agentmetry scan checks the instruction files an agent loads by itself. On
2026-10-25 BleepingComputer reported an AGENTS.md left in a customer's
~/Downloads, where a web page can save a file without asking, telling a coding
agent to install a rogue npm package; a CLAUDE.md in the same research pointed
Claude Code's API at the attacker. Tried against both that day, 0.10.1 caught
the versions that also said "do not mention this" or "ignore previous
instructions", and missed the plain ones. The block-mode policy also missed
Codex entirely, because Codex edits files with apply_patch. The ruleset
fingerprint is unchanged.

Added

  • Instruction-file checks in agentmetry scan. AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md,
GEMINI.md, .cursorrules and .windsurfrules, the files an agent reads from
its working directory unasked, now get three more questions:
install_directive (installs a named package, runs one straight from a
registry with npx -y or uvx, or pipes a download into a shell; a bare
npm install or pip install -e . is the project itself and stays silent),
agent_config (names the agent's own endpoint, proxy or execution config,
such as ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL or .claude/settings.json), and
outside_project (the file sits in Downloads or on the Desktop with no
repository around it). The first two are medium alone and high beside text
that steers the model or in such a folder; the third is high. An installed
name also gets the typosquat check. Skills are not held to this: they are
opted into and carry commands by design.
  • agentmetry scan with no argument also reads those folders. Besides the
MCP servers configured on the machine, it reads autoloaded instruction files
in the home folder and up to two levels into Downloads and the Desktop,
    including their OneDrive copies.

Fixed

  • The agent-config block rule covers Codex, Gemini and Cursor. In block
mode, block_agent_exec_config_write now denies writes to
    .codex/config.toml, .codex/hooks.json, .gemini/settings.json,
    .cursor/mcp.json and .cursor/hooks.json, and it reads Codex's
apply_patch, whose target path is inside the patch text. Before, a Codex
session could rewrite any agent's execution config, Claude Code's included,
    with the rule on.

Changed

  • The OWASP Agentic Skills Top 10 table counts agentmetry scan. It
predated 0.10.0 and still said nothing here scans before an agent runs.
AST08 Poor Scanning moves from none to partial, with the bypasses it does not
catch listed beside it, and AST01 and AST02 say what scan adds. Two
covered, four partial, four not covered.
