Changes:

  • Specification of input files has been completely rebuilt
    • File naming conventions previously required by QAX are no longer necessary
    • QAX will identify gridded file types by the band name included in the metadata of input tiff files, or the inclusion of the band names within the filename (can be anywhere within filename).
      • Supported band names include depth, density, and uncertainty
    • If multiple sets of input files are to be run through QAX, users must group these into the same dataset.
  • In-application help links have now been added to some user interface sections. When these 'ⓘ' buttons are clicked, the user manual will be opened to relevant sections.
    • Future QAX updates will expand the use of this feature.
  • Amount of log information presented is now user configurable. This can be changed in the File->Settings dialog.
  • Inclusion of new "Test" profile.
    • This profile will be used as a mechanism to release newly developed QA checks
    • This release includes a point cloud based density check
  • PDF version of QAX user manual is now available for download from this release (and all subsequent releases)

Bug fixes:

  • Feeding datasets that include only nodata, or where the coverage area does not intersect gridded data, would cause MBES grid checks to fail.
    • This error is now caught appropriately and flagged to user

Known issues:

  • Spatial data output data displayed in QAX where the grid and coverage area used the same coordinate reference system is incorrect, this does not effect results or detailed spatial output files.

Changes:

  • TVU check now uses the absolute value for uncertainty
    • Some bathymetry processing software may produce negative uncertainty values and this was causing unexpected results in the TVU check
  • More log messages now captured and displayed within in-application log window (instead of the background console)

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed issue where processing tile size was not set correctly causing checks to fail during execution (typically around 5% complete)
    • Workaround is to open settings dialog from file menu, modify the tile size (x & y fields), then close the settings dialog

Known issues:

  • Spatial data output data displayed in QAX where the grid and coverage area used the same coordinate reference system is incorrect, this does not effect results or detailed spatial output files.

      • Reducing the tile size will allow checks (on large datasets) to be run on machines with limited memory

  • Issue whereby a 1 pixel wide hole around the outside of datasets using a coverage area has been resolved.
  • Datasets where the grid and coverage area used the same coordinate reference system would generate incorrect results. This has now been fixed.

Changes:

  • Changes to Density Check input parameters
    • There are now only two parameters; a density threshold value, and a percentage of nodes that must have a higher than or equal to value of the threshold
  • Standard were updated to include correct values for the Density Check
    • In the case of standards where a density check doesn't apply, the density threshold was specified as zero meaning all files would pass.

Bug fixes:

  • All grid checks (density, TVU, resolution, flier finder, hole finder) were impacted by a bug when the nodata value used by the grid files was NaN. In this case the NaN values were not treated as nodata.
  • Band data types were not being identified correctly for single band input files that relied on the QAX file naming convention (inclusion of depth, density, uncertainty in filename). QAX was still relying on the band name being embedded in the metadata of the geotiff itself.

Known issues:

  • The hole finder check incorrectly identifies a hole around the outside of any dataset that includes a coverage area.

Summary of all QAX 2.0 changes (v1.0.8 - v1.0.22):

  • User interface now provides ability to select a specification. Selecting a specification automatically populates the check input parameter values.
  • Band names included in GeoTIFF files are used when identifying data types within multiband geotiffs.
    • Supported names are as follows; depth, density, uncertainty
  • Gridded data checks no longer require multiband geotiffs, three separate single band geotiff files can be provided.
  • Gridded data checks no longer require all three (depth, density, uncertainty) bands
    • Each check determines if the necessary input bands have been provided and if not the check run will be marked with an execution status of aborted
  • Added support for coverage area of interest to grid checks
    • Grid checks will only be run over data that is within the coverage area
  • QAJSON data can be saved in a Microsoft Excel (xlsx) formatted file
    • This is done via the 'File->Export to Excel...' option in the main menu
  • Dependency upgrade, no user-facing changes
    • GDAL v2.4.4 -> 3.6.0
  • Reduction in log messages written to standard output

v1.0.22: Bug fixes and minor usability changes

Windows installation packages for QAX can be downloaded from the assets listed below these release notes. Two packages are provided.

  • A Windows installation file (qax_dist_vX.X.X.exe), which is recommended. This install process will add start menu items to Windows.
  • A zip file (qax_dist_vX.X.X.zip) including QAX that may be unzipped and run from this location. Useful for users that may not have administrator rights to install new software.

Changes:

  • Added IHO 2 standard to AusSeabed profile
  • Extents of grid data now shown in small map view on the score board view
  • Progress tracking for gridded data checks is improved
  • Grid checks that fail during execution no longer stop other checks from running.
    • Errors are caught and displayed in log window with execution status recorded in QAJSON (shown in score board view)

Bug fixes:

  • Rework loading of grid data
    • Grid data was loaded once per check, it is not loaded once for all checks.
    • Minor performance improvement
  • Coverage area clipping no longer introduces holes between coverage area and grid data
  • Detailed spatial output result files were offset from the expected location when coverage area was applied.
    • For example; identified holes included in the shapefile output would not line up with the actual location when a coverage area was applied.
    • This was caused by applying the wrong geotransform to the spatial output files
  • Folder name generated to store detailed spatial output files was confusing
    • This folder was based on the first input file specified. If this file was a single band density file (requiring a _density suffix), then the folder used to store all check files would be created with this name.

Known issues:

  • Excessive logging
    • Enabling "detailed spatial outputs..." results in a moderate level of excessive logging, this does not impact performance
    • On rare occasions an extreme amount of logging has been observed, this does impact performance. This may be resolved by closing and restarting the QAX application.
  • Temporary files generated to support processing of pink chart data are currently not cleaned up by QAX and must be manually deleted to reclaim disk space.
    • This was intentionally left in this pre-release to support debugging (will be resolved in non pre-release build)
  • Support for BAG files has been temporarily removed
    • Further end user input is required to understand how to best support this file format
  • QAJSON summary data included within the Excel export has not been validated. This output should not be used in production.

Changes:

  • Terminology change; "Specification" changed to "Standard"
  • Updated Standards within HIPP profile to match the HIPP SOR
    • Now includes a complete set of 8 standards

Bug fixes:

  • Parameter values for standard selected in last QAX session were not being set when application launched.
    • Previously user would have had to select another standard, and then switch back, for the correct parameter values to be displayed.

Known issues:

  • Coverage area clipping can introduce 'clipping' artifacts in the gridded data at the edge of the coverage area boundary. This shows up as a thin sliver of holes along some edges clipped by the coverage area.
  • Temporary files generated to support processing of pink chart data are currently not cleaned up by QAX and must be manually deleted to reclaim disk space.
    • This was intentionally left in this pre-release to support debugging (will be resolved in non pre-release build)
  • Support for BAG files has been temporarily removed
    • Further end user input is required to understand how to best support this file format
