NakedAVP 1.3.0 Released!

@atsb atsb released this 17 Sep 10:43

The new version of NakedAVP is here! And it comes with a WHOLE load of stuff:

  1. OpenGL renderer has been lightly multithreaded - taken mostly from my work on Yamagi Quake II (GL4.6 multithreaded renderer). The OpenGL renderer for the initial Icculus port was pretty bad. It was hammering the CPU with thousands of vertex calculations per second. These have been offloaded to 4 asynchronous worker threads, which calculate these now. This gives the renderer and cpu a break and results in much better frame pacing and frame rates (I even tested it on an atrociously slow Haswell-era computer with 4x AA.. 60fps locked.

  2. FMVs and Music - Every-single FMV is back.. main menu, in-game, intro and outro, just as you remember them. From earlier work and issues raising this, I finally got everything ported to FFMPEG and running on every system.

  3. Options settings - You can set filtering, AA, if you want movies or not etc.. all from the menu screen. Including scaling of the main menu text for high resolutions.

  4. SDL3 Input fixes - Rewrote the entire input system into pure SDL3. No more hacks!

  5. Removed OpenAL - This was to reduce dependencies and also because there's two different kinds of OpenAL and this was confusing users. We now use a pure SDL3 Audio Stream for ALL audio, music, SFX etc..

  6. SDL3 Gamepad support - Full plug and play Gamepad support!

  7. Case insensitive data readers - Finally! No more 'lowercasing the game data'. It will simply find it, whatever the case, whatever the filesystem.

  8. 64bit safe calculations - I fixed this as much as I could (I actually fixed it too much that I broke the RIF parser)... so some things are meant to be 'unsafe'. But it should be A LOT more stable.

I have the windows binary here, but if you want Linux or macOS - check out the workspace jobs, artifacts are uploaded there.

I hope you enjoy this release as much as I did getting all this working :)

New Contributors

Full Changelog: 1.2.0...1.2.1

Note: The new 'select profile' bug still remains where the user cannot enter a name. I am still finding out where this is called but is due to SDL3 moving to floats and so it is somewhere in the menu code. Will do another release once located.

Note: Linux binaries were compiled on a RHEL9.5 machine. To use the binary, please ensure you have SDL3 3.2.10 installed and OpenAL/OpenAL-Soft installed on your system.

@atsb atsb released this 07 Dec 13:55

Changes in this release:

  • Additional resolutions for macOS and other systems (modern resolutions up to 5K)
  • Small fixes for in-game menus
  • Improvement to some math routines to make them more standard C++ rather than C defines for non-const usage
  • Defaulting to modern FPS key configurations (WSAD)

Currently, the game is now practically exactly as it was in 2000. Please build from sources.

Note: 13.04.2023 - Windows users can download the binary attached here. Just drop it into your GOG or Steam AvP Classic directory (as well as the two .dll files) and let it overwrite the original binary. This is a drag and drop replacement, then double click and have fun :)

NakedAVP 0.8.0 Released!

Choose a tag to compare

@atsb atsb released this 05 Dec 12:42

This is the first release of NakedAVP:

note: MacOS users, please use the build here: https://macsourceports.com/game/avp

Changes:

  • SDL2 Mouse Grab fixed
  • Stack Smashing fixed
  • Random crash in OGL fixed
  • Menu Key Binding fixed
  • SDL2 and OpenGL default, SDL1.2 is gone
  • macOS has Application Support directory for game data

Note: This release is primarily for GNU/Linux systems. I have NOT tested the code on a Windows system, but this is the next thing to do. There is also an issue in setting key bindings in-game, so I suggest to set your key bindings and save them on the Main Menu screen, before playing. <-- this is no longer an issue in the latest master branch. Everything should work fine.

How to Play:

You WILL need AVP GOLD (Buy it from GOG). Then you will need to lowercase ALL directories and filenames. After that, just perform a './avp' and you will be placed into a fullscreen with mousegrab and from there, you can setup your resolution.

Binary is for an Ubuntu LTS system. If you're on an older / stable distro, please compile it from source yourself. The only dependency is SDL2 and openalsoft. You will likely already have OpenGL from mesa anyway.

macOS users, I am very happy to present a universal (Intel/ARM64) macOS application bundle for you. To play with this bundle, you will need to extract all the game files into /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/AliensVsPredator and lowercase all directories and all the files within the directories (either manually or via a shell command). Please note! The app bundle is NOT codesigned, so you will need to allow gatekeeper to run it. You will likely get a popup about it when trying to play for the first time.

The command(s) I use are:

  • find avp_huds -depth | xargs -n 1 rename -v 's/(.)/([^/])/$1/\L$2/' {} ;
  • find avp_rifs -depth | xargs -n 1 rename -v 's/(.)/([^/])/$1/\L$2/' {} ;
  • find fastfile -depth | xargs -n 1 rename -v 's/(.)/([^/])/$1/\L$2/' {} ;
  • find FMVs -depth | xargs -n 1 rename -v 's/(.)/([^/])/$1/\L$2/' {} ;
  • find _lang -depth | xargs -n 1 rename -v 's/(.)/([^/])/$1/\L$2/' {} ;

Then just perform a mkdir build, cd build, cmake .. and finally make.
