@burque505 burque505 released this 30 Oct 14:29

AhkWord is a word processor for Windows that AutoHotkey scripts can drive while you type. This is a work in progress.

Download and run

Nothing to install. Choose one of the two downloads below:

  • AhkWord-66.zip (16 MB): everything AhkWord needs except .NET. If your computer hasn't got the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime, AhkWord offers on its first start to download it from Microsoft for itself only (about 70 MB, checked against Microsoft's checksums, into AhkWord's own folder: nothing is installed in Windows, and no administrator is needed), or to open Microsoft's page to install it for all of Windows.
  • AhkWord-66-complete.zip (87 MB): the same with .NET 10 inside, for a computer that may not have it or isn't online. It asks nothing.

Then:

  1. Unzip it anywhere you can write to: your Documents, a USB stick (not Program Files).
  2. Double-click AhkWord.exe. Windows may say Windows protected your PC the first time, because AhkWord isn't signed: click More info, then Run anyway.

If Windows says "Smart App Control blocked an app that may be unsafe", there is no Run anyway: Smart App Control, on by default on some new Windows 11 PCs, blocks programs that aren't signed, and AhkWord.exe is AutoHotkey, which isn't. See Troubleshooting before you turn the setting off (on many versions of Windows 11 it can't be turned on again without resetting Windows). A signed AhkWord is next on the roadmap.

Just trying it out? Put an empty file named portable beside AhkWord.exe first. Everything AhkWord keeps (settings, recent files, templates, recovery copies) then stays in its own folder, and deleting the folder leaves no trace. Without it, settings are kept for your Windows user, shared by every copy of AhkWord.

AhkWord.exe is AutoHotkey v2.0.30, unchanged, under AhkWord's name, so you don't need AutoHotkey installed; it is under the GNU GPL v2, and its license and a link to its source come in the zip. The other parts' licenses are in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md and licenses.

The documentation is at https://burque505.github.io/AhkWord/, and what is done and what comes next is in the roadmap.

New in AhkWord 66

  • Fix for a serious display bug: in Print Layout, a Word file whose first paragraphs are hidden (Word can keep the anchors of floating shapes there) had its first lines painted over by the top margin. The text was in the file but couldn't be seen. Those lines now show. If you use AhkWord 65 or earlier, please update.

For what came in iterations 60 to 65, see AhkWord 65.

New since AhkWord 59 (iterations 60 to 65)

  • Sections. Insert > Section Break starts a new section on a new page. Each section can have its own header and footer (and its own first page), Same as previous or not, and its page numbers can start again; {pages} counts the whole document and the new {sectionpages} the section, as in Word. Page view, Print Preview, printing and PDF show each page's own section.
  • Word's sections, both ways. RTF and Word (.docx) files keep their sections, each section's header and footer and its page numbering, and AhkWord now takes a file's page margins from the file.
  • Insert from Template as a new section, with the template's own header and footer: put a package of documents together in one file.
  • Change Case > Headline Case: small words in lower case (but the first and last), legal forms (v., In re, et al., d/b/a ...) and abbreviations (LLC, Inc., N.A. ...) kept as they are. Its word lists are in headline-case.txt, beside the settings, for you to change.
  • Paste as Plain Text (Ctrl+Shift+V, also in the right-click menu and the command palette; PastePlainText for scripts).
  • Extensions: an extension point with hooks, including one for an extension's own template language; the fields of headers and footers are filled in too.
  • Fixes: in Print Layout, page 1's top margin is no longer copied onto every pasted or inserted paragraph; a Word file's header and footer are its first section's, not its last's; no error when AhkWord closes; Multiple Pages scrolls to its last row the first time.

New since AhkWord 57 (iterations 58 and 59)

  • .NET 10.0.14, Microsoft's security update of 25 October 2026, is in the complete download.
  • AhkWord keeps its own .NET up to date. If AhkWord downloaded .NET for itself (or you use the complete download), it looks at Microsoft's list of .NET releases once a week, in the background, and when there is a newer .NET it asks at the next start: Update now, Later, or Skip that version. The update is downloaded and checked against Microsoft's checksums, as the first download was, and put in place of the old one in one move (if another AhkWord window is open, it says to close it first, and nothing changes). Windows Update doesn't know a .NET in AhkWord's folder, so this is how it gets Microsoft's fixes. An empty file named no-update-check beside AhkWord.exe stops the weekly look; a .NET installed for all of Windows is left to Windows Update.
  • PDF export and printing show their progress: Exporting as PDF: page 12 of 100 in the status bar, then Windows is finishing the file, and Esc stops them; a stopped export leaves no file.
  • Export as PDF, or print to a PDF printer? The Pages guide now explains the difference: other PDF printers (CutePDF, PDF24 ...) often make smaller files, but only Export as PDF has bookmarks and links.

