Warning

AVVERTENZA: HDMI e CRT collegati insieme.

Warning

WARNING: HDMI and CRT connected together. If you use the HDMI output to an LCD TV and the VGA→SCART output to a CRT at the same time, plug the MiSTer, the LCD TV and the CRT into the same power strip. With the two TVs on different wall sockets, switching the CRT on while the MiSTer is running can send an electrical surge through the MiSTer via the cable grounds. It happened in a test: HDMI turned green for a few seconds, then the picture vanished on both outputs (the sound kept playing) and the pad stopped responding; a reboot was needed. If you cannot use the same power strip, switch the CRT on before the MiSTer.

MiSTer Media Center

Developed with the help of AI (Anthropic's Claude).

Aggiorna sempre tutti i file insieme.

English: MiSTer MediaCenter 3.5 turns the MiSTer into a player for DVD-Video, Video CD, Super Video CD, DivX/Xvid/MP4/MKV video and music, from disc, SD, USB and network, over HDMI and on a 15 kHz CRT.

What's new in 3.5: 3.0's H.264 accelerator is complete. The 1080p picture is cleaner, 1080p video at 30 pictures per second plays smoothly and the menu over the video no longer slows it down.

  • Deblocking filter in the FPGA: the menu core also runs the filter that hides the edges of H.264's blocks, at no cost to the ARM. The purple, green and yellow dots in fast scenes with snow are gone.
  • Smooth 1080p at 30 pictures per second: HTC.mp4 (1080p 29.97) goes from 12.4% of pictures not shown in 3.0 to 0.1%.
  • Menu over 1080p without stutter: the player's bar, menu and text are blended by the menu core while it copies the picture; the ARM spends 0.3 ms per picture instead of about 5.
  • Right after power-on the video waits for the MiSTer's start-up to end (60 seconds at most, with the seconds on screen; B goes back), instead of stuttering for the first minute. MC_NOBOOTWAIT=1 removes the wait.
  • The video comes before the other programs while it plays, and MiSTer Remote is paused until the video ends (MC_NOPRIO=1 and MC_NOPAUSE=1 remove them).
  • Diagnostics in the log: the video's bitrate, the decoder's peaks, the time to draw the pictures, the other programs using the CPU.
  • New picture Ver. 3.5, with the build number at the bottom.

How far 1080p goes: smooth up to about 6 Mbit/s at 30 pictures per second and 9 Mbit/s at 24 (estimates from the tests). Beyond that the ARM cannot parse the H.264 stream in time: parsing it in the FPGA is a goal for 4.0.

Tested on a real MiSTer on 25–28 October 2026 on a Sony Trinitron CRT (SCART RGB, 480i) and HDMI together: HTC.mp4 1080p 29.97 with the menu opened several times 0.0–0.1% of pictures not shown and the menu clean on HDMI and CRT; HTC.mp4 right after power-on 0.3% after 18 s of waiting (before 6.8%); One Piece 1080p 23.976 0.3%. Details in the README and the technical sheet.

What's new in 3.0 (the H.264 accelerator in the FPGA) and in earlier versions is in the README.

Thanks: Umberto Parisi (rmonic79) of the Beceri Videoludici, whose work on MiSTer CRT Adjust made CRT Adjust possible (YouTube channel); Max Riptide for the many tests and suggestions; mad4gith for the ideas to improve MMC.

Install: extract MiSTer_MediaCenter.zip to the root of the SD card: it holds everything MMC needs. Always update all files together (from 3.0: extract the zip over the old files and restart; the 3.5 mediacenter player and menu_mediacenter.rbf core are needed together, the deblocking filter and the menu over the video are in the core; MiSTer.ini and mediacenter.ini stay as they are): Main MiSTer_MediaCenter to /media/fat/, ARM player mediacenter and menu core menu_mediacenter.rbf to /media/fat/linux/, script mediacenter.sh to /media/fat/Scripts/, libdvdcss.so.2 to /media/fat/dvdcss/, MMC_MiSTer_ini.txt to /media/fat/. Copy the lines of MMC_MiSTer_ini.txt into /media/fat/MiSTer.ini. The MiSTer Physical Disc Main, for game discs, is downloaded from its own project. Restart the MiSTer. Full guide in the README.

MiSTer Media Center

Developed with the help of AI (Anthropic's Claude).

What's new in 3.0: 1080p H.264 video plays smoothly, over HDMI and on the CRT, thanks to an accelerator in the FPGA.

