Hey there, thanks for the report. Looks like OS X uses /var/run/syslog for syslog. if a syslog path is not found, this will fallback to stderr. Does this work for your usecase? Check out the branch below.

Yep, looks like it does the trick. Unfortunately I was expecting a blocking retry mechanism, but looks like that isn't the problem this is trying to solve.

Thanks for the fix though!

If you happen to know of a good python tool for doing (or async w/ callback) REST connections with backoff & retry I'd love to hear about it.

The specific problem this decorator targets is the ability to throttle how often a failing call is made. In this decorator's case, a function call that raises an exception is considered a failure. On exception, a counter will kick off, and will throttle back 1 second, upon next failure 2 seconds, 4, 8, 16, etc. On success, the counter is reset.

What you describe is certainly possible using this, for example:

@backoff.Backoff()
def make_request([...])
    """REST request here"""

def blocking_request([...]):
    """handle retry logic here"""
    while True: # or however you want to handle a timeout
        try:
            return make_request([...])
        except backoff.InBackoff():
            time.sleep(1.0)
        except ServiceUnavailable: # catch the real upstream exception here
            pass
