it, and restarts the Wi-Fi network service if it was left running from before sleep.
  • If joining a network takes more than 10 seconds, it tries once more. If it still fails, the log says how far it got and how many networks were in range.

Header

  • On the Kobo Glo, a typical date now fits next to "Sin conexión" (Spanish, offline) without being shortened. The clock gets a little smaller when space is tight.

Tests

  • New automated tests check that the fixes for the oldest Kobos (touch, light, Wi-Fi, header) don't change anything on newer models.

These models are untested by us. If you have one, please report back in #2 with your dashboard.log.

Upgrading

Run the setup tool for your computer and click Update Kobo. Your settings are kept.

v0.3.4: Header fits narrow screens

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Oct 22:25

A layout fix for small screens, reported on a Kobo Glo (#1).

Header

  • Nothing overlaps on narrow screens. With the light button added in v0.3.3, the header on the Kobo Glo's 758 px wide screen ran out of room: the weekday ran into the battery icon and the date into the connection status. On narrow screens the header now uses slightly smaller buttons and a smaller clock, shows the battery icon without the percentage, and shows "Live" without the update time, as far as needed. A date that still doesn't fit is shortened.
  • Larger Kobos keep the full layout, and the header is the same height everywhere.

Upgrading

Run the setup tool for your computer and click Update Kobo. Your settings are kept.

v0.3.3: Kobo Glo touch, Wi-Fi and light fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Oct 14:19

Fixes for the oldest Kobo models, reported on a Kobo Glo (#1).

Touch

  • Taps land where you touch on the Kobo Glo and other models with a zForce touch panel (Touch, Mini, Aura, Aura HD...). Before, every tap was shifted towards the right edge, so Refresh closed the dashboard and the first page tab couldn't be selected.

Wi-Fi

  • No more freeze on exit when Wi-Fi is off. On exit, the dashboard tried to switch Wi-Fi back on even if it had been off before it started, which froze the Glo. Wi-Fi is now only switched back on if the dashboard itself switched it off for sleep mode.
  • The log is saved to disk before exiting, so it isn't lost if the Kobo has to be restarted.
  • The Wi-Fi icon and log show the real state on models whose Wi-Fi interface isn't called wlan0, such as the Glo.

Frontlight

  • The light button works on older Kobos with a light (Glo, Aura, Aura HD, Glo HD, Aura H2O...). They control the light differently from newer models, so the dashboard reported no light at all.

These models are still untested by us. If you have one, please report back in #1 with your dashboard.log.

Upgrading

Run the setup tool for your computer and click Update Kobo. Your settings are kept.

v0.3.2: Screen updates on the oldest Kobos

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Oct 00:04

Adds screen support for the oldest Kobo models, reported on a Kobo Glo (#1).

Display

  • Kobo Touch, Glo, Mini, Aura, Aura HD and Glo HD. On these models the dashboard started and talked to Home Assistant, but the screen never changed. Their older display driver expects a slightly different screen-update command, and the dashboard now sends it.
  • Other models are unaffected: the command they already used is still tried first.

These models are untested so far. If you have one, please try it and report back in #1 with your dashboard.log.

Upgrading

Run the setup tool for your computer and click Update Kobo. Your settings are kept.

v0.3.1: Power button, light and USB fixes

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 22 Oct 18:52

Fixes for the power button, the frontlight, USB and charging, found while testing sleep mode on a Kobo Clara Colour.

Power button

  • The power button works inside the dashboard. With sleep mode on, it puts the dashboard to sleep and wakes it again. While charging, or with sleep mode off, it switches the light off and on.
    • Before, the reading app kept the button to itself, so the dashboard never saw a press.
  • No more sleep right after you exit. Presses made while the dashboard was open were saved by the reading app and replayed when you exited, so the Kobo went to sleep. They are now thrown away when the dashboard closes.
  • Changing your mind before sleep. A tap or a power-button press while the sleep screen is coming up cancels sleep.

Frontlight

  • The light button shows the light's real state. On the Clara Colour the brightness setting reads back the last value written, not what the light is doing.
  • If the dashboard never changed the light, it leaves the light alone when you exit.

USB and charging

  • Connecting to a computer returns to the reader, so the Kobo can offer to connect. A plain charger keeps the dashboard open.
  • Charging icon. The battery icon shows a charging bolt as soon as a cable goes in, and the bolt is visible at any charge level.
  • Plug detection works on the Clara Colour, which reports a charger and a computer differently from other Kobos.

Sleep mode

  • After waking, the dashboard is drawn a moment later. The display controller isn't ready right away, and the first update could be lost.
  • The Wi-Fi script no longer gets stuck for a minute after an interrupted run.

Upgrading

Run the setup tool for your computer and click Update Kobo. Your settings are kept.

v0.3.0: Battery life

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 14:59

This release is about battery life.

What's new

  • Live updates. The dashboard subscribes to its own entities over Home Assistant's WebSocket API instead of downloading every entity on a timer. If the connection drops, it falls back to polling every 60 seconds (previously 20).
  • Fewer screen updates. While you're not using the Kobo, it redraws at most once a minute. For 30 seconds after a tap, changes still appear right away. A full-screen refresh only happens after the screen actually changed.
  • Sleep mode (optional). After a period without taps, the Kobo turns Wi-Fi off and goes into deep sleep. It wakes on a timer to refresh the data, or when you press the power button. A note shows when the next update is due. It never sleeps while charging.
    • To turn it on, use the setup tool's Connect step ("Go to sleep after" and "Update while asleep every"). It is off by default.
  • Battery log. Every 10 minutes, .kobo-ha/dashboard.log records the charge level and current draw, so you can compare settings.

Fixes

  • After exiting the dashboard, the frontlight could end up off in Nickel. This happened on models whose brightness file reads back 0, such as the Clara Colour.
  • Kaleido panels: the dashboard no longer flashes the full screen when nothing on it changed.

Upgrading

Run the setup tool from the package for your computer and click Update Kobo. Your settings are kept. Sleep mode adds a new file, wifi.sh, which the setup tool installs for you.

Sleep mode has been tested on a Kobo Clara Colour. Other models should work the same way, but reports are welcome. If anything goes wrong, holding the power button for about 15 seconds restarts the Kobo, and dashboard.log shows each step.
