Windows XT

Download WINXT.ZIP

For the original Tandy 1000 EX/HX with normal 640 KB and Windows 3.0 real mode.
Extract the ZIP: its root contains SETUP.EXE, README.TXT and the expanded WINXT folder.

  • Full desktop: from the extracted root in DOS run SETUP UPDATE C:\WINDOWS, or SETUP FRESH A:\ for a new Windows installation. Use C:\STARTXT afterward. Full installation.
  • Drivers only: use ordinary Windows Setup with that same WINXT folder. From the folder in DOS run DISPLAY; choose Display / Other and enter its full path at the driver-disk prompts. Select HPXY, complete changes, then use DISPWIN from that folder for every launch. The custom SETUP.EXE is optional for this route. Driver installation.

The driver folder includes fonts, grabber, startup artwork and launch guards. You supply DOS and Windows itself. The full installer requires DOS 3.3+; the installed-Windows driver route supports DOS 3.20+. No Python or individual driver-support collection is needed.

Unified PAN: one application

Download PAN.ZIP for an existing supported display installation. The Windows XT, CGA, PCjr and ColorPlus packets already include it. PAN detects the installed driver and selects one appropriate backend automatically. No helper selection, manual copying or additional startup ritual is needed.

Run PAN /SETTINGS or press Ctrl+Alt+S. The shared dialog adapts to 160x100 and 320x200 views, shows the detected capabilities and retains unfinished edits when reopened. Apply saves; Cancel discards edits. Ctrl+Alt+arrows move, Ctrl+Alt+Home returns home and Ctrl+Alt+End brings the active window into view. Queued commands are applied after busy drawing; the input hook never draws. Tandy HPXY retains its Software/Hardware choice; supported fixed displays use the window workspace.

PCjr and ColorPlus now pan horizontally and vertically across a 640x400 desktop through their existing 320x200, sixteen-color screen. Their software shadow uses 128,000 bytes, 64,000 more than the preceding vertical-only profile. Native sessions use normal 640 KB and real-mode Windows, without EMS/XMS. Illustrated guide, installation and limits.

Native checks cover six application backend families, normal and standalone installation, compact settings, busy drawing input and clean DOS exits. Each new PCjr/ColorPlus driver passed 704,000 pixel comparisons with zero errors. Independent review and post-merge CI passed. These are emulator results, not physical-machine qualification. Evidence and measured costs.

HPXY bitmap speedup

The Tandy EX/HX HPXY driver now imports 4bpp bitmaps about 12% faster and exports them 9–11% faster in the measured native batches. One matched Solitaire startup improved from 37.898 to 37.458 seconds; that single pair does not establish a repeated startup speedup. Drawing, cursor and panning behavior retain the existing presentation path. The driver adds 240 file bytes and used 256 more bytes of free heap in the matched observation.

Native checks cover 61 bitmap cases, 18 timing batches, 41 raster frames, full installation, and ordinary Windows Setup followed by the documented DISPLAY helper replacement. Independent review and CI passed. These are emulator measurements; physical-machine timing remains unmeasured. Qualification and exact-source evidence. Existing installations should answer Y if DISPLAY offers to refresh the HPXY driver after Windows Setup.

HPXY panning update

Larger incremental hardware pans now use the normal HPXY driver and installation path. The tested X16/Y8 move takes 165 ms total versus about 1.2 seconds in the configured Windows emulator, with 1,472 additional allocated bytes. Physical EX timing and visible blackout duration remain unmeasured. Existing 8/4 controls remain unchanged. If DISPLAY offers to refresh an older HPXY driver after Windows Setup, answer Y to install this packet's update.

Fresh CGA Windows 3.0 Setup

The normal CGA.ZIP includes native DOS FRESH. Extract the complete kit with folders preserved into, for example, C:\CGAKIT. Keep the unchanged original English retail Windows 3.0 media in a separate directory, C:\W30SRC. From C:\CGAKIT, run FRESH C:\W30SRC: the argument is the Windows media directory. The launcher independently finds the driver beside itself and prints Display driver path: C:\CGAKIT\FRESH640. In original Setup choose Display / Other, enter C:\CGAKIT\FRESH640, select Windows XT IBM CGA 640x200 mono, and accept the hardware list with No Changes. For later Windows XT CGA fresh Setup disk requests, enter C:\CGAKIT\FRESH640; for Microsoft Windows 3.0 disk requests, enter C:\W30SRC. Replace any prefilled path from the other disk. With original floppies, use FRESH A:\ and supply the requested original Windows disks in A:\; the driver path remains C:\CGAKIT\FRESH640. Choose a new Windows destination such as C:\WINDOWS, finish Setup, and start Windows there with WIN /R. The project's driver, matching XTC fonts, private grabber and startup assets are used during graphical Setup. Other CGA modes remain available afterward through the existing native installer.

Original Setup completed, a separate ordinary WIN /R reached Program Manager, and normal Exit Windows returned to DOS on an emulated 4.77 MHz 8088 IBM XT with 640 KB and RGBI CGA. All seven installed display-support files and all 282 original source-media files were verified. Independent review, 32 production-gate checks and PR CI passed. The Tandy core files and existing CGA drivers/helpers are unchanged. No Python, modern-host conversion, manual INI edits or separate support-file gathering is required for consumers. Physical hardware, full floppy swapping and other fresh profiles remain unqualified. Fresh installation guide; native evidence and scope.

Compact CGA UI choices

Download CGA.ZIP now offers visible 320C and 640C choices alongside standard 320 and 640. In DOS, run SETUP C:\WINDOWS and choose the resolution and text/control size you prefer. Standard choices keep their existing fonts and controls. Compact choices fit more workspace using the real CGA100 3x5 UI, 4x6 fixed/OEM fonts and six-row controls; the text is smaller. Fonts, grabber and native switching/UNDO are included.

Both compact profiles passed native installer and Windows application checks on an emulated IBM XT with normal 640 KB, including Notepad Open/Save As, PAN settings and normal return to DOS. Independent source/packet and final integration reviews passed. Use the native DOS installer for these new profiles; physical hardware, real mouse input and their selection through ordinary Windows Setup remain unqualified. Installation and authentic comparison; exact-source qualification.

Hardware choices and short install guides. Windows 3.1 is unsupported. Hardware exclusions and model-specific limits are stated in those guides; saved emulator results do not establish physical-machine compatibility.

Developer source, build inputs and release records

The current packets use one PAN application with automatic driver selection and native helper installation. PCjr and ColorPlus include the new 640x400 two-axis drivers; ordinary and CGA display-driver bytes and all grabber/font/logo bytes remain unchanged. PAN source and native evidence. The catalog records the qualified producer and exact current asset identities. Historical tags and release assets are retained; superseded release pages remain drafts.

Tandy Beats Lab is the same current five-lane app in both music kits, with editable demos, pattern Save/Load and MML export. Choose by companion instruments. Beats guide. The shared installer retains the published Winamp bank feature.
