Describe the problem you are having

My docker overlay2 is filling up rapidly when frigate is running. I have done the following trying to narrow this down:

triple check /media/frigate mount point
explicitly set root as the owner of said mount point
set permission of said mount point to 777 (for testing)
triple check tmp cache config and expand it to 3GB (I have the RAM)
triple check shm config
Available space is correct on the storage stats page

I know it is frigate causing overlay to inflate because I can kill frigate, run a manual fstrim -va to release used blocks to proxmox, and the storage goes back to normal. I think I first noticed this issue about a month ago.

Your compose file has a volume mapping typo that explains this. Look at this line:

- /opt/docker/frigate/data/config/config

That is a single-string entry with no colon, so it is not a bind mount at all — it becomes an anonymous/implicit path rather than mapping your host config directory to /config in the container. Frigate uses /config to store the config file and sqlite database, plus model cache files alongside it, so all of that is being written into the container's writable layer, which is exactly what inflates overlay2. It should be:

- /opt/docker/frigate/data/config:/config

(1)

That matches the documented pattern:

services:
 frigate:
 ...
 volumes:
 - /path/to/your/config:/config
 - /path/to/your/storage:/media/frigate
 - type: tmpfs ///# 1GB In-memory filesystem for recording segment storage
 target: /tmp/cache
 tmpfs:
 size: 1000000000
 ...

(1)

A few things in your config make /config grow continuously, which is why this shows up as "rapid" growth rather than a fixed one-time size:

semantic_search with model_size: large, face_recognition with model_size: large, lpr with model_size: large, and your model_cache path all live under /config — downloaded detection models and face/license plate training images are stored under /config. (2)
face_recognition.save_attempts: 300 and lpr.debug_save_plates: true keep writing images. Note that LPR's debug_save_plates saves plate crops for troubleshooting and consumes real disk space. (2)
The sqlite database also lives in /config, and you have semantic search enabled, which grows it. (1)

Also note your tmpfs block is misindented — size needs to be nested under tmpfs, as in the documented example above. (1)

Two unrelated issues visible in your logs worth fixing while you're in there: the embeddings process died with Fatal Python error: Illegal instruction during semantic search model loading, and backyard, garageleft, and kitchendoor show "connection_quality":"unusable" with 307 reconnects in the last hour and 0.00 MiB stored, so those three cameras are recording nothing at all.

Fix the /config mapping, recreate the container, and run your fstrim once more — the overlay growth should stop.

Sorry, those were mistakes made while redacting/formatting my file before I copied it. I double checked my actual compose file and those errors do not exist there. I have edited the original post to correct these.
