π§ What are Git and GitHub? Git is like a magic diary for your code. Every time you make a change, Git remembers it! So, if you ever make a mistake, you can always go back to an older, working version.
GitHub is like a big, super-friendly website where you can keep all your code diaries safe and show them to your friends or other developers. It's a place to store your projects online!
β¬οΈ How to Put Your Code on GitHub (Pushing!) It's easy-peasy to share your projects! Follow these steps:
Make a new space on GitHub: Go to the GitHub website and create a new project space (they call it a "repository"). Make sure to click the box that says 'Add .gitignore' and pick 'Python' if you're writing Python code.
Bring it to your computer: Imagine you're copying the empty project space from GitHub to your computer. This is called "cloning".
Put your code inside: Copy all your project files into the folder you just cloned.
Tell Git about your changes and send them to GitHub! Open your command line (a black window where you type commands) and type these magic words, one by one:
git clone <paste_your_repo_link_here>
# (This copies your empty project space)
cd <name_of_your_project_folder>
# (This takes you inside your project folder)
git add .
# (This tells Git to look at all your new files and changes)
git commit -m "My first code!"
# (This makes a snapshot of your code, like taking a photo, and gives it a little note)
git push origin main
# (This sends your snapshot to GitHub so everyone can see it!)
Replace <paste_your_repo_link_here> with the link GitHub gives you for your new project, and <name_of_your_project_folder> with the name of the folder.
π« What NOT to Push (Secret Stuff!) Some files are like your secret toys β you don't want to share them with everyone! Make sure you DO NOT send these files or folders to GitHub:
pycache/ (These are temporary files Python makes)
.vscode/ (These are settings for some coding programs)
.idea/ (More settings for coding programs)
.env (This can have secret passwords or special keys!)
*.zip (Compressed files)
*.exe (Program files for Windows)
*.db (Database files)
*.csv (Spreadsheet files)
π How to Use a .gitignore File (The Secret Keeper!) The best way to tell Git what to ignore is by making a special file called .gitignore. It's like a list of things Git should pretend don't exist.
Create a file named .gitignore in your project folder (make sure it starts with a dot .!) and put stuff like this inside:
# Python temporary files
pycache/
*.py[cod]
*.so
# Virtual environment folders (where you keep your Python tools)
env/
venv/
# Coding program settings
.vscode/
.idea/
# Secret stuff
.env
ποΈ Oops! How to Remove Unwanted Files You Accidentally Pushed Don't worry if you accidentally sent a secret file! You can fix it. Open your command line and type:
git rm -r --cached .vscode/
# (This tells Git to forget about the .vscode folder)
echo "pycache/" >> .gitignore
echo ".vscode/" >> .gitignore
# (This adds pycache and .vscode to your ignore list for next time)
git add .gitignore
# (This tells Git you changed the .gitignore file)
git commit -m "Removed unnecessary files"
# (This makes a new snapshot saying you removed the files)
git push
# (This sends the update to GitHub!)