For the command palette and the fixes to Replace All and Change Case, see AhkWord 57; for event hooks, AhkWord 56.

New since AhkWord 56 (iteration 57)

Please update if you use footnotes, cross-references or a table of contents. These keep hidden markers in the text, and three commands could damage them:

  • Replace All changed text inside the markers: replacing a word such as "toc" could take a table of contents apart. Find, Replace and Replace All now match only the text you see, and Replace All is one Ctrl+Z.
  • Change Case changed the markers' case, so a heading's link from the table of contents broke and the outline showed the marker as text; and Ctrl+Z after it undid the step before instead. It now leaves hidden text alone, keeps each character's formatting, and is one Ctrl+Z. Markers it damaged before are put right when the document is opened.
  • Clean up pasted text (a macro) put the markers back as plain text when the selection had them. It now leaves such a selection alone and says why.

And something new:

  • A command palette: press Ctrl+Shift+P (or Tools > Command Palette, or the magnifier on the quick access toolbar), type part of a command's name, and press Enter. It finds any ribbon command, shown with the tab and group it is on and its shortcut, and your macros, the styles, your snippets and recent documents. A command the ribbon has greyed out is greyed out here too, and the ones you used last come first.

For event hooks see AhkWord 56, and for snippets and the new headers and footers AhkWord 55.

New since AhkWord 55 (iteration 56)

  • Event hooks (Tools > Event Hooks): a macro that AhkWord runs by itself when it starts, when a document is opened, made, saved, printed or closed, or when a style changes. Nothing of yours has to keep running. The macro is told what happened and which file or style it was about, and works on the document through Rte like any macro.
    • BeforeSave and Closing wait for their macro, so it can change the document before it is saved, or save it before the window closes.
    • Each hook has an On box: switch a macro off without unhooking it, and on again when you want it.
    • New... writes a starting macro for the event, with an example in it; Edit opens it in the editor Windows has for .ahk files; Run Now tries it.
    • A hook that saves doesn't set itself off again.
  • PDF on save is now an event hook: run it from Tools > Macros (or with a hotkey) to switch a PDF beside each save on or off.
  • Open AutoHotkey Dash, a new macro: AutoHotkey's Dash, whose Editor settings choose the program that edits macros (with AutoHotkey installed).
  • New to AutoHotkey? Getting started now explains what AutoHotkey adds to AhkWord, which program opens a macro and how to change it, and what portable mode carries with it. You don't need AutoHotkey, or to know it, to write documents.

For snippets and the new headers and footers, see AhkWord 55.

New since AhkWord 54 (iteration 55)

  • Snippets (Insert > Snippets): type an abbreviation such as ;sig in a document, then Space or Enter (or have it fire at once), and it becomes its text, formatted, with its fields asked for. They are AutoHotkey hotstrings that work in AhkWord's own window only. Make a snippet by typing or pasting its text in its own dialog, with bold, italic, underline and fonts, or from the text selected in the document. Export as Script turns them into plain-text hotstrings for any other program. A snippet goes in where you type it, without starting a new line after it.
  • Headers and footers as Word has them (Layout > Header & Footer):
    • several lines in a part: press Enter. A blank line at the end leaves space below a header.
    • a font, size, bold, italic and underline for the whole header or footer, and for selected words of their own, such as a firm's name in bold above its address.
    • a line below the header or above the footer.
    • Header from top and Footer from bottom: their distance from the page's edge. A header or footer taller than its margin pushes the text in, as in Word.
    • a first page of its own in every way: whether it has a header or footer at all, its text, font and line. The other pages' settings leave it alone, so a letterhead on page 1 only, or no page number on page 1, is easy. Page 1's text starts below its own header.
    • all of this is printed, shown on Show Pages' sheets, and kept in RTF, Word and OpenDocument files, both ways.
  • Insert > Horizontal Line: a line across the text, in a paragraph of its own. It prints and is kept in every format; Markdown gets --- and HTML <hr>.
  • Show Pages: the text moves below a taller header at once, not after the next edit; and the flicker and jump every minute or so while there were unsaved changes (the recovery copy) are gone.
  • A new document starts in the Normal style's font.