  • H.264 accelerator in the FPGA: the menu core holds an engine that rebuilds the pictures of H.264 video. The ARM reads the file and parses the video, then sends the FPGA the commands for each picture; the FPGA rebuilds the picture and copies it into the frame buffer by itself. Before, the ARM needed about 44 ms per picture, more than the 41.7 ms available at 24 pictures per second; now 5–15 ms on average are enough.
  • Smooth 1080p: in stretches without seeks 240 of 240 pictures shown every 10 seconds, against about 14% not shown in 2.8. Smooth pans on HDMI and CRT.
  • Also in the 4:3 format chosen with Start: the FPGA narrows the picture to 1280 pixels (Auto and the other formats) or 960 (4:3); changing the format during the film does not turn the accelerator off.
  • When it is used: only for 8-bit, 4:2:0, progressive H.264 video 1920 pixels wide. DVD, Video CD, DivX, 720p and other video play as in 2.8. If the accelerator meets a problem it goes back to the normal decoder by itself from the same point of the film. MC_NOACC=1 in mediacenter.ini turns it off.
  • Diagnostics in the log: every 10 seconds a diag acceleratore line with pictures sent and drawn, ARM and FPGA times, pictures late or lost.
  • USB stick listed once even when the system mounts it on both /media/usb0 and /media/usb1.
  • Video CD right on the CRT: full-screen 4:3 picture without black bars at the sides, 576i for PAL discs and the format box with Start (Video CDs are now played by the same player as Super Video CDs).
  • New picture Ver. 3.0 1080 P, shown only when the mediacenter script is started by hand (not when a DVD, Super Video CD or Video CD starts it), as in 2.8.

The engine does not have H.264's deblocking filter yet: that is the next step.

Tested on a real MiSTer on 24 October 2026 on a Sony Trinitron CRT (SCART RGB, 480i) and HDMI together, with One Piece Episode 940 1080p H.264: 238 s of continuous playback with 5724 pictures drawn by the FPGA and none lost; 449 s with seeks forward and back, 240 of 240 every 10 seconds in stretches without seeks; format changes Auto, 16:9, 4:3 smooth with the accelerator always on; heavy scenes with the FPGA working about 30 ms of 41.7; DVD and DivX as in 2.8; PAL Video CD full screen on the CRT. Details in the README.

What's new in 2.8 (the right shape for every film on the CRT, format box with Start) and in earlier versions is in the README.

MiSTer Media Center

Developed with the help of AI (Anthropic's Claude).

English: MiSTer MediaCenter 2.8 turns the MiSTer into a player for DVD-Video, Video CD, Super Video CD, DivX/Xvid/MP4/MKV video and music, from disc, SD, USB and network, over HDMI and on a 15 kHz CRT.

What's new in 2.8: every film gets its right shape on the CRT, and you can change it while watching.

  • The right shape for every film on the CRT: black bars at the picture's real aspect (4:3, 16:9, 1.85:1, 2.35:1 and others), no longer only 16:9; bars at the sides for pictures narrower than 4:3.
  • Formato and Pan & scan in CRT Adjust: Auto, Pieno (stretched), 4:3, 16:9, Anamorfico 2.35:1, Cinema 1.85:1 (HDMI too) and Pan & scan for the CRT, saved in mediacenter.ini.
  • Format box with Start during the film: ◄ ► change the format and the picture changes at once on CRT and HDMI; A, Start or B close it, it closes by itself after 6 seconds; the choice stays saved.
  • Lists at 720x576 (PAL) and 720x480 (NTSC), the right resolution for the CRT, with the text centred: the CRT adjustments do not change.
  • Fixed: a cyan or yellow band at the top of the CRT when the Main answered late, for example after a 15 kHz mode change. The player now tries again at the next video and always paints black outside the film.
  • 1080p: the Main rests during playback and the menu core copies the picture into the frame buffer (zero-copy, MC_NOZC=1 turns it off). 1080p is still not recommended (about 14% of pictures not shown): work is under way on an H.264 accelerator in the FPGA.

Tested on a real MiSTer on 23 and 24 October 2026 on a Sony Trinitron CRT and HDMI together: geometry test DVD with round circles in 4:3 and 16:9, correct black bars even after mode changes, format box and lists at 720x480.

What's new in 2.7 (720-pixel CRT output like a DVD player, Auto mode from the frame rate, DVDs in YUV, 720p at full resolution) and in earlier versions is in the README.

MiSTer Media Center

Developed with the help of AI (Anthropic's Claude).

English: MiSTer MediaCenter 2.7 turns the MiSTer into a player for DVD-Video, Video CD, Super Video CD, DivX/Xvid/MP4/MKV video and music, from disc, SD, USB and network, over HDMI and on a 15 kHz CRT.

