v0.1.1

velo 0.1.1 fixes the upload result on servers that redirect. Thanks to @dougburks for the report and the analysis in #1.

Fixed

  • Upload showed about 0.1 Mbps on most servers. On these servers, the url in the speedtest.net server list answers with a 307 redirect to the server host. Go does not follow a redirect for an upload body, so each upload request stopped after a few kilobytes. velo now sends all test requests to the host.
  • Ping was too high on the same servers. Each latency probe followed the redirect. The probes now go to the host directly.
  • A rejected upload showed as a low rate. When the server rejects every upload request, the upload phase now fails with the HTTP status, for example upload failed · 307 Temporary Redirect.

A real run against server 56503 on a 500 Mbps link:

Version Ping Download Upload
0.1.0 11.05 ms 494.38 Mbps 0.15 Mbps
0.1.1 5.33 ms 500.72 Mbps 499.39 Mbps

velo 0.1.0 is the first release of velo, a speed test for the terminal.

Install

On Omarchy and other Linux, run:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bjarneo/velo/main/install.sh | sh

The script downloads the archive for your CPU, verifies the SHA-256 checksum, and installs velo to ~/.local/bin.

To add velo to the Omarchy app launcher, run:

omarchy-tui-install velo velo tile https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bjarneo/velo/main/assets/icon.png

What velo does

  • velo measures latency, jitter, download, upload, and bufferbloat against the nearest speedtest.net server.
  • velo shows each phase live on a gauge, a timeline, and 7 panels.
  • velo uses the colors of the active Omarchy theme. It also has 8 built-in themes.
  • velo saves each run to ~/.local/share/velo/history.jsonl.
  • --private masks your IP address for screenshots and recordings.