New since AhkWord 48 (iterations 49 to 54)

  • A table of contents (Insert > Table of Contents), as Word's: the headings with their printed pages, dot leaders, and Ctrl+click to go to a heading. Update it with F9 or its right-click menu. Word and LibreOffice get a real table of contents that they can update too, and theirs come in as tables of contents.
  • Footnotes (Insert > Footnote, Ctrl+Alt+F), laid out at the foot of the page as Word lays them out: a long note goes on to the next page, and a note is kept whole when it fits. Notes can have several paragraphs, bold, italic and underline, and a size of their own (the Footnote Text style). They are real footnotes in Word and OpenDocument files, both ways.
  • Cross-references to numbered paragraphs (Insert > Cross-reference): "see paragraph 23(e)", kept up to date as the paragraphs are renumbered. Word and LibreOffice get their own cross-references.
  • PDF bookmarks: Export as PDF puts in a bookmark for each heading, nested by level, and a table of contents' entries link to their headings, as in Word's PDFs.
  • A different first page header and footer (Layout > Header & Footer > First page).
  • Numbered paragraphs' sub-levels no longer have a blank line between them; Modify Style > Space between sub-levels chooses.
  • The right-click menu is always AhkWord's own, as in Word: spelling suggestions, Cut, Copy and Paste, Font, Paragraph, and the table and footnote commands where they apply.
  • Show Pages: no more flash on Ctrl+C or every few minutes, no blue band across the pages when selecting the top of a page, and no black streaks while numbered paragraphs are laid out again.
  • Fixes in numbered lists: a list after legal numbering starts at 1, lists keep their numbering through .rtf, .html and .md, and more.

@burque505 burque505 released this 22 Oct 15:13

Superseded by AhkWord 54, which needs nothing installed.

AhkWord is a word processor for Windows that AutoHotkey scripts can drive while you type. This is a work in progress.

Download and run

  1. Install the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime (once per computer): winget install Microsoft.DotNet.DesktopRuntime.10, or from https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet/10.0.
  2. Download AhkWord-48.zip below and unzip it anywhere (not into Program Files).
  3. Double-click AhkWord.exe. The first start takes a minute or two while it downloads its components and compiles; later starts are quick.

AhkWord.exe is AutoHotkey v2.0.30, unchanged, under AhkWord's name, so you don't need AutoHotkey installed. It is under the GNU GPL v2: its license and a link to its source come in the zip. If you have AutoHotkey v2 already, you can run AhkWord.ahk from the zip or from the repository instead.

The documentation is at https://burque505.github.io/AhkWord/.

New in AhkWord 48

  • A crash fixed. Now and then, usually after opening a long document, AhkWord could close with an error in the Windows Ribbon (UIRibbon.dll), losing unsaved work. It came from the ribbon library AhkWord uses and has been there in every release so far; it is fixed in this one.
  • Show Pages repaints correctly after opening. With Show Pages on, the window could keep part of what it showed before the pages were worked out (a line drawn over another) until you scrolled. Fixed.
  • Show Pages is on by default for new installations (View > Show Pages; an existing installation keeps its own setting).

Also in AhkWord 47

  • Saving as .rtf keeps every paragraph's style. In a document with an ordinary numbered list whose indents hadn't been fitted yet (a new document, or a new list), saving as .rtf lost every style but the headings: Title, Quote, Code and Numbered Paragraph came back as Normal. The autosave recovery copy had the same problem. Both are fixed.

Also since AhkWord 43 (iterations 44 to 46)

  • Show Pages without flicker at the page's edges: the grey bands between the sheets now scroll with the text in one move, across the margins and the line numbers too.
  • The last page's footer is shown, below the text; scroll on past the end (wheel, scroll bar, Page Down) to see it.
  • Line numbers as in Word: a quarter of an inch from the text (or the distance you set), and on their lines with Show Pages at any zoom.
  • Large zooms: a document opened at a large zoom is laid out at that zoom; the page keeps the paper's width, its footer centred; the left margin and the line numbers stay in view when the page is wider than the window.
  • Saving with Show Pages on writes the document's own spacing (HTML had the sheets' gaps as large margins).
  • OpenDocument files with line numbers no longer show a second number beside the footer in LibreOffice.
  • HTML files: AhkWord's own style data is at the end of the file, so the HTML view starts with the document.
  • Settings shared by several windows are no longer lost now and then when the settings file is briefly in use (a virus scanner, the search indexer).

New in AhkWord 47