What's new in 2.7: the CRT output becomes that of a real DVD player.

  • 720-pixel CRT output at 13.5 MHz (the DVD standard): DVDs reach the CRT pixel for pixel, other widths through a horizontal filter. Lists stay 640 pixels wide, centred.
  • Player controls inside the red border of CRT Adjust, the video stays a full 720 pixels.
  • Auto 15 kHz mode from the video's frame rate: 25/50 fps at 576i 50 Hz, 23.976/29.97/59.94 fps at 480i 60 Hz, always interlaced.
  • DVDs in YUV: the FPGA converts DVD colours, subtitles and menus drawn in YUV (MC_NOYUV=1 goes back to RGB).
  • 720p videos at full resolution (1280x720, before 1280x360): sharper text, still smooth (0.1% of pictures not shown).
  • Fixed: a DVD after a 720p video started at half resolution (720x288).
  • MMC picture for 3 seconds when the script starts (MC_SPLASH=0 turns it off).
  • With a CRT we recommend MC_FIELDS=1 in /media/fat/linux/mediacenter.ini: DVD fields whole on the CRT, blended by the scaler on HDMI. Example in the README.

Tested on a real MiSTer on 19 and 20 October 2026 on a Sony Trinitron CRT and HDMI together: Star Wars Episode III and Shrek 2 PAL; DVDs in YUV with no dropped pictures; 720p MP4 at 1280x720 with only one picture not shown out of 9528 and perfect text on the CRT.

What's new in earlier versions (2.6: smooth wide videos, return from PSX games, DVD adverts) is in the README. Everything new in 2.5 (CRT Adjust, true interlaced DVDs on the CRT, flicker filter, smooth DVD menus) is described in the README.

Always update all files together: Main MiSTer_MediaCenter to /media/fat/, ARM player mediacenter and menu core menu_mediacenter.rbf to /media/fat/linux/, script mediacenter.sh to /media/fat/Scripts/, libdvdcss.so.2 to /media/fat/dvdcss/, MMC_MiSTer_ini.txt to /media/fat/. Copy the lines of MMC_MiSTer_ini.txt into /media/fat/MiSTer.ini. The MiSTer Physical Disc Main, for game discs, is downloaded from its own project. Restart the MiSTer. Full guide in the README.

MiSTer Media Center

What's new in 2.6:

  • Videos wider than the screen much smoother: a 1440x810 H.264 MKV lost 63.8% of its pictures, now 1.4%. The player narrows the picture while copying it and the FPGA converts the colours, as for 720p videos.
  • Back from a PSX game with the Physical Disc Main: sometimes, when you leave the game, the menu stays with the Physical Disc Main and the CRT shows the "modify MiSTer.ini" notice. Now the mediacenter script notices, puts back the MMC Main and its menu core. Then just start mediacenter from Scripts again: on the second start everything works, HDMI and CRT. Full explanation in the README.
  • DVD adverts and trailers without picture (for example Shrek 2 after choosing the language): sound and subtitles played but the picture stayed on the menu. Now they show in time with the sound. Menu animations also restart properly from the second loop.
  • Picture diagnosis in the log for 30 seconds after every jump or change of part of the disc.
  • The package also holds MMC_MiSTer_ini.txt with the lines to copy into MiSTer.ini.

Tested on a real MiSTer on 18 October 2026: 1440x810 MKV smooth; Shrek 2 PAL on a CRT with the adverts visible; Star Wars Episode III with menus, chapters and audio changes without faults; a PSX game and then the mediacenter script with the CRT back to normal.

MiSTer Media Center

Developed with the help of AI (Anthropic's Claude).

Dettagli in Regola CRT.
Servono a capire i problemi dalle vostre prove. MC_DIAG=0 in mediacenter.ini le spegne.

Correzioni:

File Cartella
MiSTer_MediaCenter (Main) /media/fat/

menu_mediacenter.rbf (core del menu) /media/fat/linux/
mediacenter.sh (script) /media/fat/Scripts/
libdvdcss.so.2 /media/fat/dvdcss/

In MiSTer.ini, senza forzature dello scaler nella sezione [menu]:

[MiSTer]
vga_scaler=0          ; per il CRT a 15 kHz
forced_scandoubler=0
composite_sync=1 ; solo con cavo SCART

[menu]
main=MiSTer_MediaCenter

[A0CD-*]
main=MiSTer_Physical-CD

What's new in 2.5:

Version 2.5 is mostly about CRT TVs and DVDs.

  • CRT Adjust: a new screen, the last entry of the mediacenter script, fits the picture to your CRT without opening the TV. It sets Width, Horizontal position, Height, Vertical position, 15 kHz mode and Flicker filter, and shows the resolution measured on the output. Details in CRT Adjust. This feature was made possible by the work of Umberto Parisi of Beceri Videoludici (see Thanks).
  • True interlaced DVDs on the CRT: the menu core changes picture only at the start of a field. PAL DVDs at 576i 50 Hz and NTSC ones at 480i 60 Hz play smoothly, with no jumping lines and no torn pictures.
  • Lists drawn for the CRT: the file list and CRT Adjust are drawn 640 pixels wide with the lines of the CRT mode, with bold titles and entries. Text stays whole and readable at 15 kHz too.
  • Flicker filter in the FPGA core: thin white text no longer flickers on the interlaced output.
  • Controls and subtitles readable on the CRT: larger characters, controls on two rows with a line for audio and subtitles, and subtitles move above the controls while these are shown.
  • Diagnosis lines in the log (mediacenter: diag ...): for every stutter they say how many pictures were dropped and why (disc read, decoding, drawing, sound). They help understand problems from your tests. MC_DIAG=0 in mediacenter.ini turns them off.

Fixes:

  • CRT after a game: back in the menu after a core, the MiSTer loaded the stock menu and the CRT showed only noise or the "modify MiSTer.ini" warning until power off. The MMC Main now always reloads its own menu core.
  • DVDs on the CRT with jumping lines and torn pictures every 10-15 seconds: fixed in the core, which takes the new page address only once it is stable, and in the player.
  • Audio track change from 5.1 to the 2-channel commentary: the picture stopped for about 5 seconds. The video now never waits and the new sound starts at the film's position.
  • DVD started from the mediacenter script slower (18% of pictures dropped): the player now uses both ARM cores however it is started.
  • Small stutters during the film (100-200 ms): the player asked libdvdnav for the DVD state while it was reading the disc, and had to wait. The state is now copied by the disc reader.
  • DVD menus: chapter selection no longer stutters, because highlighted buttons are prepared once instead of for every picture. Menu text appears at once and complete, instead of on the second loop of the music: the player pushes the menu's last picture out of the decoder as soon as the disc signals the end of the video sequence, like set-top players.
  • Joypad keys written over the DVD menu: the Linux console now stays hidden while the player is open.
  • Disc starting again by itself after stop and exit: the Main ignores the disc in the drive until it is removed.

Tested on a real MiSTer on 17 and 18 October 2026, on Sony Trinitron CRTs over SCART RGB (also on a second CRT): protected PAL DVD with menus, chapter selection and three audio tracks with the commentary; 3709 film pictures with only 3 dropped; DivX and MP4.

MiSTer Media Center

Developed with the help of AI (Anthropic's Claude).

Correzioni:

  • CRT senza immagine: con la 2.0 sull'uscita VGA a 15 kHz si vedeva solo il fruscio del menu, perché il Main non diceva al core che c'era un'immagine da mostrare. Ora DVD e video arrivano al CRT (provato su un Trinitron con cavo SCART RGB, 576i interlacciato);
  • DivX tagliati a destra su HDMI: un video 576x432 veniva raddoppiato a 1152 punti, più largo del riquadro 4:3 (960 punti a 720p) che lo scaler non sa rimpicciolire. Ora il lettore prepara l'immagine della misura giusta;

  • l'FPGA converte i colori del video: gli MP4 H.264 a 720p ora sono fluidi (immagini non mostrate dal 10% a circa il 2%);
  • audio e video sincronizzati, cambio della traccia audio durante il film senza scatti;
  • Super Video CD con i menu, anche da immagini .bin + .cue sulla SD;
  • i giochi su disco li gestisce il Main di Physical Disc, da installare a parte;

File Cartella
MiSTer_MediaCenter (Main) /media/fat/
mediacenter (lettore ARM) /media/fat/linux/
menu_mediacenter.rbf (core del menu) /media/fat/linux/
mediacenter.sh (script) /media/fat/Scripts/
libdvdcss.so.2 /media/fat/dvdcss/

Il vecchio vcd_player non serve più. Poi in MiSTer.ini, senza forzature dello scaler nella sezione [menu]:

[MiSTer]
vga_scaler=0          ; per il CRT a 15 kHz
forced_scandoubler=0
composite_sync=1 ; solo con cavo SCART

[menu]
main=MiSTer_MediaCenter

[A0CD-*]
main=MiSTer_Physical-CD

Da provare: Super Video CD da disco masterizzato.

English: MiSTer MediaCenter 2.1 turns the MiSTer into a player for DVD-Video, Video CD, Super Video CD, DivX/Xvid/MP4/MKV video and music, from disc, SD, USB and network.

What's new in 2.1:

  • Main updated to the official MiSTer Main of 16 October 2026 (HDMI fixes and what's new for the other cores).

Fixes:

  • CRT with no picture: with 2.0 the 15 kHz VGA output only showed the menu's noise, because the Main never told the core there was a picture to show. DVDs and video now reach the CRT (tested on a Trinitron with a SCART RGB cable, 576i interlaced);
  • DivX cut on the right over HDMI: a 576x432 video was doubled to 1152 pixels, wider than the 4:3 window (960 pixels at 720p) that the scaler cannot shrink. The player now prepares the picture at the right size;
  • with vga_scaler=0 the "modify MiSTer.ini" warning no longer appears over the player.

How it works: the ARM reads the disc or file, decodes video and audio with FFmpeg and writes the pictures to the frame buffer. The FPGA converts colours from YUV to RGB, enlarges the picture for HDMI and generates the 15 kHz CRT signal by itself, sending the same picture to both outputs at once. Details in the README.

Tested with both the previous official Main and the latest official Main installed as /media/fat/MiSTer: no problems.

From 2.0:

  • the FPGA converts the video colours: 720p H.264 MP4 now plays smoothly (frames not shown from 10% to about 2%);
  • audio and video in sync, seamless audio track changes during a film;
  • Super Video CD with menus, also from .bin + .cue images on the SD card;
  • game discs are handled by the Physical Disc Main, installed separately;
  • settings file /media/fat/linux/mediacenter.ini (for example MC_AV_OFFSET=0.05 to move the sound).

Install: extract MiSTer_MediaCenter.zip to the root of the SD card (always update all files together): Main MiSTer_MediaCenter to /media/fat/, ARM player mediacenter and menu core menu_mediacenter.rbf to /media/fat/linux/, script mediacenter.sh to /media/fat/Scripts/, libdvdcss.so.2 to /media/fat/dvdcss/. The old vcd_player is no longer needed. In MiSTer.ini put vga_scaler=0, forced_scandoubler=0 (and composite_sync=1 with SCART) in [MiSTer], main=MiSTer_MediaCenter in [menu] with no scaler overrides, and main=MiSTer_Physical-CD in [A0CD-*]: MMC handles the menu (video discs and files), Anime0t4ku's Physical Disc Main, installed separately, handles games inside the console cores. Restart the MiSTer. Full guide and test results in the README.

Tested on a real MiSTer: protected DVDs with menus, audio tracks and subtitles; Video CDs; Super Video CD from an image; DVD-R with DivX and MKV; 720p H.264 MP4; PSX game with LibCrypt through the Physical Disc Main; DVD and DivX on a Trinitron CRT over SCART RGB and over HDMI 720p. Still to test: Super Video CD from a burned disc.

  • uscita VGA a 15 kHz per i CRT, insieme all'HDMI;
  • i giochi su disco li gestisce il Main di Physical Disc, da installare a parte;

Poi in MiSTer.ini:

[menu]
main=MiSTer_MediaCenter

[A0CD-*]
main=MiSTer_Physical-CD

English: MiSTer MediaCenter 2.0 turns the MiSTer into a player for DVD-Video, Video CD, Super Video CD, DivX/Xvid/MP4/MKV video and music, from disc, SD, USB and network.

What's new:

  • the FPGA converts the video colours: 720p H.264 MP4 now plays smoothly (frames not shown from 10% to about 2%);
  • audio and video in sync, seamless audio track changes during a film;
  • Super Video CD with menus, also from .bin + .cue images on the SD card;
  • 15 kHz VGA output for CRTs, alongside HDMI;
  • game discs are handled by the Physical Disc Main, installed separately;
  • settings file /media/fat/linux/mediacenter.ini (for example MC_AV_OFFSET=0.05 to move the sound).

Install: extract MiSTer_MediaCenter.zip to the root of the SD card. It holds the Main, the player and the menu core: always update them together. Then set main=MiSTer_MediaCenter in [menu] and main=MiSTer_Physical-CD in [A0CD-*] of MiSTer.ini, and restart the MiSTer. For protected DVDs the zip includes libdvdcss.so.2 in dvdcss/, the same one tested with protected DVDs. Full guide and test results in the README.

Tested on a real MiSTer (HDMI): protected DVDs with menus, audio tracks and subtitles; Video CDs; Super Video CD from an image; DVD-R with DivX and MKV; 720p H.264 MP4; PSX game with LibCrypt through the Physical Disc Main. Still to test: Super Video CD from a burned disc, 15 kHz output on a CRT.
